Bury, Bolton, the remarkably durable English game

443

I have heard a lot of nonsense as to why Bury are this morning expelled from the Football League and Bolton Wanderers are two weeks away from a similar fate.  There are not ‘too many teams’, in fact, attendances across all levels of the game in England are at historical highs and compare favourably to those in mainland Europe.  More choice has led to more attendees.

Inadequate ‘fit and proper tests’ are not to blame either.  None of those responsible for the plight of these two clubs had red flags in their backgrounds.  The suggestion that supporter representation on the board would have inhibited clubs spending their way into trouble is perhaps the most laughable suggestion.  Can you imagine a fans’ rep. at a board meeting saying, “Hang on, we can’t sign him, that’s going to push our wage levels to unsustainable levels”?

Football clubs are remarkably durable.  Most of the senior club formed in the 19th century are still in business.  The failure rate is incredibly low comparable to any industry.

The grass roots game, which Bury is a part of, is healthier in England than in anywhere in the world.  Bury over-spent, securitised their stadium and had multi-year commitments they could no longer service.  They failed because they are the worst crop in the field.

Bolton were a fixture in the Premier League when the late Phil Gartside was in charge, but the loss of revenue from that source following relegation is like nothing else in world sport.  I’m amazed we see so few failures of this nature, but by any reasonable expectation, failures like Bury and Bolton should be more common than they are.

There are those in the game who think ‘the model’ of English football is broken.  I have been reading the tea leaves of English football finances for decades.  The model looked broken before Financial Fair Play brought a correction to the market, but we will need to see a lot more Bolton and Burys fall down before that theory stands up.

The Championship in England is one of the top 5 leagues in Europe – but I see that the mineshafters are in full cry.

  2. A signing is a signing.

Going to reserve my judgment until i have seen the boy 3 or 4 times at least.

Lennon is doing his best to get the right men in.

We have to give the whole turnover from the rats team time.

I will fully support the manager no matter what happens this week.

Things might go a lot better than some think in the next two games.

[ a couple of easy wins]?

    Now that would be nice

Peter Taylor: My Journey Through the Troubles

In a uniquely personal journey on the 50th anniversary of the deployment of British troops in August 1969, reporter Peter Taylor reflects on almost a half century of covering the Northern Ireland conflict.

The programme is a deeply personal and intimately frank first person account through the tragedy of war and the triumphs of the peace from a reporter whose own story has become inseparable from the story of the Troubles.

  5. CELTIC40ME @ 6:29 PM,

That’s a very cynical way of looking at it.

You can see quite clearly from that link, and it’s an official statement that Celtic issued, that when Lee Congerton was brought in there was a clear recruitment agenda.

It states – Quality players!! He knew the kind of players BR was looking for. Scouting domestically and Internationally to procure them.

Now, Lee was obviously a Brendan recruit. Peter at that time seemed to have relatively little say in the football department. Dermot Desmond brought BR in.

Yet obviously our CEO would be setting parameters and signing the deals off. Again, this is a matter of record.

It was how things were working then.

If we try to take a bit of emotion out of it and say after the OE signing PL managed to wrest control again (after quite a vicious dog fight) and it was his and not Brendan Rodgers’ strategy that was followed from then til now.

We can now judge both approaches on their merits.

There is far too much nonsense.

The post yesterday criticising Brendan Rodgers for not bringing in John McGinn in 2015 and not keeping Efe Ambrose.

    Today :-

Bringing in a loanee Right Back as a plaster, like we did in January may well work out, I hope it does. It’ too late for the UCL and might be short domestically.

    It’s rank amateur isn’t it?

    Hail Hail

  6. Well done Bolton. Saved from liquidation.

No one wants to see a football club liquidated.

    Except rangers of course.

    Hopefully sevco will follow soon.

No other club playing out of ibrox.

    Please!

Scotland will be a better country for all.

  7. Ibrox latest – statement :

RANGERS has today informed UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body that the Club will not be requesting tickets for its next European away match.

The Club now faces an additional UEFA charge of racist behaviour for sectarian singing during the first leg of our Europa League play–off tie against Legia Warsaw last Thursday evening. We are liaising with UEFA in relation to this second charge.

Thought Peter Taylor’s : My Journey Through the Troubles was the best documentation of this piece of history that I have watched. It’s in-depth, pull-no-pinches and deeply personal overview coupled with first hand interviews over the decades with key participants was truly emotional and heartrending . Award winning programme surely

I’m over it enough to watch this week…could not handle the first leg.

  15. I went looking for the statement and found If your search on Google chrome for a statement regarding sevco in the last hour (using tools) you’ll see a newspaper that no-one buys in Liverpool released a squirrel about gerard being engurland manager one day at the EXACT same minute as the statement story. That’s some of the worst deflection you could see. Absolutely horrific, nowhere near as bad as the offences but bad. What does FF say? “It’s Pl fault”, “they are trying stop out revenues” and they are blaming their board. No condemnation on how the behavior is wrong but the penny has dropped with a few but only because their pennies are dropping by the minute.

I watched it for a 2nd time today, because first time round I was recalling what I remembered from growing up, what was seen on the tv, what was live, what was reported. Young me only had one viewpoint. One side.

Always with a thought that things were done in retalation, and always justified.

Much of it was, but also much of it was sectarian murders, state sponsored murders, and collusion.

Older me watching with the passage of time, a family of my own, and having recently been to ireland, god forbid that the unravelling of English main stream politics could lead to any return to that level of violence.

One of the greatest and certainly one of my favourite Irish songs, but not an easy one to sing it has to be said. Unless you are a Dubliner that is.

  19. So if Rangers qualify tommorow and pull out Arsenal, Man utd, Lazio or Roma …they will not be requesting tickets?.

Lets see if they behave themselves tommorow night at castle greyskull.

Perhaps a ‘behind closed doors’ fixture might be on the cards.

UEFA are at last standing up to their sectarian bile.

“Celtic overpayment for Luca Connell saves Bolton from liquidation”

Dave King immediately called up Peter Lawwell offering him the pick his best talent, from his state of the art youth aclumpany.

  22. “By supporting Rangers in the correct way, the rest of us must strive to protect our great club. One way or another this offensive behaviour must end and it would be much more preferable if we stopped it ourselves, simply by behaving like true Rangers fans.”

But surely the whole purpose of having been a Rangers fan from the 1920’s was to express sectarian and anti-Irish views?

  23. SPL just announced new points system , that evertime Our Rangers get attacked by UEFA we will give them 3 league points as compensation.

no more ridiculous that giving them some other clubs history.

  27. Definite change of tone in recent statements from our friends down Govan way where UEFA are concerned. They must be having a great deal of pressure put on them – contrast that with inflammatory and confrontational approach with SFA……

  28. DD – just got this back from my son-in-law who’s been a season ticket holder for over 10 years

“Bauer is great think he will be a really good signing for you. He’s too good for stoke that’s why they got rid of him. Thinks he’s had enough of being treated like s**t in a crap run club that’s the problem “

  29. Bauer seems on first sight to be a text book Celtic signing – a guy that has played at a high level but has seen his career regress, though, still young enough to kick on and go again. Very much a Sinclair or a Sutton type imo.

The next two games will be decided by how well we cope with the early high intensity press.

  31. A wee prediction.

there will be some sort of trouble from the legia fans at ibrox tomorrow night.

being right up there on the mentalist scale and ultra catholic with a wee sprinkle of nationalism , they wont be shrinking violets.

the bretheren will have some grumble of anti catholic songs, but it will be muted, not full voiced,

they will still get done again.

    next up sunday.

they will sing something racist/sectarian, but the media microphones will be focused on the brave 800 in the corner, and anything interpreted as irish, catholic, celtic supporting will be used to justify “one is as bad as the other”.

i really do think we should stop taking tickets,

    the huns created the problem.

lastly, one of our players will get hit by soemthing from the crowd, or one of the crowd will be pitchside.

    mystic hig has spoken.
