Campaign of Deflection puts Celtic in perilous situation

242

Tim Williamson is Celtic’s Head of Physiotherapy and Medical Services, but in football he is more famous for an incident in the 1990s, when he was Partick Thistle’s physio.  Thistle player Colin McGlashan took a head knock, Tim treated McGlashan and told manager, John Lambie, that the player didn’t know who he was.  Lambie shouted back, “Tell him he’s Maradona and get him back on”.  [Commonly misquoted as “Tell him he’s Pele”].

The joke works because everyone knows that if an individual is full of confidence, they will do better.  The opposite is also true.  Tell them they are a Honda Civic and are competing against Ferraris and they’ll win nothing.  John Lambie knew this, good school teachers know this and good parents know this.  Leadership is hard, but telling people you have faith in them is the easy part.

Dundee, Hibernian, Kairat, Braga and Newco are not Ferraris.  We outspend, out-pay and out-sport-science all of them.  Dundee were 11th before yesterday.  Braga are 8th in Portugal – and have not won a league game since 17 August.  By any measure, these clubs are minnows.

Dundee deserved their win and could have scored more.  They knew their tasks, fought for their manager and wiped the floor with a team who looked like they had been told they were nothing more than Honda Civics.

It is impossible to win the league with that narrative and crucially, not everyone realises this.  We are in a perilous situation and as long as the Campaign of Deflection is waged, it will get worse.

  1. I’ve got a bright red Ferrari baseball cap. Wouldn’t want a car with all the poxy cycle lanes.

How about decking our team out in nice bright Ferrari caps and tell them they are now elite.

    Simples.

Why should I support Brugge ?

    Celtic are my team.

Sadly in terms of structure and true way we play we have regressed massively since Ange left. No idea if you ever go to watch Celtic but I have never enjoyed found to the football as much as the 2 Ange seasons. Aside from the GB dirges. 2 amazing seasons against a strong domestic rival who got to a Euro final. We won 5/6 trophies playing with style and confidence.

The past 2 years against a financially challenged and messed up rangers we limped along. Thrashed in Europe in first season and we got lucky with the draw and new format in season 2. Still never made the last 16 though. We won 4 trophies but nowhere near the enjoyment. Our rivals capitulated and even lost to Queens Park. Although curiously not to us over 90 minute in the past 14 months.

Our manager inherited some amazing great signings. Maeda MOR AJ CCV Kyogo Abada Hatate. We had made even more in Ange time. The previous recruitment team bought Khun and since then the talent and potential recruitment has dried up. We have spent big but got no return indeed we are on for some big losses. Idah Trusty Engels plus this season.

The club was doing well and since BR came is going backwards.

I blame the owner for a knee jerk and badly thought through decision. I blame the manager for most of it as he has managed for him and not the club. The ceo maybe out of his depth and perhaps PL could have engaged and sought to help fix. He has kept away.

It’s about 2 main in the main for me. Their standoff is destroying what we have enjoyed for 25 years.

  3. B78 …Rodgers referenced the guy from ajax for 6 million euro !!!….( our price might have been 10 though) …it doesn’t Really matter because A we wouldn’t buy early and B we wouldn’t pay that much !!!!!….

On the evening of 1st September I could have written this script, anyone that knows how football works knows players, managers, support, the whole club gets a lift from new signings the opposite is also true when you are scraping a barrel at the last minute

In fact I think I could have written this script when Lawwell junior was shown the door !!!!!…..If it was BRs doing ( and it probably was ) then no way was BR going to get the quality he wanted …no way ..

John Maguire of Phoenix Honda I recall ?

  5. Team selection forThursday :

    Kasper

    Johnston CCV Tierney

    Engels. Bernardo. Calum MCGowan Uruguayan

    Nygren

    Kelche

I’d line up 3-5-2 with Ben supporting the big fella , our pressing is poor at the moment, let the opposition have the ball and hit on the break. We need to stop conceding.

The writing’s on the wall. This team is done. All that’s left is the blame game.

If you think Rodgers is the main culprit here i’ve got a bridge to sell you.

However, he is making a bad situation worse by stubbornly playing a system he doesn’t have the players for. The Honda Civic comment is a calamity too.

If he loses the next 2 matches (which in all likelihood he will), he has to go. Mutual him out the door.

But be in no doubt, this Board has created the conditions for his failure.

  8. Its hard not to come to the conclusion BR is trying to engineer his own demise to control the narrative.if had his way the club would have been flying ……………His ego remains unpunctured,

yesterdays remarks reminded me of we this grenade that led to his departure first tome around “We’ve got a million wingers, we don’t need another one

i just dont understand why he came back

Totally agree re the main culprit but the manager has been given a fairly easy ride until now.

Imagine a manager that’s only competed in two leagues and won them both, getting an easy ride.

  11. Back in the day car promotions were usually accompanied by models posing sometimes alongside say footballers if the motor manufacturer or their distributors were involved in sponsoring a football club, or a national team (think Ally MacLeod and carpets type of thing). I’m sure Celtic have been involved in these type of promotions going back over decades and I am even more sure that Honda were one of them (not so sure about Ferrari though) but I can’t quite find the evidence to back it up (the claim not the motor). Anybody out there got any evidence either way?

If most can now see it’s only going to get worse then it’s incumbent on those in charge to rectify their mistake asap.

    *******************

    Correct….Retire.

  13. So BR gets the sack or leaves, we get an interim manager in and we can all guess who that will be, nothing of note will be done in January with an interim in charge and the Board remains intact, in structure and personnel with the Yes men NEDs with a football club funding a plc, if this happens how will this change the outlook for Celtic FC?

  14. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I struggle to think of many players that have improved under Brendan Rodgers MK2 – including the players he signed.

He got Matt O’Riley scoring goals – but even then, Matt was an established talent who had already found his way to Celtic via a road less travelled.

Maeda?, Kuhn? – mibbes aye, mibes naw – but both seem(ed) pretty desperate to leave.

Brendan Rodgers is living off past glories – he is a yesterday man. His next gig will be in the MLS, Saudi Arabia or China for a big pay day – either that or they will be adding a fourth sunbed to that advert with Allardyce, Pardew and Redknapp ignoring the phone.

Totally understand the comment but we are living in the here and now and has failed every big test he has faced in the last few months and is unwilling or unable to rectify it.

Still banging the same drum despite being embarrassed off and on the pitch yesterday.

    Keep fiddling while Rome burns👍

  17. The Club requires a reset and a full on focus for its reason for being in existance, for Celtic FC to be the best it can be in all competitions, forget world class that is unachievable playing in Scotland, with everything at the club being geared to providing the necessary funding to achieve those outcomes. If this isn’t the case and continue to put the plc first we are done for.

  18. Sorry Paul you clearly have waited a long time for an article of such bile. We are not playing well but we will come back . I know it and every poster on this blog, including you, knows that as well.Complacency, a hun word like WATP.

If our trophy wins are down to that then I’ll have it all the time.

As I said the article was poor fare.

  19. Dessybhoy- we have reached an impasse, board want rid of the manager, manager going nowhere of his own accord. Controlled demolition of good squad, all to suit the bank balance. The only way out as far as I can see is for Brendan to change tactics and formation now,try 3-5-2,with 2 upfront even though we would struggle to field 2 strikers, maybe Nygren off Iheanacho, has a decent scoring record….get Yamada and Inamura integrated into the squad, they can’t do any worse than we are currently watching.

  20. Bada

Changing Managers without any change in approach outlook and personnel at Board level is kicking the can down the road. I dont think we have goals in this team maybe a system tweak will help we cannot keep doing what we are that’s for certain.

  21. It’s quite amazing how some folks just can’t or won’t accept how the recruitment works at the club, it’s been spelt out numerous times by those in charge so I won’t bother saying it again.

BR has the final say accepted, but when it’s a choice that’s maybes 4-5-6 what’s he supposed to do, I recall years back watching him on Sky with Kris Kamara and another bloke one Sunday morning not long after he left Liverpool and they were discussing the transfer situ at the Pool, the committee, they were talking about Mario Ballotelli and BR told them that he didn’t want him, but he was over ruled and the bold Mario was signed, the point being that BR told Kamara that even tho he didn’t want MB any player was better than no player.

It’s obvious that Celtic have some sort of committee that sign the players, it’s been said publicly and because BR accepts them he gets all the flack, two Japanese players spring to mind, the young fella from Man City is another, so all this bollix about BR and his chosen scout to blame is just that, Bollix.

Now I don’t agree with how BR is going about things, ego’s are terrible things, he needs to get a grip and get back to what he is good at.

  22. Nothing will happen this week. So, maybe we need to take a breath and shout and support as much as we can this Thursday and Sunday (for those who have a ticket).

We can only hope that BR somehow wins the players back with a very contrite apology (ok, I’m not holding my breath either) at today’s training. And somehow CalMac can get the bhoys up for the two big games. We are Celtic. We have been in a mess before and the spirit of the club pulls us through when everyone writes us off.

If BR learns from this, shows some modesty, rolls up his sleeves and turns things around great. Not much value in calling for a change until we see how this week goes.

It also needs the players to step up and put easy and half chances in the net. We can’t blame BR or the board for everything…

  23. But one thing we should all be demanding is no more self-seeking stunts by the Collective or GB or whoever they are. The players need this kind of distraction like a hole in the head.

  24. Quadrophenian – Good post my friend. I thought the same thing when I heard this yesterday, but couldn’t be arsed putting that view out here. There’s so many people looking to force the second best coach we have ever had out of the club. People who are not aware of our history, both near and far, and who feel a poor start to the campaign signals a need to gut the club from top to bottom.

I’m not happy with the playing squad we have at the moment, and I don’t profess to know who’s fault this is, but I do know that I want Brendan to stay here for as long as possible.

  25. don’t think we have the pace or the defenders with the positional sense to play with 3 at the back , we are poor enough playing with 4

  26. Amazing that the Boardelllos can lose the ability to understand English, including Paul, chief bouncer at the Boardello club.BR never called the player,”Hondas”. Carry on being deliberately obtuse,we are used too it by now,God knows we hear Trump often enough. The master.

Like a wee brass section on CQN,Paul conducts, and the” Trumpettes” give it big licks.
