CALMAC IN RODGERS LINK

BRENDAN RODGERS will make a record-equalling £25million bid for Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor, according to media reports.

The former Hoops boss, who quit for Leicester City almost a year ago, is preparing a second move for the Scotland international after failing with an enquiry last summer.

In November last year, McGregor agreed a lucrative extension to his contract at the eight-in-a-row champions that will run to June 2024.

However, Rodgers, an admitted admirer of the 26-year-old Scotland international, is ready to make a renewed offer for the anchorman.

The Midlands gaffer, who saw his side lose 1-0 at home to Manchester City last night, is already looking ahead to the possibility of losing James Maddison to Manchester United.

The Old Trafford side paid £80million to sign Leicester’s England international centre-back Harry Maguire last summer and they are reported to be willing to match that fee for the team’s playmaker.

Marathon Man McGregor may captain the champions against Kilmarnock today with skipper Scott Brown struggling to overcome the calf injury he sustained after limping off near the end of the 1-1 draw with FC Copenhagen in the Europa League last-32 encounter in the Danish capital on Thursday night.

It is highly unlikely Rodgers will be offered any encouragement by the Hoops in any pursuit of one of Neil Lennon’s key components – even if he is willing to equal the £25million deal which saw Kieran Tierney leave for Arsenal in August last year.
