Bury, Bolton, the remarkably durable English game

443

I have heard a lot of nonsense as to why Bury are this morning expelled from the Football League and Bolton Wanderers are two weeks away from a similar fate.  There are not ‘too many teams’, in fact, attendances across all levels of the game in England are at historical highs and compare favourably to those in mainland Europe.  More choice has led to more attendees.

Inadequate ‘fit and proper tests’ are not to blame either.  None of those responsible for the plight of these two clubs had red flags in their backgrounds.  The suggestion that supporter representation on the board would have inhibited clubs spending their way into trouble is perhaps the most laughable suggestion.  Can you imagine a fans’ rep. at a board meeting saying, “Hang on, we can’t sign him, that’s going to push our wage levels to unsustainable levels”?

Football clubs are remarkably durable.  Most of the senior club formed in the 19th century are still in business.  The failure rate is incredibly low comparable to any industry.

The grass roots game, which Bury is a part of, is healthier in England than in anywhere in the world.  Bury over-spent, securitised their stadium and had multi-year commitments they could no longer service.  They failed because they are the worst crop in the field.

Bolton were a fixture in the Premier League when the late Phil Gartside was in charge, but the loss of revenue from that source following relegation is like nothing else in world sport.  I’m amazed we see so few failures of this nature, but by any reasonable expectation, failures like Bury and Bolton should be more common than they are.

There are those in the game who think ‘the model’ of English football is broken.  I have been reading the tea leaves of English football finances for decades.  The model looked broken before Financial Fair Play brought a correction to the market, but we will need to see a lot more Bolton and Burys fall down before that theory stands up.

    Bauer…

    Good crosser of the ball

    Good passer of the ball

    Good engine

Good tackler …….is he our right back …….because he’s just as good in the left back position and right midfield too .

Here’s hoping he stays injury free. ;))

Celtic have signed the Austrian international right-back Moritz Bauer on a season-long loan from Stoke City. They are also still in talks with Kilmarnock regarding Scotland defender Greg Taylor.

  3. Apparently Bauer was Stoke’s best right back until a falling out with the manager

Not sure if that’s true but willing to give him a chance.

Still need a left back and def midfielder

We seem to forget how Mr desmond lamented the demise of Rangers. Bad for business. Lawwell feels exactly the same. whilst most of us on here would celebrate newco going the same way as oldco Gers, our leaders see it otherwise.

  5. Bauer was mentioned as a possible signing for us about a year ago and I have tracked his progress since then because of that, he has hardly had a start for Stoke in that time, very occasionally.

True fella. Wanted a RB. Got a RB. He and Big Tam will do fine and leaves Tony Ralston further away from the field, which is good. Tony ain’t good enough.

Mendy as CM rumoured which would be fantastic coup – Makalele type that would signal a better use of Scott Brown perhaps and a position we need to recruit against.

Melling would be good too. A win tomorrow night would be sooper and humping the hun tremendous.

But some will still complain regardless….

Nice we have signed a right back despite some reports saying our business was done. Hopefully a few more to come.

  8. Well done Celtic for landing us a new right back, one would imagine all those confidently predicting we wouldn’t sign anyone would have the good grace to admit they are wrong but I won’t hold my breath.

We need a left back & a midfield enforcer (Victor would do fine) & we are good to go. COYBIG

    High praise indeed ;)

Agree with those who say give him a chance. A lot who have seen or heard about him are very positive. And we should know by now about pre-judging players though many probably too young to remember the day we signed a 33 year old Slovakian, who certainly wasn’t mentioned in the rumour pages before he was announced!

Frankly , I`m not at all familiar with some of those mentioned as potential recruits.

I just trust Celtic to do the best they can in what is a market fraught with financial uncertainty. Viz. Bury.

I could never support an organisation in which I had no trust.

Find it hard to believe that others can.

    Anyway , on to victory.

Thanks pal. Let’s give the guy a chance to see how he performs in the Hoops. 👍

  13. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Thought it might be manu, they setup the purchase price as a club debt, so likely put the club into debt forever.

  14. Glazers are the people running Manchester United into the ground.

Doing the same with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nightmare scenario.

  15. If news came from JohnJames you can guarantee it’s pish.

  16. Bauer won player of the year for Rubin Kazan in 2017 and broke into the international setup. Made a move to the EPL but fell out with everyone at Stoke. He was identified as a negative influence. He hasn’t missed out of games due to lack of quality. Hopefully Neil can manage him better.

  17. Hope he works out but don’t forget we wanted Baldock of Sheffield Utd. (good player), then we went for Smith who is Stoke first choice. So this guy was behind Smith in pecking order for Stoke. Who knows ?

  18. I thought there would be an upsetting rumour prior to the games but the Glazier stuff is way beyond the earthly bounds of Guff……………

Clearly, it is aimed at unsettling Celtica, by some sleekit pane in the erse………………

    ___

Would also point out that Stoke thought so highly of him after signing him that they gave him a new deal after 6 months to tie him down long-term.

  21. So we have signed a Stoke reserve, why did it take so long? We needed players in for CL, why now at the death? Do we only bring players (hopefully) in now as we have therefore saved 3 months wages?

This is criminal with so much money in the bank

Stoke reserve is hardly the whole story. Do a bit of reading before you start moaning incessantly.

We had a new RB for the Cluj game.

  24. For 2 years we have known that Lustig was past his sell- by date and we get a Stoke reserve on a 1 season loan. Just not good enough Celtic.

  25. TIMALOY29

So how did the Cluj game go ? He has played less than 10 games for Stoke first team in a year, is that what you want ?

  26. must say that fits in with celtic ambition waiting forever on atransfer of quality and we end up with a reserve I bet neil lennon will praise peter lawell like a good puppet
