Bucking underperforming recruitment trend

629

Every year we hear that January is a difficult time to do transfer business. Clubs are reluctant to allow top performers to leave midseason, but we’ve had some creative January activity over the years. Objectives for this month are clear.

We need to better prepare for our Summer Cup Finals. Trying to build a defence, or strike force, while simultaneously qualify for the Champions League is, unsurprisingly, tricky. Summer transfer windows are really two periods, the last days of the month, after European qualification has been taken care of, and earlier in the window, when limited volumes of business will take place.

We’ve done some great business early in summer months, most notably Virgil van Dijk, but instances like this are rare.

The most interesting aspect of this window will be how Ronny Deila is backed. He’s 18 months in the job now, long enough to come to an assessment of the wider scouting infrastructure he inherited. We’ve been underperforming on recruitment since January 2012. Ronny needs to buck this trend, and Celtic need to give him the necessary lateral.

I only played on grass once, Rosebury the final of the Glasgow cup against St Johns, I’m sure the winger I was up against was a few years older or he was fed on baby bio!

I still feel guilty with the tackle I did to take him out… Directed from our manager I may add.

RONNY DEILA SCOUTING LA LIGA DEFENDER

By Ruairi Daly 45 mins ago 2 min read time 476 reads No comments yet

Celtic manager Ronny Deila was in Spain at the weekend and was reportedly scouting defender Aleksandar Pantic of Eibar.

The 23-year-old centre-back is on loan from Villarreal and is out of contract this summer and will be available on a free transfer.

Ronny Deila watched on as Pantic’s side beat Real Betis 4-0 with goals from Ander Capa, Keko, Adrian and Borja Baston.

Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images SportJuan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images Sport

Pantic can also play at right-back, which could prove useful for Celtic as they have dealt with numerous injury problems at the position over the years.

Having come through the ranks at Partizan Belgrade, he moved to FK Rad and Red Star Belgrade before moving to Villarreal.

His move to Villarreal hasn’t worked out so far, as he made just nine appearances in the 2013/14 season before his two loan spells at Cordoba last year and Eibar this season

So far this season the Serbian international has made 14 appearances for the La Liga side starting in 12 of those games.

He has also made 16 appearances for the Serbian Under-21’s national side scoring one goal.

It’s not clear if any move will be made for Pantic and it will only be a summer move as he is on loan at Eibar.

The manager RD has been allowed to join the recruitment team!?

What on earth is all that about

  6. 67 ECW 4.??

What I think was behind both signings (but aknowledge I don’t know) was the need for a strong front man to hold up play to allow the maligned one up front system to work.

Ciftci actually has a decent touch but I’ve been disappointed at the number of balls he fails to hold up although I’ve seen a wee bit improvement. His fitness level needs more work which is where coaches come in. If a half yard could be added or more strength to hold up play he could be what he was signed for.

That was before Griffiths showed up as a natural goal scorer with an added work and fitness ethic which the coaching staff are surely entitled to claim some credit for?

Cole is a punt for the same reason a holding CF but who is far from fit. That takes time. They both might still prove value, they may not. That is the price of buying in Puntland.

I didn’t see the second Malmo game and still wonder how a team we played off the park in the first 30 mind at CP managed to turn it around so completely. That first 30 minutes team is still there or the players are (if not injured).

My Malmo moment in terms of thinking RD is not providing his supporters enough justification for their support was v Motherwell. We were awful. He retrieved a bit v Hearts and nearly went back to Motherwell level v Partick, but here we are 3 points clear a game in hand with nothing like our first choice team so unless a replacement is guaranteed to improve on that I’d hold off to see how RD fares until mid April.

I’ve said churn is a factor that contributes to roller coaster performances and there is no bigger churn factor than a new manager.

  10. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Hamiltontim, my son keeps me up to date with a lot of things.

The captain of under 17 team, Lewis Bell, was in his year at school until Lewis left at the end of second year to go to St Ninian’s in Kirkie . My son has also played against Rico Quitongo a few times before Rico was picked up by Hamilton.

Conor Scullion , who is only 16, came on for Hamilton today. It would have been a big thrill for himto play against some of our experienced guys in our team today.

Craig is suspended for Sunday’s game. In my mind he was wrongly sent off in that Caley game. He did not prevent a goal scoring oppurtunity as Watkins had already shot at goal. It was a penalty as Craig hit him late but not a sending off.

Fasan wasn’t on the bench today. Our other keeper, McCabe replaced Bailly

  11. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Jude, that sounds very painful for Josh. I hope he makes a full recovery and has benefitted from his short time at EKFC.

Cheers mate, only reason I’m asking is I heard some bad news regarding Oweny Coyle who used to run the London No 1 CSC but also travelled with the Mullens bus when he was up the road. I went to Dortmund with him in 87 and he was some character. A real Celtic man who never missed a game despite being down south . God Bless you Owen

  15. I woud like a defensive midfielder like Neil Lenon or Paul Lambert & perhaps move some of our 7 attacking midfield players on, as we only play with 1.A good player like Neil would give out defence a lot more production. I would also sack the scouts who have picked out our strikers of late from Bangura the 3 stooges onwards. I think Hooper was signed because NL had played against him & rated him also he rated Griff so signed him. The scouts have had no notable successes out 6 strikers. Time to clear them out.

  16. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bourne , a belated happy new year to you.

Further to your earlier post about refs, that balloon on Saturday gave a bye kick after the Thistle player connected with Ciftci. Even from our seats in the main stand, you could see Cifcti was hit late.

The club won’t do anything about the standard of refs as anytime we have complained, we are ridiculed. The media accept the managers of other teams complaining about refs without making a fuss but when we do it , we get the usual mince of things evening themselves out.

Sportscene’s coverage last night was possibly the worst so far. If one of the penalties was awarded and we scored, our performance may have inproved.

Tony Mowbray’s time was the worst of the ‘honest mistakes’ that I can remember. Other posters who went to our games in the fifties and early sixties, have probably seen worse.

  22. If I was PL I would like to know if Ronnie, John and John are going to be up to the task of producing a consistently better team on the park. The best coach on Celtic’s books right now is Davie Hay and I would draft him into the coaching team to assess the 3 that we have to see if they are going to make it and to hopefully provide some much needed short term improvement. It’ll never happen I know but in any other walk of life would you hand money to an underperforming manager and team without giving them some “help”. The performances on the park should be much better and magnifies all the other issues surrounding our club.

Same to you,- my fine Celtic friend.

I saw your usual memory power was working as normal when you remembered Finnie sent off Scott Brown despite the player’s best efforts to abort his slipping challenge.

I also agree about the ‘ridicule’ angle because the Scottish press are well onto the ‘paranoia’ that helped kill their club.

I saw the comments about Sportscene which is nothing more than a Sevco bulletin during the journey.

Laughably SKY have the full game rights and we are told that specifics can’t be analysed because of this. Whilst Sevcoscene led by supreme soup taker Nevin keep us up to date with Crumbledome capers.

Celtic TV covered El Glasico, and the replays with analysis by Tom Boyd are archived, it’s high time Celtic told the Celtic support that they will make representation suitable to our support to call out the continuing Dallas, Dallas school of cheating.
