Great news that Mikael Lustig and Emilio Izaguirre have extended their contracts until 2017. Footballers’ careers flow on a few distinct tracks. Some are too hot for their clubs to retain, Victor Wanyama, who declined a contract renewal with almost 3 years of his initial deal remaining, fell into this category. Some, like Georgios Samaras, will represent diminishing value to their clubs, and attract only diminishing contracts.
I could make an argument that the players in the third category, who are highly valuable to their club, but are not so valuable that they are impossible to retain, are more important than the latter.
It’s important for Celtic to have outstanding achievers (especially up front) but clubs find it difficult to remain on-strategy if they have significant churn each season. Transfer income is great, and often needed, but ideally you would look at your squad around this time of the year and want to change no more than 3 players over the summer.
I reckon Celtic should be able to hold onto Lustig, Izaguirre, Matthews, Ambrose, Brown, Commons, Mulgrew, Stokes and Forrest until the club want to move them on. These players are the mainstay of our squad, hopefully Johansen will prove to be too. Forster and van Dijk fall into the same category as Wanyama and Hooper – they will have high paying options in England.
Forster and van Dijk will help get us into and compete in the Champions League, but two or three gems are useless if they are surrounded by players less polished bling.
The last 24 hours has been a salutary lesson on what will continue to happen until Celtic appoint a manager. The Daily Mail got the ball rolling when someone told them Roy Keane was leaving Dublin to speak to Celtic. This was good information, in as much as it was true, Celtic did meet Roy Keane, but the ‘paper put inappropriate weight upon it.
Soon everyone and their dog was reporting the deal was done. Which surprised Celtic.
Today’s news – there is no news.
‘News’ will continue to break and eventually one story will actually be the news we’re waiting for. There is value (reputation and advertising) in rushing out with a story before it’s confirmed or others are doing the same, and little consequence (zero damage to reputation and you get to keep the ad money) in getting it wrong, so stay tuned for the next instalment. Only this week, Pope Francis was talking about papal retirement, maybe he has another gig in mind.

SydneyTim,
Before everyone gets bored.
The game started with 3 MON signings, Balde, Lenny and Bbj.
And finished with 3 MON signings, Balde, Lenny and Pearson.

“SFTB. 5 or 6 years is a great return for the investment”
I am not arguing with that. We bought those big players to improve our standing with an eye to benefiting from an invite to the EPL on the back of their prowess and success. When that did not materialise, we entered another Celtic phase which they did not fancy. few of them contributed to WGS’s success

Good Afternoon from a pleasantly sunny Nordrhein Westfalen, after 3.5 days of incessant rain. Doesn’t half make the grass/moss grow.
Congratulations to Leftclicktic and his understandably intelligent daughter (Tim genes and a good education no doubt).
Got a message from my youngest Bhoy yesterday to say that he reckoned that his drink had been spiked in a Glasgow club. Lost a whole day as well as his specs. I thought a likely tale but he said he only went out with a couple of quid and I have no reason to disbelieve him.

My apologies for earlier!
Kojo……….if as you write you are so depressed about Keano and Celtic………how come you’re still laughin……?
Here’s what I can’t get my head around…
Celtic for the past decade have been at pains to keep their business to themselves until there’s something to say.
“Anyone who’s talking to the media isn’t talking to Celtic” and the likes.
Who’s bright idea was it to spill the beans regarding Roy Keane?
Keane is due to take the Ireland press conference last night. O’Neill takes it instead, and talks pretty openly about Keane, and approach from Desmond, and the state of play as regards Keane as Celtic’s next manager.
Lawwell the following morning – early – gives STV, Sky and BBC interviews, discussing Keane, something I can’t recall occurring perhaps ever, and certainly since before O’Neill himself got the gig.
Someone decided it was a good idea to go public, in the process, breaking the golden rule about doing business with Celtic.
Were Lawwell’s wee interviews this morning a public slapping for Keane?
And another thing…
WGS and MON before him were rightly criticised for being ‘Match of the Day Scouts’ or worse.. Sportscene Scouts.
Take a look at Keane’s signings. Looks like he only ever signed players he has perviously played 5 aside with. Not exactly an endorsement for the vaunted ‘student of the game’. Seems the furthest he ever cast his net for a player was Wigan, and he didn’t even stop off at the pier.
I suppose 6 months hanging about with MON will have rubbed off the many rough edges evident in his early management career.

Celtic have fecked it up letting Neil go, IMO, unless he felt the strain was too much being under so much pressure to deliver SO MUCH, all the Time – This is a distinct possibility.
Awe Naw is always worth talking to, Roy may be the perfect fit for Celtic at This Precise moment, who knows, nobody knows. He will be doing very well to do half as much as Neil, even if he is furnished with a lot more funds.

listen!!! the media are creating this so called frenzy of the new celtic manager to distract from the rotting decaying corpse that is sevco. i for one would rather have john collins with j kennedy as his number 2 but will be happy enough with roy. he will ter into the scottish media and treat the huns with pure snarling distain that they deserve. it will make a nice change for someone to fight back and in a dog eat dog world, roy has bigger fangs that thems. all this talk of lennon? as a tyrone native and big GAA man i respect him for what he did for us and what he endured but his brand of football was dreadful. bar a fluke against barca and a fluke is what it was, his reign was mediocre. time for a strong, competitive, forceful and dominant celtic side to emmerge and i for one am optimistic .
