Can Celtic Catch Hearts and Reignite Their Title Challenge?

0

Celtic began the 2025/26 Premiership season aiming to defend their crown. They started the new campaign as reigning champions and were rightfully installed as favourites to collect yet another title. However, things haven’t gone to plan for the Bhoys so far, and what makes it worse for them is that Hearts are enjoying an excellent season.

As things stand, Celtic are in second behind Hearts, with the latter having a seven-point lead. That lead could, and should, be cut down to just four points, as Celtic do retain a game in hand. The situation isn’t desperate yet, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

Resting On Their Laurels And Manager Upheaval

As mentioned, a check of football odds online at the start of the season revealed Celtic were the clear favourites to win another Premiership title. It’s what you’d expect to see, due to how strong Celtic have been in recent years. However, because of their ability to win titles and to keep Rangers and other sides at bay, did the club rest on its laurels and just think it’d be another walk in the park?

The season started with Brendan Rodgers in the dugout, a man who has brought unbelievable success to the club across two stints in charge. But following a disappointing start to the campaign, he resigned as manager, with former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill arriving in the interim, who continues to suggest he doesn’t want the job permanently. The lack of certainty surrounding the managerial post, even though the team are winning in the main, could become an issue.

Making The Right Appointment

The great thing about having a steady hand on the tiller in the interim is that it gives the Celtic hierarchy a chance to make a proper decision on a long-term managerial appointment. The club can do its due diligence and choose the right man for the job, rather than being rushed into a quick appointment that could ultimately backfire.

However, making the right appointment and doing so before the January transfer window is going to be crucial. The club and players need to know who will be in charge and how they want to work, as well as there being an opportunity to recruit specifically for the new man in the dugout in the coming weeks.

January Could Change Everything

By the time the January transfer window comes around, Celtic could have already reclaimed top spot in the Premiership. Or, Hearts could still be leading the way, with the Bhoys still having ground to make up.

This is where the January transfer window could change everything. Celtic remain the biggest draw in Scottish football. With a permanent manager in place, they will enter the market able to attract players who not only suit the new manager’s style but also bring in players who may be unobtainable for other outfits, which could make all the difference.

Final Thoughts

A disappointing start to the 2025/26 season isn’t fatal for Celtic at this point. They may trail Hearts, but they have a game in hand, they’re winning games under Martin O’Neill, a new manager is expected soon, and the January transfer window is on the horizon. There’s still work to do, but this season is far from over.
