Bury, Bolton, the remarkably durable English game

443

I have heard a lot of nonsense as to why Bury are this morning expelled from the Football League and Bolton Wanderers are two weeks away from a similar fate.  There are not ‘too many teams’, in fact, attendances across all levels of the game in England are at historical highs and compare favourably to those in mainland Europe.  More choice has led to more attendees.

Inadequate ‘fit and proper tests’ are not to blame either.  None of those responsible for the plight of these two clubs had red flags in their backgrounds.  The suggestion that supporter representation on the board would have inhibited clubs spending their way into trouble is perhaps the most laughable suggestion.  Can you imagine a fans’ rep. at a board meeting saying, “Hang on, we can’t sign him, that’s going to push our wage levels to unsustainable levels”?

Football clubs are remarkably durable.  Most of the senior club formed in the 19th century are still in business.  The failure rate is incredibly low comparable to any industry.

The grass roots game, which Bury is a part of, is healthier in England than in anywhere in the world.  Bury over-spent, securitised their stadium and had multi-year commitments they could no longer service.  They failed because they are the worst crop in the field.

Bolton were a fixture in the Premier League when the late Phil Gartside was in charge, but the loss of revenue from that source following relegation is like nothing else in world sport.  I’m amazed we see so few failures of this nature, but by any reasonable expectation, failures like Bury and Bolton should be more common than they are.

There are those in the game who think ‘the model’ of English football is broken.  I have been reading the tea leaves of English football finances for decades.  The model looked broken before Financial Fair Play brought a correction to the market, but we will need to see a lot more Bolton and Burys fall down before that theory stands up.

  1. Scrolling back, I never thought I would say this but I thought Hamilton Tim was wrong & Macjay correct in the exchanges re Burnley,

I do believe we are all entitled to privacy if we do decide to release derails about ourselves or what we happen to be doing., which most of us do all the time, then fine but I believe nobody has the right to demand those details.

  2. Morning Europeans!

Had this weird dream we’d finally signed a full international RB who’d been at several name Euro and EPL clubs. Seemed a larger than life character who’s a piano-playing polyglot and was last transferred for about 5mill and became a kinda semi-flawed fans favourite. Anyhoo, we’d signed him basically free on a try-before-buy basis, and heaps of folk were slagging the club like fugh man; pure mad it was and precious few thocht or said, hey kudos to the suits for a mibby good bit of bizo here. Yawn…oh wait, wiz it a dream because mibby ra club actually, patiently done a good thing and if we waited to see, it might just be smart as fuch.

Now a waking nightmare might be enriching the Dons coffers to sign two carthorses. HH

  3. Oh and while I’m ruminating about Dons players…embdy else fancy a quick punt on G Shinnie as a temp LB and sometimes midfield combatant relief for Broony?

  4. Re the read back – perhaps “strong drink taken” may have been the “excuse” for a couple of those excessive and unfortunate exchanges between Tims………….

Sad, bad and mental – no matter how it’s dressed up.

Not for the first time has that contributor been singled out for abusive treatment and language –

I trust the mods will deal with it appropriately and definitively.

Hearing that many Glasgow based Poles will be in Ibrox tomorrow night. Wearing Celtic tops and waving Irish Tricolour flag. A couple of hundred Celtic supporters Polska Celts giving Celtic songs laldy in their crowd too. Wonder how der hun will react?

    =====================

A bit risky, I seem to recall they weren’t too happy with us after we skelped them a couple of years ago!

  6. Have to say I know nothing about Mortiz. Stats that are flying around don’t make good reading, but like any player that signs he should be given a chance…

HOWEVER! The very fact we’ve brought a guy in on loan raises massive alarm bells, we clearly haven’t identified proper targets to replace Lustig having known he was going to be going last summer or January at the latest. This is another balls up in a long line of balls ups in Celtic’s recruitment plan in recent years.

WE HAVE BEEN CAUGHT SLEEPING AS A CLUB!

Dramatic change is needed – now.

… Good luck to Lenny and the Bhoys tonight. Hoping for a good performance to give us something to look forward to during the dark Autumn nights. Hopefully a wee shot in the arm, before Sunday too. No more sleeps (Jobo CSC).

A fine response to a very fine Tim (from Hamilton !).

I very strongly agree with your main sentiment that Caledonis Unfair is desperate for THEIR team to succeed . That being so, we really must get behind our team.

Criticism of The Board might be better done via John Paul Taylot ( liaison Officer).

    a) It might actually reach the ears of Board members;

    b) It dimishes the negative feelings so many would like to create amongst our support.

HT is a smashing bloke and a totally commited supporter. I feel he was wrong on this occasion but hardly `a new low`

I think the “new low” was DD’s post calling Burnly78 a few names,

I’ve met BURNLEY78 a few times and I know he is a BIG Tim and a very nice chap to boot!

Mibbe have another look at that post DD>

  10. Another signing today or is everyone in Stockholm?

Sky Sports saying Killie have rejected a £750,000 offer from Sunderland(?) for Taylor.

Value a bit nearer the mark?

  11. Does anyone else wonder how the UK government can stand there insisting on following the democratic process… “this is what the people wanted… blah blah blah” whilst simultaneously shutting down the very body duly elected by… the democratic process!?

  12. There’ll be a few serial flouncers….and ” I don’t post much here” type of declarations before the day’s oooot.

  14. I’m very disappointed we didn’t reach the CL this year. I think we have a better chance next season, all going well.

Why? Upheaval is never a good thing.

We are likely to have a summer exodus again but none of these are key players (or even first choice backups)

Sinclair, Hayes, Arzani, Bitton & Miller

Craig Gordon is also in his final year. His importance to the squad depends on Fraser Forster’s.

Bauer & Forster are here on loan. If those players do well I’d expect to see them signed up as full-time players.

Firstly, I’d like to thank you for taking my post in the spirit it was intended I do think that was extremely commendable. Most posters won’t know that we have met, though briefly.

I would never, ever knowingly ‘out’ someone on here or on any other public forum. As someone who has been on the receiving end of such behaviour I’m acutely aware of the damage and risks that can be a result of such actions.

I’d been made aware of a couple of your posts regarding those who disagree with the Celtic Plc board and in particular with regards to this transfer window. I took exception to the suggestion that the mental health of such posters should be assessed.

I fully accept that you’re a long standing supporter of Celtic prior to any business agreement or deal you may now have with the club. However, the manner in which you address those posters did make me think of your motivation to do so.

There was no malice intended in my initial post, it was a genuine question, I’m glad and grateful that you took it in this way.

Lets get the job done tonight Celtic. Some very interesting ties await if we do so, which will give the team vital European experience and another yardstick to measure our progress.

  17. Said it before and I’ll say it again before upcoming high profile European and domestic games ..

” Scottish clubs playing in Europe do so under UEFA’s mandatory Strict Liability.

It’s time the SFA and SPFL imposed the same stipulations on clubs playing in their competitions, as long as it’s backed up by strong sanctions as per UEFA. This would soon end unacceptable behaviour whilst still allowing fans to support their teams and enjoy the rivalry without the totally unacceptable behaviour ”

Thanks for your message. Lets just hope we are all smiling come 10pm tonight as we look forward to being in the draw tomorrow as Scotland only representatives and onward to Sunday.

Sadly not in Stockholm tonight so watching in Grace’s in Merchant City.

  20. Go tell the Spartim on

Ive always taken the view that everyone posts from their own perspective, and commercial vested interests could always be one of the many facets that make up a posters “character” on line. I dont think anyone should be upset at this or view their musings any less important or valuable as anyone else’s.

I do think name calling and reference to potential health issues are uncalled for but appreciate that things are said sometimes in the heat of the moment or at inopportune times, ive always thought the right to reply and apologising (if necessary) was integral to this sites inherent values.

Lets hope our team wins tonight or at least progresses

  22. Romanian site gsp.ro is claiming we’re close to signing Omrani from Cluj for £3m. They say it could be concluded tomorrow. We’ll see. I don’t know if they’re Romania’s answer to the Daily Ranger or if they’re reliable.

Decent big player, I reckon – not quick but strong and awkward. Anyway, we’ll see shortly if there’s anything in the rumour.

  23. traditionalist88 on

‘According to GSP.RO sources, the footballer would sign tomorrow or tomorrow, the stage of negotiations being an extremely advanced one.’

We may know more tomorrow. And if not tomorrow, definitely tomorrow.

  24. CHAVEZ

The Cluj fwd seemed v similar style to the Hearts’ Uche Ikpeazu and we’d surely get the latter for less.

I actually liked the presence of their Damjan Djokovic – big strong mid, puts it about a bit and was a decent match for Broony.

  25. Quadrophenian – Nah, I think Ikpeazu is a lump of wood actually. Strong as an ox but hopeless IMO. This guy Omrani can score as well as being awkward to play against.

    Djokovic was decent tho, definitely.
