Building mainstays, lessons from yesterday

1164

Great news that Mikael Lustig and Emilio Izaguirre have extended their contracts until 2017.  Footballers’ careers flow on a few distinct tracks.  Some are too hot for their clubs to retain, Victor Wanyama, who declined a contract renewal with almost 3 years of his initial deal remaining, fell into this category.  Some, like Georgios Samaras, will represent diminishing value to their clubs, and attract only diminishing contracts.

I could make an argument that the players in the third category, who are highly valuable to their club, but are not so valuable that they are impossible to retain, are more important than the latter.

It’s important for Celtic to have outstanding achievers (especially up front) but clubs find it difficult to remain on-strategy if they have significant churn each season.  Transfer income is great, and often needed, but ideally you would look at your squad around this time of the year and want to change no more than 3 players over the summer.

I reckon Celtic should be able to hold onto Lustig, Izaguirre, Matthews, Ambrose, Brown, Commons, Mulgrew, Stokes and Forrest until the club want to move them on.  These players are the mainstay of our squad, hopefully Johansen will prove to be too.  Forster and van Dijk fall into the same category as Wanyama and Hooper – they will have high paying options in England.

Forster and van Dijk will help get us into and compete in the Champions League, but two or three gems are useless if they are surrounded by players less polished bling.

The last 24 hours has been a salutary lesson on what will continue to happen until Celtic appoint a manager.  The Daily Mail got the ball rolling when someone told them Roy Keane was leaving Dublin to speak to Celtic.  This was good information, in as much as it was true, Celtic did meet Roy Keane, but the ‘paper put inappropriate weight upon it.

Soon everyone and their dog was reporting the deal was done.  Which surprised Celtic.

Today’s news – there is no news.

‘News’ will continue to break and eventually one story will actually be the news we’re waiting for.  There is value (reputation and advertising) in rushing out with a story before it’s confirmed or others are doing the same, and little consequence (zero damage to reputation and you get to keep the ad money) in getting it wrong, so stay tuned for the next instalment.  Only this week, Pope Francis was talking about papal retirement, maybe he has another gig in mind.

“9 of the players who started against hertz were inherited from Mon”

And most of them left at the drop of a hat when the wages were tightened.

Gordon came in the summer of 2005.

Petrov asked for a transfer in April 2006

Sutton left in Jan. 2006 (unfortunately injury meant he could not serve any club well)

    McNamara left summer 2005

    Hartson left summer 2006

Neil Lennon left summer 2007 and was by then not an effective player e.g. Pars SCF

Agathe left in 2006 having hardly played for us

Valgaeren left in the summer of 2005

Alan Thompson left in Jan 2007 but again barely featured latterly

Bobo left in the summer of 2009 but rarely played in those final 4 years (28 apps. in 05/6, and thereafter, 6, 4 and 0)

and Mjallby and Larsson were already gone

WGS did not get a lot of service from MON’s stalwarts getting the fading embers of Lennon and Hartson’s efforts and the benefit of Stan’s transfer fee mostly. Bobo and Sutton were unfortunate for different reasons but WGS got no real service from them and the achievements he made were with his own team.

Interesting stats, and there is little doubt that we had seen the best of the MON team that Gordon inherited.

It is not necessarily true, however,to say that we were left with players who were past their sell-by date.

Gordon came in with a remit to enforce discipline and cut the wage bill. To do those things meant reducing the influence of the senior players, and punting them if possible.

It also meant that youngsters had to kowtow or eff off, witness David Marshall and Charlie Mulgrew, for example.

Martin left him with an ageing but experienced squad which needed rejuvenated, and the kids with which to do it. He pissed them all off, apart from Aiden and Stephen McManus. Wrecked their careers,in fact.

And you know what? He did the exact same with most of the senior players he inherited.

It’s nothing personal with him, btw. I looked forward immensely to him as a manager.

    Titles and cups,magic.

Wrecked careers, not for me. A disgrace in my opinion.

  5. off oot, going to go play counterstrike global offensive (a Competitive game) and converse with 4 Europeans (and this includes Russians) who will be in my team, working as a team wins games, being ignorant and idiotic does not win games.

I love the game itself and the concept, the unwritten rule in competitive gaming, no matter what the game is, is that people speak in English. There is a function to disable your own teams (individual players as well) voice communications so it really detracts from the team play.

Sevco’s opponents in their upcoming glamour friendly, Victoria Highlanders, seem to know a thing or two:

‘[Sevco] FC, a soccer club from Glasgow, Scotland with one of the largest and most loyal fan followings in the world, will play the Victoria Highlanders in an exhibition game July 21.

“Everybody in the football world has heard of [Sevco],” said Highlanders striker Blair Sturrock, a native of Scotland.

The friendly will be played at Centennial Stadium. Highlanders GM Mark DeFrias said he expects a capacity crowd of 5,000.

“Rangers have 6.3 million followers in 660 supporter groups around the world, including two in Vancouver and ones in Seattle and Calgary”…. said DeFrias….

Among that diehard fan base is Steve Paton of Victoria and his 19-year-old son Cameron Paton, the latter who just returned from touring Ibrox and its storied trophy room. Paton said he fully expects fans in Celtic green to be at Centennial Stadium for the sole purpose of rooting against Rangers.

“This will be massive,” he said. “Almost everybody born in Scotland doesn’t live there anymore….. . . I don’t wear anything green,” added Paton’

“It is not necessarily true, however,to say that we were left with players who were past their sell-by date.”

No, they were a mixture of guys that were past it, guys who did not fancy WGS, guys who WGS did not fancy, and guys who were being paid more than they were worth.. Only one player went on to have a career elsewhere and we got big money for him.

“Martin left him with an ageing but experienced squad which needed rejuvenated, and the kids with which to do it. He pissed them all off, apart from Aiden and Stephen McManus. Wrecked their careers,in fact.”

    Interesting attribution.

If none of them made a career elsewhere, was that WGS’s fault? Did he sabotage the confidence of Jackie & Charlie at Wolves or was he right that Jackie was not worth a rise in pay (Wolves, United and Aberdeen suggest the latter) and Charlie did need to sort himself out before he eventually rediscovered form 3 clubs after Celtic? It took David Marshall a few years but now he is an Arsenal target . Some career ruin???

Did he ruin Didier Agathe’s career or did the same faults WGS detected in him become evident to MON at Villa who also let him go and the Blackburn manager who did not take him on?

Was Chris Sutton’s career, already threatened by injury, terminated by his eye injury or was he already struggling to perform?

Bobo is a complicated one. He was obviously still good enough for us but, by the time he left, was a 3rd and 4th choice centre back for two lowly French teams.

Alan Thompson had no career after us. Did WGS cause that or were some of Alan’s habits catching up with him?

How does a manager whose personality pisses off so many senior and junior players, allegedly, manage to promote a last 16 CL defence out of the journeymen Caldwell & McManus, kicks on improvements in Aiden McGeady (a player who fought him as he helped him), forges a solid midfield out of the journeymen Robson & Hartley, and promotes youth and fringe players like McManus, McGeady and Maloney get it so wrong?

We kicked on as a team. We got two last 16 CL places, not by luck, but by being a team. We were not great to watch but we had a team ethic that kicked us on from being CL group makeweights and UEFA cup runners up and quarter finalists. The wee man proved the begrudgers wrong and is still doing so.
