CALDWELL’S WIGAN, SCORING GOALS AND WINNING MATCHES

GARY CALDWELL continues to impress in his managerial career south of the border as his Wigan side now sit on the verge of winning promotion.
Caldwell, who has entered the betting as a dark horse for the vacant Celtic job, praised his Wigan players after their 4-1 win over Southend just about secured promotion to the Championship.
The former Celtic defender knows that only a catastrophic collapse can prevent his side from going up with only two games to play.
He said: “I asked for a big performance from the players after the last two games and we got one.
“I thought we were back to our best; we played on the front foot and were aggressive. We could have scored more goals and really showed why we were up there at the top of the league.

“Recently, questions were asked and we were under pressure, but we came out with a fantastic attitude and really took the game to Southend.

“We have got great spirit, great desire and great work ethic and they are all of the values you need to be successful. And we have fantastic quality as well and to play the way we do at times, it is an absolute joy to watch.
“Some of our play and the goals as well were exceptional and wouldn’t have looked out of place in the Premier League.”

Caldwell, though, is refusing to take anything for granted.

He added: “I said to the players that we haven’t achieved anything yet and we won’t look at the league table until May 8.
“We go to Blackpool next week and we need a similar performance in front of a massive backing to push us on and, hopefully, we’ll give the fans a day out to remember.”
Whether any interest from Celtic would tempt Caldwell away from developing his Wigan side further remains to be seen. Caldwell is available at odds ranging from 20/1 to 33/1 to become the next manager of Celtic.
