CALMAC UP FOR THE CUP

CALLUM McGREGOR, missing from action during Celtic’s 3-0 win at Motherwell yesterday, will be up for the Cup.

That’s the hope of manager Brendan Rodgers as he prepares for the visit of Dundee in the Premiership on Wednesday and Saturday’s 5.30pm kick-off against Aberdeen in the Premier Sports League Cup semi-final at Hampden.

The Hoops gaffer took no risks with the team’s inspirational skipper on a sodden surface at Fir Park as rain lashed down.

Rodgers gave Luke McCowan his first start and the £1million bargain buy from the Dens Park club on deadline day repaid the boss’ faith by rifling in the opening goal in an impressive overall performance.

Paulo Bernardo also started alongside Reo Hatate and £11million man Arne Engels was introduced for McCowan in the 75th minute.

UP AND AT ‘EM…Luke McCowan is flying high as he challenges Motherwell’s Ewan Wilson during the midfielder’s impressive first start at Fir Park.

Answering questions about McGregor’s no show on this occasion, Rodgers, speaking to the Daily Record, said: “It shouldn’t be too serious.

“I got the call late last [Saturday] night and, normally with Callum, the number of games he’s played over the years, I think it was really sensible, as well.

“It was really mature, because maybe before he might not have mentioned anything, but he had a wee feeling after the training session yesterday.

“I got to find out and we said let’s see how he is in the morning. So, rather than take any risk with it, it’s his abductor, it only takes a stretch on it and then be out for a number of weeks.

“Hopefully, he’ll be fine over these next few days, and if not Wednesday, then hopefully he should be fine for next weekend.”
