Burke and Weah weigh in, battle for second, Levein returns to norm

385

There can be little more satisfying experiences for a manager than seeing two new strikers get on the score sheet so quickly.  Oliver Burke and Timo Weah have scored twice since making their debuts on Saturday.  With Vakoun Issouf Bayo taking a halftime bow and Odsonne Edouard back in training, December’s scenario when Mikey Johnston was asked to play as striker seems a distant memory.

All Celtic can do to increase their lead at the top of the table is to continue to win and watch what happens below.  Kilmarnock moved into second place with a win over Newco last night, but they travel to fourth placed Aberdeen on Saturday, who, if they win, would be the third team to occupy second place within four days.

Earlier this season, when Hearts were top of the table and enjoying lots of media accolade, I was asked by someone not too familiar with the game if Craig Levein was a good manager.  At the time Craig was popping up everywhere, enjoying a glow of satisfaction.  “No.  Craig Levein is not a good manager” was my reply.  The Edinburgh are sixth and sinking fast.  Craig Levein’s performances have returned to the norm.

The level of player that we would like to sign, i.e., an experienced pro, is in a price range, both fee and salary, that is above our guaranteed income, or at least at the extreme end.

Also, this level of player, who would be good enough for Europe, mostly won’t come to the SPFL.

Therefore, what we have, is money that is no good to us.

Perhaps, just perhaps, the thinking is, we invest in up and coming young prospects, develop them and hopefully sell them on for a large profit.

This policy should run in conjunction with the policy of producing Academy players for the first team, while retaining some of our senior pros, like, Brown. Gordon, Lustig, until we have a natural transition.

Something like we are doing now, for instance.

  3. My friends in Celtic.

I understand and appreciate posters talking about contingency signings. It is prudent to discuss and I trust Celtic will be doing similar.

In light of the many posters thinking that BR will be away in the summer, is it not strange that not one post has discussed a contingency if this occurs. Our main cog in the wheel possibly departing and not one post discussing this eventuality and potential replacement.

Personally I hope and trust that BR will remain to continue unfinished business.

  6. We have FIVE first team Chs..We have THREE first team Right backs and we have TWO lbs

Thats 10 for at most 4 places.

A first team CH better or equal to what we have is not going to join in January to sit on the bench . Our first pick CH’s are not going to relinquish the positions.

We need some serious pruning. We are stockpiling players

  7. GOAL: Weah makes it 300 domestic goals for Celtic under Brendan Rodgers!

When Timothy Weah slotted the ball into the back of the St Mirren net to make it 4-0 for the Hoops on Wednesday night, it was also a significant milestone for Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side… because it was the 300th domestic goal the team have scored since the Irishman took over in May 2016.

    ====================

Its no good if we don;t learn from mistakes.

A year ago I was on the other side of the debate arguing about the difficulty in any given window of getting the right player and convincing him to come to Scotland etc.

The problem however is this is an ongoing problem and the list of players recruited since BR was appointed is not very impressive. He has largely succeeded with players who were already here.

So maybe we have to push the boat out (and I’m only talking bout £4m-£5m) to bring more potential players onto our radar.

We paid £4.4m for Scott Brown nearly 12 years ago and that has served us well. Signing players 21+ for ~£2m to loan out is not a viable strategy.

These guys must have a level of current ability where they are good enough to contribute to Celtic now and have that development potential. The likes of Jack Hendry do not fit the bill as being good enough or young enough if being loaned out.

It comes back to the blurring of the lines between projects and your backup first team players/subs. It has resulted in a number of players who are nowhere near good enough becoming our go to guys when the first choice players get injured.

The resources are there. Its just a few tweaks to the ‘strategy’ that Paul67 talks about that are required here.

I am shocked that I, a non-fan of PL, seems to have been the only poster to have replied to WITS’ call to increase PL’s remuneration.

Not only is it rude to ignore WITS (sorry, WITS), it is greatly disrespectful to the great and all-powerful PL….

you lot call yourselves Board lovers, but you wont even support an increase in PL’s pay?! what is that about? some Board lovers you lot are…

…. I am told that PL reads CQN, you know…. if you dont support the increase in his pay, your cards (and days on the pro-Board happyclapper train) could be well and truly marked.

Our Board does have a history for giving out information to the coppers you know …. do you really want to be next to be woken up by a knock on your door at 5 am?

    Vote Pedro

  12. Big Peter is The Law………..it’s his world and we aw just live in it.

You guys think Bayo’s welcome in the Paradise spotlight was just for him?

    No way!

    – Big Peter just communicating with the rest of the…………. “illuminati”….

    Ouch!

    :)

    oh yeah!

  13. Lots of talk about future planning and the balance of the squad. Glass half full guy would tell us we are actually doing what most are saying we are not. If all our out of contract players move on without additions to the squad next season’s squad would be:

    Goalkeeper: Bain gordon Hazard Doolen

    Leftback: K.T gutman

    Rightback: Ralston

    C.b: ajer samunivic henry Commper

Cm: mcgregor christie ntcham bitton mulumba kouassi benyu rogic

Wingers: Forrest Johnson Sinclair Morgan Hayes Aziri

    Striker: Bayo Eduard Griffith

So we need a right back (right now would be nice) and a centreback. We may need another centreback if anyone else goes. We would have 8 players vying for 3 slots in the midfield, 6 players vying for 2 wide areas and 3 players vying for 1 position up top.

It is unlikely we would not be willing to move on compper, mulumbu, hayes or benyu. It looks likely that ntcham wants out too.

we are not far off where we need to be next season.

    Bada Bing,

It’s all relative to your roots, but a derby, with both teams competing at the business end of the second tier, one being top, should make for an interesting game.

I checked when I saw your post – I would’ve been astounded if it wasn’t televised.

Don’t forget – one of Celtic’s current top players was developed by one of these sides. Don’t see Auchinlek providing you with similar any time soon.
