Can we push SPL fan power one step further?

Tomorrow’s Annual General Meeting of the Scottish Premier League is set to be the third great football meeting in the last two weeks.  The Prophet of Armageddon, chief executive Neil Doncaster, will face his shareholders and either have to declare he was being truthful when he told them, and Scottish Football League clubs, the SPL would be unable to fulfil their contractual obligations if Sevco were denied a place in the First Division, or that this was a cunning ruse designed to manipulate clubs and fans alike.

Doncaster was surely encouraged by some in the SPL to adopt his confrontational stance but support from SPL clubs was certainly not universal.  No representatives from Celtic participated in any meetings or conversations regarding the contents of the presentation made to SFL clubs, nor was the club informed or consulted on it.

Well done to the Aberdeen fans who kicked off the Sell-out Saturday initiative.  They hope to sell-out Pittodrie for their 11 August game and want to as many fans as possible to buy season tickets.  The idea has been picked up by clubs throughout the league.

I get the feeling that if supporters groups got together we could use this unique moment, when camaraderie among fans coincided with unparalleled fan power over the clubs, to define a framework for the game we wanted, not something a dreamt up by a Norfolk MBA.

Even if we couldn’t get every fan group pulling in the same direction, a few productive bilateral relationships is all it takes to establish an powerful pressure group.

    Kojo, kind of you to ask.

     

     

    By all accounts she is doing extremely well in her first year as a junior doctor.

     

     

    She moves to Glasgow Royal Infirmary at the beginning of next month starting off in A&E for four months so that should tax her.

     

     

    She arrived home from Sharm El Sheikh early this a.m. Not a cloud in the sky throughout their time there. It’s a hard old life:o)

    Afternoon Celts, I’ve been watching the Tour of France last few hours and it was excellent but spoiled by some loon tune trying to spoil the race at the top of the highest climb, very hunnish is that where they go on hols? maybe they’re all staying at a Villa in France?

This deep emotional and financial commitment from supporters which underpins the professional game has made it not only the biggest spectator sport in Scotland but one of substantial cultural and social significance. They also believe that in a relatively small country such as Scotland that new talent can be brought into the structures of the game from outside the existing narrow band of club representatives. This they argue means that supporters

     

    should be directly represented in the decision making processes of the game alongside other excluded but valuable stakeholders. In addition Supporters Direct would like to establish a better dialogue on a number of other important issues, including financial stability, fair play, stadia

     

    facilities and infrastructure, league reconstruction and pricing.

     

    The report, “The Social and Community Value of Football” has significance for the wider game and the changes which might flow from any league reconstruction. Football and Sport Enterprise will be a key idea in transforming many SFL clubs into new innovative community business models.

     

    Football needs to explore the different ways social and community impacts are generated in football. First, we need to understand the integration of the interests of communities in the core business of clubs. Second, to explore how football’s case might be strengthened by a more thorough assessment of the social impact of clubs themselves. Third, there is a need to research

     

    ways in which football operates as a social and cultural business as well as a financial one, within its locality. This is an issue the SFA and the League Structure need to take further. Football and local clubs hold the key to opening up new pathways to more involvement, more diversity and a wider

     

    role in sport and the community. Competitive League Football.”
