Callum McGregor, Celtic’s fittest ever player

212

Whatever doubts existed about the first team squad, we all knew there was no chance of Callum McGregor leaving.  This morning, Celtic announced the captain has signed a five-year contract which will keep him at the club until he turns 35.  It is likely to be his last in the game and will be structured to see him adopt coaching responsibilities towards the latter end of the deal.

We have spoken recently about the value of increasing the velocity of churn in the squad.  Two years was more than enough time to enjoy the delights of Jota, before turning him into a pile of cash we can go shopping with.  But there is a problem with a revolving door strategy.  You need people who can educate new arrivals in what is expected from them and how to deal with life in a new city.

In times when even the manager moves on after a couple of years, Callum McGregor fulfils that role for Celtic.  His is fundamental to the success of the club.  Although James Forrest seldom plays, his presence at Lennoxtown is also invaluable.

We have seen a few great central midfielders over the last couple of decades: Lambert, Lennon, Keane, Brown, to name a few.  They all lose their effectiveness on the park while still at the peak of their powers in the dressing room.  I don’t recall any of them being truly great approaching 35-years-old.  Callum, however, is a unique football player.  He is the fittest who has ever played for the club.

There are 15 domestic trophies to compete for before this contract ends.  I don’t doubt he can collect winners medals for the majority of them.

  5. We played a team in a European game, the team Elyounousi played for when he gave us a roasting.Their Captain that night was 38.

  6. Sick of hearing comments like STEBHOYS earlier that Greg Taylor needs replaced.” He does not have the physicality,”.Do you really think that or just sticking to the same dross that used to get spoken, simply because the player was not KT.No one puts in more effort, including Calmac, than Taylor bombing up and down the left side, tirelessly every game.Unless its Andy Robertson, think I will stick with Greg,as I am sure that know nothing Brendan will, and that other idiot Ange did.

  7. Calum is hardly likely to call time on a Scotland career when we are in a good position to qualify for the Euros in Germany next summer. Not to mention that he is part of a midfield under Stevie Clarke, (Robertson-McGinn-McTominey-Mcgregor) that is currently more effective than ours. Our young Norwegian signing may improve us there.

Good shout, just caught it on BBCi. The ‘Nine’ is the best news-magazine programme in Scotland, does not appear to share the anti Celtic stance of BBC Scotland Sport, so a good platform for Paul Brennan to share his views. Paul did well there, spoke up well for us, for Calum, and indeed for Ange down at Spurs. Ange did well too at his first press conference, spoke well of us, gave Brendan a mention, good luck to Spurs next season.

  9. It has long been part of the Scottish psyche to feel inferior. Consequently, players such as Greg Taylor will be judged much more harshly than would an equivalent German, Belgian etc.

Even Calmac, who is quite highly rated by most Celtic supporters, is not rated highly enough.

  13. Hi Everyone on this Great site.

We knew it was coming but it was still very hard.

My Dad passed away @ 18:40 yesterday.

His favourite player was wee Jinky, He loved all the players, especially Big Billy, it’s hard to tell what he loved the most though, Celtic or Ornithology.

He’d take all his kids, and latterly his Grandkids on long walks, in my case bird watching but my Big Sisters wurnae that interested in Bird watching. Going by the timelines He’d take me 20 mile walks.

He helped run the McCafferty’s bus next to @ Dumbarton railway station way Bach.

I think everyone knows computer games are young peoples games, ma wee bro, who is over frae Switzerland said, as I said I keep getting beat @ Fifa, that I’ll start winning now he’s home with his Lord & Saviour. It made me smile.

    Gonnae Miss ye Dad.

If you are a betting person, I’d get money on Celtic winning a Euro trophy this upcoming Season. Arthur was very religious and went to St Pats constantly even when most of the family wurnae.

Njoi the Best seat in the House Dad as the Hoops take on Europes finest.

Oh and BTW thank you Danny/MWD for making it possible that me ma Son and Dad got to witness Celtic Together. Thank You.
