Building mainstays, lessons from yesterday

1164

Great news that Mikael Lustig and Emilio Izaguirre have extended their contracts until 2017.  Footballers’ careers flow on a few distinct tracks.  Some are too hot for their clubs to retain, Victor Wanyama, who declined a contract renewal with almost 3 years of his initial deal remaining, fell into this category.  Some, like Georgios Samaras, will represent diminishing value to their clubs, and attract only diminishing contracts.

I could make an argument that the players in the third category, who are highly valuable to their club, but are not so valuable that they are impossible to retain, are more important than the latter.

It’s important for Celtic to have outstanding achievers (especially up front) but clubs find it difficult to remain on-strategy if they have significant churn each season.  Transfer income is great, and often needed, but ideally you would look at your squad around this time of the year and want to change no more than 3 players over the summer.

I reckon Celtic should be able to hold onto Lustig, Izaguirre, Matthews, Ambrose, Brown, Commons, Mulgrew, Stokes and Forrest until the club want to move them on.  These players are the mainstay of our squad, hopefully Johansen will prove to be too.  Forster and van Dijk fall into the same category as Wanyama and Hooper – they will have high paying options in England.

Forster and van Dijk will help get us into and compete in the Champions League, but two or three gems are useless if they are surrounded by players less polished bling.

The last 24 hours has been a salutary lesson on what will continue to happen until Celtic appoint a manager.  The Daily Mail got the ball rolling when someone told them Roy Keane was leaving Dublin to speak to Celtic.  This was good information, in as much as it was true, Celtic did meet Roy Keane, but the ‘paper put inappropriate weight upon it.

Soon everyone and their dog was reporting the deal was done.  Which surprised Celtic.

Today’s news – there is no news.

‘News’ will continue to break and eventually one story will actually be the news we’re waiting for.  There is value (reputation and advertising) in rushing out with a story before it’s confirmed or others are doing the same, and little consequence (zero damage to reputation and you get to keep the ad money) in getting it wrong, so stay tuned for the next instalment.  Only this week, Pope Francis was talking about papal retirement, maybe he has another gig in mind.

Happy that Emilio and Mikael have signed new contracts but in the absence of a manager and an assistant manager who has decided that they are part of the managers plans for the future? I believe them to be good players and valuable assets but will the new manager believe the same. Or will the new manager not have a say on signing policy and just be a first team coach?

    Just askin….

I asked a similar question earlier. Who is making these decisions?????

    ***************

Kevin Bacon decided this one. Absolute no brainer to tie these ghuys in before World Cup (in izzie’s case) and final year of contracts.

Anyone who didn’t see them as keepers should have their celtic scarves and CQN speedos confiscated forthwith!

I agree there’s a far wider issue of governance and lines of responsibility that Many of us would like more transparency on – ie does PL make 100% of the decisions or just 98?!!?

But keeping these guys is a decision the ballbhoys would have been able to her right. IMHO.

  4. Got to love the guys on here who drool over coaches we know virtually nothing about!

Latest is this guy Paul Clement -he must be brilliant then -working at RM and PSG !

However being brutally honest how many of our players would get a game for those clubs?

Does this guy have any idea about our club or the league we play in?

Yet he must be better than Keane!

Let’s see how many clubs rush to sign up this guy -I would suspect that perhaps not that many -a bit the last wunderkind AVB- that went well for Chelscum and Spurs!

Keane gets my vote because his appointment would signal that DD might spend a bit more on players + the guy is a real Tim+ he is box office

Still think it won’t happen -because of RK family not wanting to come up here and be exposed to the nonsense that goes along with the job of being our manager!

The important point is that Alan’s ability to persuade managers to pick him to play, and the ageing process had caught up with Alan. I have no wish to circulate rumours on here.

Players get frozen out by bosses all the time, young and old. Their careers are only ruined if they let them be ruined or contribute to it themselves.

Chris Sutton was not a success at Chelsea but their manager did not ruin him when he never picked him. Alan Thompson was a Bolton regular but often dropped by Villa. that did not ruin him. The Leeds and Hartlepool managements who failed to select him did not do so because WGS told them not to.

It is childish to blame your own faults on others.

Unanimous support on here for it.

Mate, I think you must be confused.

I have posted not one solitary word about the 2 full-backs signing new contracts. I have no problem whatsoever with that and have certainly not posted anything wither for or against it.

Interesting imagery: Me as Pi to Keane’s tiger. Although, in my view, Pi and the tiger were one and the same.

I admire Keane’s relentless determination to prevail. When at the top of his powers as a footballer, his mentality combined with his skills was a powerful and successful combination. Quite awesome actually.

When his skills diminished he found (as did Celtic and Clyde btw) that the mentality on its own was insufficient.

The mentality on its own is equally insufficient in football management, and the concern is that the Keane has yet to demonstrate that he has the management skills prerequisite to the job.

Croppyboy, he’s a Tim, he would get more money to spend.

I don’t think Roy Is a Celtic supporter. He has a Man U season ticket. I didn’t think being a catholic is a ore qualifier for the job if that’s what you mean?

If Dermot gives him more to spend do you think he would spend it better than the 80 million he spent at Sunderland?
