BYE BYE BERNABEI – AT LAST

ALEXANDRO BERNABEI’S long-anticipated move to Brazilian club SC Internacional has been sealed – at last.

There was clearly no future for the £3.75million misfit after Brendan Rodgers jettisoned the left-back in March to go on a season-long loan to the Porto Allegre club.

The temporary transfer expired on Christmas Eve and both clubs have been locked in negotiations to make the switch permanent before the Brazil league recommences on March 29.

No official fee has been announced, but a figure of around £4million would have been acceptable to the champions to cover the cost of their initial outlay to Argentinian top-flight side Lanus in July 2022, a rare transfer backfire from Ange Postecoglou.

The 24-year-old defender’s new team confirmed the move in a club statement: “Sport Club Internacional reports that it has concluded negotiations with Celtic Football Club for the definitive hiring of left-back Alexandro Bernabei.

“The athlete, who stood out in the 2024 season, signed a contract valid until December 2028.”

Bernabei, who scored three goals in 23 league games for the South Americans, added: “I’m very happy here, my family too. I want to continue doing my best to help Inter achieve great results.

“I know the size and weight of wearing this shirt. Now, it’s time to continue looking for the best achievements together with my teammates and our fans.”

Before the deal was rubber-stamped, Internacional’s vice-president Jose Olavo Bisol admitted: “It’s a complex negotiation.
“It’s not just about the price, which is also complex from a financial point of view for the club, but also about the relationships, the parties involved.
“There’s a club, there’s an agent, there’s negotiation time.”
Bernabei still had two and a half years to run on his Celtic contract with no chance of game time under Rodgers, so a transfer is the ideal solution.
