Bury, Bolton, the remarkably durable English game

443

I have heard a lot of nonsense as to why Bury are this morning expelled from the Football League and Bolton Wanderers are two weeks away from a similar fate.  There are not ‘too many teams’, in fact, attendances across all levels of the game in England are at historical highs and compare favourably to those in mainland Europe.  More choice has led to more attendees.

Inadequate ‘fit and proper tests’ are not to blame either.  None of those responsible for the plight of these two clubs had red flags in their backgrounds.  The suggestion that supporter representation on the board would have inhibited clubs spending their way into trouble is perhaps the most laughable suggestion.  Can you imagine a fans’ rep. at a board meeting saying, “Hang on, we can’t sign him, that’s going to push our wage levels to unsustainable levels”?

Football clubs are remarkably durable.  Most of the senior club formed in the 19th century are still in business.  The failure rate is incredibly low comparable to any industry.

The grass roots game, which Bury is a part of, is healthier in England than in anywhere in the world.  Bury over-spent, securitised their stadium and had multi-year commitments they could no longer service.  They failed because they are the worst crop in the field.

Bolton were a fixture in the Premier League when the late Phil Gartside was in charge, but the loss of revenue from that source following relegation is like nothing else in world sport.  I’m amazed we see so few failures of this nature, but by any reasonable expectation, failures like Bury and Bolton should be more common than they are.

There are those in the game who think ‘the model’ of English football is broken.  I have been reading the tea leaves of English football finances for decades.  The model looked broken before Financial Fair Play brought a correction to the market, but we will need to see a lot more Bolton and Burys fall down before that theory stands up.

  1. On the plus side, Bauer is a qualified pilot, he can fly Lawwell to his cushy new job with UEFA👍

If you read back to my first post today you will read that I have been tracking his progress (😩) for the past year as we showed interest then, he has played very few first team games in that time.. My point there is he has not been playing at a high level for more than a year.

Was simply pointing out that we can;t really judge a player without seeing him play.

I’ve already dealt with your first point about keeping Lawwell in a job – even if he turns out to be a superstar this will not exonerate the patchworked mess we resembled against Cluj. That was mostly on Lenny to be honest but we are still trying to finalise our defence and this should have been completed 6/8 weeks ago.

Think about it, he plays games, gets fit, does well, he will be off to Newcastle/West Brom or similar for 40k plus a week

If he plays well enough this year to earn an EPL move then that’s still a good thing!

  7. Welcome to Celtic to our new RB. No reason to doubt him and hopefully he is a huge success and signs permanently – I want him to be great.

However if the extent of and expertise of our scouting and recruitment is a loan deal from a struggling Division 2 club (refuse to call it the championship) then that I’m afraid is the real story. Happy to be wrong but the outlook is a little gloomy……

  8. FFS This place would give you Ire at times, This guy has played in the top tiers of Swizz, Russian & English Leagues. Looks like there has been a fall out at Stoke & the guy has been sidelined there.

It happens some guys are rubbish with one Club and a star with the next.

I know Elhamed signing was ridiculed here whilst the Boli one was generally welcomed, after a couple of games the positions were reversed.

I admit I have never seen this ghuy play & haven’t a clue whether he will be good bad or indifferent and I’m pretty certain that most on here are in the same boat.

He is in now, let’s give him a chance & stop the endless whinging.

  9. Guys,

We got Odsonne Edouard in the same circumstances. A loan with an option to buy. How did that work out. ?

I think PL gambles every year with CL qualification he’d rather not spend money in case we dont qualify rather than spend money to help us qualify. Maybe he has a spreadsheet that works out the risk and to him, as an accountant, it isnt worth the risk. i think thats a fair point to make. The usual caveats apply that we may not get our top picks until CL group participation is won, but its the treatment of contempt from his soundbites that do him no favours and i think that this time there is a fair chunk of supporters, not just on this site or at the games, that think this time his intransigence is now too much. If we’re not in the CL group at the start of the season then what chance have we got of getting our primary targets in the January window, when that would make the most sense to buy.

We’ve seen this movie too many times from him now, he is either doing it deliberately or is too arrogant to see or address his failings and correct them. Show me how he has learned from his mistakes, as we all make them.

At the end of the day, most of us on here all want the same thing.

    As ever, in Celtic

Could well be. It sure wouldn’t be an attempt at burying another break news story… nah definitely not the latter.

It does have a minor touch of deflection to it though.

  13. Corky- et al- I hope anyone who puts the Hoops on is a huge success, talk about stable doors? Did we give ourselves the best possible chance of making the CL?

    Answer- no

We are still scratching about for players to get to the Europa League ffs, since Cluj,a free transfer, and 2 loans. We knew months ago we were losing our whole back 4,same patchwork defence routine, same as last season actually. There is no structure in place, for player succession, and asset management, Lawwell’s job.

  14. OE and Calmac will be away next summer. still time to punt SS and ON this week.. SB will be done next year. so basically need a new squad. this is what happens with no planning. get players in to put pressure on the players buy players better than you have not w don’sell them then look for players especially loan players when you have been knocked out of the most important competion

  15. Can anyone advise on what’s reasonable to expect from the transfer “market”………?

Me, I think medium to long term we’re goosed – moreso on the back of a hun mucked-up scoddish set up rather than anything much we’ve done….. or no’ done……………

TBH I think we’re onto plums in terms of growth – the League is rotten and lead by skoundrels and eejits, making the worst of a bad job.

Could our own Bhoys do better? probably, don’t know really.

If we don’t leave, and I can’t see us managing it now I think we are destined to be parked on the hard shoulder never mind the slow lane.

    I blame the huns…..

I presume we could have gotten anyone in for each position but again presumably someone has to recommend them and we have to agree with the valuation and summation?

He was 8 years younger and we already had Moussa and a fully dialled in Griffiths. Nobody is against signing projects with an option to buy but not someone who cant get a game for Stoke, to cover a key position, and crucially weeks after we’ve been horsed out of Europe and the previous right back left the building. Its not good enough.

    C’MON THE CELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. by a board who let Huns into league.. say nothing about cheating.. have DDD saying how wonderful they are .. appalling management of money.. tried to be smart with SS to get money for him and freeze him out… but let Lustig go with no cover and no RB for CL qualifiers! Nevermindthe appointment od NL.. wthout looking for any candiates!

  25. With all the mismanagement we have won 8 Titles in a row and 3 Trebles in past 3 years.

So far this year we have had one absolutely shite game. It wasn’t lack of resources or personnel that created the shit storm.

It was Lenny making a cock up in setting the team, Brooney having a rare nightmare & Bain having an off night as well.

We weren’t great against Dunfermline but we got the result and we came back on track with AIK & Hertz, big game tomorrow night, get behind the team & leave those with an agenda have their happy hour, they will be posted missing when we win as always.

  26. David 17,

Yes I also want top class players in to mitigate our departures, but we have to judge him on how he performs.

What about SS, is he even training with the first team now ???

  27. if you don’t care about that I would say you are not Celtic supporter but maybe a Celtic PLC fan!

  28. If I can summarise, we have around 50 million in the bank and unless we sign Messi before Sunday then Sevco will start favourites with the bookies to beat us. Think about that, this should not be tolerated, it is unacceptable, we should be so far ahead of them.
