Building Leigh Griffiths

324

I doubt even Leigh Griffiths’ dad thought he had this kind of form in him when he signed for Celtic in January last year. The then 23-year-old had ‘squad filler’ written all over him as he waited in line behind Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes. The arrival of John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic a year ago could have limited Leigh’s chances further, but neither showed enough form to make the striker position their own.

Prospects looked bleak last season. Two starts before Christmas, Leigh spent time with the youths and looked to be heading out of the club in January, but with the manager’s mind increasingly made up on Guidetti and Scepovic, he got his chance. The transformation has been remarkable. His goals return compares to the best in the modern era, but it’s the type of goals he scores which has caught the attention most.

He’s fast, skilful, can out-jump central defenders and scores goals in big games. Should Celtic choose to play with Carlton Cole as a target man, Leigh will also be able to play to his left.

Whatever Ronny Deila achieves this season, the improvement in Leigh Griffiths will feature high up the list.  Leigh’s attitude to self-improvement is also worth noting.

It sounds like an almighty mess you had to clear up.

Scepovic did take up some good positions last season but he wasn’t given the ball for whatever reason. It may have as some of our players thought like some of our support, that Stefan was a dud. A very popular word among some Celtic supporters .

You may well be right with Hibs, but I am of the belief it was Stenhousemuir, I will need a link that it was Hibs to dispell that belief.

RWE, YOU ARE OF COURSE CORRECT IN EVERYTHING YOU HAVE SAID.

    *fully concur as well.

Watched the Everton/Sunderland game yesterday, after Steven Fletcher scores he blesses himself, not the full blown Calvary version just a wee personal one. Same thing with big Lukaku.

15 minutes later on comes the wearsider sub young Duncan Ian Watmore, he blesses himself as well on entering the field of play. Now young Watmore’s mother is a curate in 2 parishes while his dad is a church commissionaire.

So his act of symbolising his saviours sacrifice is probably purely because he’s a Christian and not solely on being a member of the Catholic faith.

Our very own Holy Goalie was also cautioned for making a universal symbol adopted in times of trial by sportsmen and women around the world.

Ok in the the tinderbox atmosphere of the former Glasgow derby the sign of the cross can be seen to be no longer a demonstration of faith but a symbol of tribal allegiance.

However not so at Firhill where a young Rod McDonald while playing for Partick Thistle was yellow carded for doing the same while entering the tunnel at half time. He was later yellow carded again in the 2nd half which instantly became a red card. Now I have no idea what branch of the Christian faith RMcD is but he was carded in the dressing room on the advice of the local constabulary as it caused offence to a visiting supporter.

Meanwhile, an out of control member of the opposite side who was also yellow carded in the 1st half for leaving the field of play was allowed to kick and maim throughout the 2nd half. I believe the referee resigned not long after this.

Only in the anti-Christ country that I still call hame can they continue to parade on the streets of the country carrying the bible to proclaim their faith, a faith that rejected the symbol of making the sign of the cross as ostentatious. While cursing Jesus’ successor on this earth as well as his mother isn’t.

I have lived for 40+ years away fae hame, I live in a country that creed, colour and culture are respected and faith is openly discussed and talked about.

IMHO, Scotland is the most anti-Catholic country in the western world.

I’m sure that there is no truth in the rumour that Chris Graham donned a yashmak when attending a fancy dress party on Saturday evening. However it would be much more accurate to suggest that the Jar Jar Binks of public relations has now been extricated from his blue room purdah. I realize that the austerity is beginning to bite, but by replacing a cool seasoned PR pro of the stature of Level 5’s Stephen Kerr, with an irascible Islamaphobe, it’s tantamount to giving a pyromaniac the helm of The Hindenburg.

When our erstwhile weekend director first dipped his toe in King’s blue lagoon, he made the cardinal error of PR. He was at the epicentre of his own media storm with his Je Suis Charlie homage. However it was less Je Suis and much more of a complete Charlie, so he stepped down from his position on the shyster board prior to the first fit of his blazer.

On his blazing return at 8pm on Friday evening, Monsieur Graham managed to include Douglas Park in his menage of money-lenders. As Mr Park is no longer involved in backing King, it was evident that Monsieur Graham was treating us to a an Aladdin narrative, where King had found an old brass lamp at Mar Hall and had conjured up a Morgan Stanley genie with £1.5m to spare. If you read between the lines a more persuasive pantomime was that of Ali Baba and his forty-one convictions of thievery, coming up short again.

However Monsieur Graham was upstaged by our old china Craig Houston. Craig popped his head out of the oven, and having refreshed himself with a few cyber pints of Auchenhowie Ale, he strapped on his keyboard to inveigh against Mike Ashley. Apparently Craig is ‘in the loop’ and is aware of some impending litigation by the Sports Direct billionaire. I referred to this in a previous article. Craig’s simplistic solution is to not only continue the boycott, but to invoke a flash mob of mystery shoppers to try the patience of the zero hour contract employees. Craig is labouring under the illusion that the former affirmative action of his motley crew sent Ashley homeward to think again.

The truth, when stripped of spin and Mr Muscle glimmer, is that King is a shyster who owes Ashley £5m. Ashley’s counsel is Adam Lewis QC,who charges £20,000 for fielding a few telephone calls. King’s underfunded hostile takeover will be subject to a pincer movement by Ashley and Green. The next two months will be the most difficult for the shyster new regime.

I watched that game at Firhill and can still see the look of utter astonishment on Rod McDonalds face when he was yellow carded for blessing himself. Being a young, black Englishman might not have helped – but his main crime was to appear to be a Catholic in a game against an dominant anti-catholic institution.

I can also hear the howls and hoots of laughter and derision from the visiting support when he was given a second yellow and sent off. He returned to England a little later.

A shameful disgusting afternoon that told the world what kind of culture predominated in Scotland.

I spoke a while back with an ex neighbour in Scotland who had a grandad who went ballistic when he saw a foreign black athlete bless himself during the Olympics. The quote was something like “That’s a beeping disgrace what he’s doing.”

He could just as easily have been at Firhill too.

With so much still cloaked in a veil of lies and self interest, it is difficult to accurately say when, how, or even if the Sevco Business saga will end. However, it seems that we are bang on schedule for the collapse of thems in a sporting sense, if Hollywood and Hammer can be used as a frame of reference.

11 wins on the trot, prior to the weekend, imposing and intimidating form, that had the rest of the Championship cowering. Just like any good Zombie movie, it started with such menace that the viewer could not see how these Zombies could ever be stopped, and surely humanity (the Championship) was doomed. But usually a third of the way through the movie, the main hero would land a lucky shot and kill a Zombie, and the first sign of Zombie weakness would show itself. Gradually the Championship….. Err humanity, would learn to master the Zombie threat to such an extent, that by the end of the movie children and pensioners, could easily elude and despatch the stumbling, comical Zombies.

So Hibs was just the start, the tide has turned. Look forward to the end of the season when the likes of Alloa, Dumbarton and Livingston will be whupin them Zombies good, and saving humanity in the process.

Point of the earlier post was that it wasn’t often that a player who had performed well for us decides to sign a long term contract, rather than move to Southampton or wherever for the money, and that was the shock. However I realise my attempt to mimic a tabloid headline to bring some humour to the point was clumsy and could be misconstrued. Some other posters did.

I can logon to post with iPad4 on broadband but it takes me to my profile page first, then I have to go back to ‘home’ to read or post on blog. I’m in Czech and adverts are Czech but not popping up or intrusive. It takes a wee while to load up compared to previous version.

With iphone 5s it takes forever to load but I can now get onto basic site to view only, with no pop ups or diverted. I can leave Java on or off and it works. The biggest issue reamins that I cannot ever log in to post. It was ok when we first migrated to the new site but have not been able to log on and post on phone for a while, reducing my involvement considerably ( stop chuckling at the back..)

Overall, apart from a few frustrations and grumbles I like the site format – if you could help me login on iphone that would be perfect.

It’s still the best CFC blog. Keep up the good work

Agreed Cap’n. Hopefully Biton and Rogic, along with Griff, will buy Ronny the time he needs to build a full team.

Developing our own players has to be the way forward for us in our economic situation. The cost of buying players who are the finished article is only going to become more prohibitive as a result of the tv deal down South.

  24. Winning Captains….still getting swamped with ads and page continually refreshing mate! It’s really making it hard to log on, let alone post anything.
