CELTIC’S interest in the Champions League ended abruptly at the first hurdle when they failed to score a goal in three and a half hours against Kazakhstan minnows of Kairat Almaty.
Brendan Rodgers watched as his side fired blanks home and away and then failed to convert three penalty-kicks in the spot-kick shoot-out.
Adam Idah, Luke McCowan and Daizen Maeda were the culprits as the Hoops collapsed to an embarrassing exit.
Reflecting on two dismal showings against a team that were thrashed in seven of their eight games in league format of Europe’s premier tournament, McGregor said: “We should have been, and could’ve been, a Champions League club this year.

“We missed out on penalties. We had five chances in extra-time to score over there against Kairat Almaty and we didn’t.
“It’s not to say we’re not a Champions League club any more.
“We just have to aim to be as good as we can be in every area.”
McGregor, speaking to the Scottish Sun, added: “Can we sign the best players that we can in each position?
“But as long as the model at the club looks like they’re pushing in the right direction, then you have to allow for football mistakes to happen.
“It’s the drive and the force behind it — can we be as good as we can be?
“Ultimately, then everybody will say we want to be a Champions League club.”
