Callum McGregor’s five mountains in five weeks

227

If results go their way, Scotland will tonight become the first team to qualify for the Euro 2024 in Germany next summer.  Norway and Georgia are both on four points.  A draw would see them move to five, 10 behind Scotland with three games remaining.

Either way, automatic qualification is inevitable, as, with Spain remaining on both their rosters, neither of the sides who meet in Oslo tonight are likely to reach 15 points.  Post-Scott Brown, James Forrest, Ryan Christie, Kieran Tierney and Stuart Armstrong, our exposure to Scotland games it limited to Callum McGregor.  It is some comfort he will be excused play-off games in the spring.

In the next five weeks, however, Callum is likely to face England, Feyenoord, Lazio, Spain and France, five exhausting matches, with four other Celtic games thrown into the mix.  We need him fresh and at his best for Rotterdam and the visit of the Romans.

With so much of the squad wilting, the role of the captain cannot be overestimated.  He should be rested whenever a safe goal margin permits.

  1. It’s a really tough one Re the pricing and what is fair.

Gone are the days of kids getting a lift in.

The flip side is kids today would not be happy stood at the front with the rubbish view like we did etc. Back in our day a cotton hopped shirt lasted 4 or 5 years and now a new kit is expected every year.

New fans are treated as consumers and so old guys like me maybe need to get less frustrated when they behave as expectant consumers and boo and shout at the team when the going us tough on the field.

The fan / club / team relationship is a curious one.

I see Feyenoord are charging those lucky enough to get tickets £58 or so. I do hope I am one of them.

  2. DENIABHOY

You hadme confused there until the penny dropped.

    👍

Aye that rule is in place to stop clubs using contract termination as a means to continue transferring unwanted players after the close of the window.

  3. Sure we need to manage and rotate Calum’s appearances but who does the geeing up and talking when he’s not playing? CCV got the deputy slot last year – tho not exactly the vocal type. Joe a better stand-in Capn?

Not sure how Reo or Tommo’s huddle talks would translate either…

Peculiar that we only have Philips loaned til January…are we allowed to bring Maik back in for Euro ties if Nat’s loan ends?

Shame there’s no room in the squad for the Korean Liam Shaw or the Aussie Lewis Morgan.

  4. Scotland on the verge of automatic qualification for EURO24 in Germany and people calling for Callum McGregor to retire from international football.

    Aye right.

Sorry was rescuing my Grand Son from the ball swamp in Lollipop land.

Not sure but think children’s prices are a separate argument, which you clearly feel strongly about.

FWIW my own CL package lately has been given to a supporter that lives in England and doesn’t have a regular season ticket for domestic games.

I’ve no idea if any other big European club has ‘ bhoys gate ‘ prices, even if there are I wouldn’t be beating up on Celtic, for charging box office prices.

Callum shouldn’t be playing tonight in a meaningless friendly after being played for 90+ minutes on Friday.

That would be a start. After all, we pay his wages and “lend” him to the SFA.

  8. Saint Stivs

To be fair to Mark Hately, he might be thick and have no insight, but with a very few exceptions, he comes from a long line of mainly former players, in Scotland as well as England who have zero insight or anything remotely interesting to say. I really can’t stand to listen to Shearer, have a listen some time he has never, ever in the history of Match of the Day ever said anything which an average punter like me could have said. It’s TV for God sake, unless you have sight issues we can all see what he is describing to us. That’s not punditry it’s just audio description! As for Peter Grant, dearie me, he never shuts up on Celtic TV, did you know he once coached Matt O’Reilly?

    Rant over…

  9. When Celtic qualify for the CL .

Do our youth teams still play in an equivalent CL group event ?

I find Cricket and Rugby commentators /co-commentators informative, balanced and amusing.

I find the football equivalents obvious, biased and dull.

I would guess that the football fellas are paid far more than the cricket and rugby guys.

    Funny ol` world.

  12. garygillespieshamstring on

Can we assume that an extra keeper can be added in an emergency in the event of an injury to one of the other two?

  13. Hot Smoked

Agreed I don’t watch/listen to cricket but the rugby co commentators are night and day from the football ones and yes, I doubt they are paid anything as much as the football ones. The rugby ones in particular, I’m sure it’s the same in cricket, have insight and also knowledge of both the rules and information on players, their coaches etc. in football we have so called experts not understanding even the most basic laws of the game. The most blatant is the one about not flagging for offside until the play has ended. They seem unable to comprehend this! For example if a linesman flags a player offside and the play stops and from replays, they were in fact onside and were denied a goal it’s a disaster. However, if they wait until this particular sequence of play has ended if they score and VAR checks that it’s a goal, result. I heard a so called expert call this out again on co commentary at an international game this week,

‘why doesn’t the linesman just flag him offside?’ How stupid can they be?

  14. Man Utd are selling tickets for their opening CL match against Galatasary for £295 per ticket.

The price for OAP and under 16s ? £295.

Utd’s price for the Munich game starts at £400 and goes up to £600.

Granted these are general sale prices but the pricing is extraordinary. Celtic for me are very reasonable by comparison.

Can we assume that an extra keeper can be added in an emergency in the event of an injury to one of the other two?

GARY, made me wonder what the hell is wrong with Seigrist? No harm to Bain but he’s hardly inspiring so is there a problem with Seigrist or is it injury again?

  16. I dont agree with the price comparisons between Celtic and the other richer funded clubs.

My concern is there will be Celtic supporting families who will be priced out of attending the games together.

Others will get the tickets regardless and make a sacrifice somewhere else.

    More than a club ?

“He should be rested whenever a safe goal margin permits”

Maybe cc the Scotland coach into this piece of wisdom?

From memory he plays Calum to the bitter end almost all the time.

Better still pull him from meaningless friendlies.

He plays at (in terms of athletic output) the highest level in world football … the Champions League.

Give some additional experience to these English Championship types.

  19. Ticket pricing can be very difficult to form genuine comparison.

Have a look at Liverpool’s pricing for their Europa campaign at Anfield.

In particular look at the pricing for juniors and Young adults

I am aware that this is not the CL, but it seems they are conscious of their future fanbase.

Our ticket pricing seems priced to ensure our Young fans will be priced out and will watch the games on the box or on tablets.

All the best to you both Gene

    ____

He is in the squad. Played the full game today for Portugal under 21s. Kyogo also played the full match and Daizen came on as a sub. Hopefully all are injury free as well as Callum tonight.

  21. GREENPINATA on 12TH SEPTEMBER 2023 5:33 PM

really interesting on liverpool pricing structure.

loyalty to their fans by not pricing them out.

they had a huge kickback when the expanded main stand opened and priced at huge uplift, so they brought it back down.

at least they get that right.

£4 to take your kid to a europa tie, quite excellent.

Then Liverpool’s pricing is quite excellent.

    Hmmm

    Hmmm

  23. I do however reserve the right to say oh look they do it much better, we should treat our family supporters like Liverpool do.

  24. Pity Kyogo didn’t get one of Japan’s 4 goals, hope he had a good game and his coach doesn’t say he’s had his chance.

Alternative perspective, if he was mince we don’t lose him in January for the Asian Cup 😜

‘More than a club’ is just a cliche, try phoning them and telling them you’re in the ‘more than a club called Celtic’ and you’re down to your next foodbank handout or even that you’re short on your last instalment for your brief.

It’s all strictly business, write to them and tell them their prices are too high and you’ll soon see it’s just another football club.
