Caring about the Celtic reputation

262

I was at a lecture in Glasgow a few years back on certain mental health conditions when the presenter claimed 1% of the population met the criteria for psychopathy.  In a theatre with 700 people, he noted, that meant 7 of us.

My mind immediately did the sum; 1% of 60,000 people: 600!  You would think 600 psychopaths littered through a football stadium would create mania, but it doesn’t work like that.  Even psychopaths learn to moderate their behaviour to conform in most circumstances.  The power of those around them is important.

I was not at Tannadice on Monday and did not hear any of the offensive material I am assured was sung by some in the Celtic support.  This was an issue (although not always viewed as a problem) for decades, before the move the new Celtic Park stopped it.  That hiatus ended in 2011 when we listened to Oldco fans signing their songbook at Hampden, convinced the book would be thrown at them, before hearing then-Justice Secretary, Kenny MacAskill, praise fans for their behaviour.  The floodgates have never been completely closed since.

What matters most is not that you have some who stand among you who are prepared to tarnish your reputation, but how everyone else responds.  If even psychopaths moderate their behaviour, the almost universal condemnation of the behaviour Celtic fans have shown since Monday will help us police ourselves.  All of us who care about Celtic, have a responsibility to raise our voice.

  1. I once saw 600 Psychopaths at the ole Burns Howff. What a waste of time and money that was

Stoke on Trent is made up of 6 towns, Stoke being one and Burslem being another. Port Vale is in Burslem.

  3. SFTB asked:

have any of you ever spoken to a Green Brigader?

I have spoken to several and found all of them to be thoroughly decent, aware and committed young men.

I believe those who are critical of the GB do so under the assumption that ALL in 111 are Green Brigaders. That is not the case. I would ask that those who want to criticise the GB make sure of their facts before so doing.

  4. Robbie Williams is a Vale supporter – lived less than a mile from the ground. He went to St Margaret Ward high school – 2 years above my eldest son.

  5. Yesterday I posted that I was going to bet on James’s Gate in the 5.30 at Cheltenham in memory of my brother James.

Came in 3rd, £5 EW gives £21 – easy this betting lark.

  6. The Green Brigade are not situated in the Jock Stein Stand Upper, sections 444 or445.

But plenty of IRA anthems are belted out there. Embarrassingly, other songs have the ‘add-ons’.

We should also consider that some attending away games may not even bother with home games.

Those singing those bigoted and political songs don’t give a shit about Celtic’s reputation.

If they were called the Green Brigadoon’s, maybe they would only show up every hundred years.🤔😂

    —-

    😂Come home, come home…

  8. The organisation everyone is alluding to up in the 444 area are the bhoys…….black uniform, dodgy ultra relationships across Europe, spray painting and tags and a thing for attacking old people in pubs.

In short, a wee bunch of fannies…..seen often at away games.

    Am I right ?

Correct. I’m in 138 Jock Stein lower and hear the sectarian chanting from the upper tier corner next to North Stand.

    Not the Green Brigade.

  10. If young Dembele isn’t signing a new contract fine, his place could be taken with another young development player,Wouldn’t it be good with dembele being injured a long time this season ,can Celtic not claim compensation.

  11. Jimdom……….to answer your query, the vast majority of young people in Ireland lncluding my own two have no interest in religion but nonetheless are good people. They also enjoy a rousing ballad session and traditional music so long as there is no offence to anyone.

In which section does the drummer sit (or stand) ?

Can we get 3 guys with kazoos next to the drummer?

As soon as any offensive chants start, the four of them can spring into life …

… with Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man !!

It’ll be a slow, loud, dirge on drums and will sound flat as a pancake on kazoo.

Combined with the subsequent groans and laughter ….

… it will drown out the other chant in no time.

On the Rangers terracing on Saturday there was congregated a gang, thousands strong, including the dregs and scourings of filthy slumdom, unwashed yahoos, jailbirds nighthawks, won’t works, burro-barnacles and pavement pirates, all, or nearly all, in the scarecrow stage of verminous trampdom. This ragged army of insanitary pests was lavishly provided with orange and blue remnants…. Practically without cessation, the vagabond scum kept up a strident howl of the “Boyne Water” chorus. Nothing so bestially ignorant has ever been witnessed, even in the wildest exhibitions of Glasgow Orange bigotry…

    From earlier.

I agree, but there is always a but, papering over the cracks, or appeasement doesn’t work, it’s akin to medicine IMO, these days we tend to treat the symptom and not the cause, till this is addressed our grandweans will be arguing about this in the years ahead.

Been doing a massive clear up, we have had a serious Sahara desert storm, the red dust then the rain, what a efin mess, and I mean mess, spent about 6 hours and haven’t even scratched the surface, probably going to have to repaint the place and we only did it five months ago.

  16. Psychopathy or daftness??

Mostly the latter paul67 I think.

Self policing is crucial. Dafties need to be told. Probably need to hear it from people they respect. Alot of us were ‘schooled’ in that by other Celts in our lives. I know I was. If us older guys aren’t handing on what we have learned then we are failing. Wringing our hands and pointing fingers at others is no answer.

  17. So,

I cant say I have thought long and hard about this, but I have thought about it more often, but I have got to the stage of asking myself a simple question –

what purpose does CQN serve in my life now ?

In the past, at its pinnacle – with the name “Celtic” as the hook in.

I would learn something new everyday, often from people with brains the size of small countries, legal matters and governance explained by giants, BRTH and Auldheid and others.

You could take part in friday quizzes , courtesy of CRC, a prelude to overnight music led by Pablophanqe and joined in from all corners of the world. You went on holiday with books recommended by Greenlion or produced by Winning Captains.

You could volunteer your own stories and articles and have them published in the seville book or the short lived magazines. I have them all as surely will become collectors items in the future. and saint stivs will bepointed out to future grand weans i hope.

VFRs activities with Saint Mary’s an absolute treat to me as history buff.

Irish voices and Republican histories shared that were emotive, thought provoking and hit you between the eyes thanks to Hamilton Tim, Almore and others.

Sometimes you had the shear joy of an interview with a lion or other famous celts.

Huge fallouts and furious rows would often be recovered a day later with a sorry and a virtual handshake. drink would be taken, but grudges forgiven, I fell out with people i was real friends with in real life over golf of all things. and never forget ACGR brilliantly funny retorts, or AWE NAW outing a hun buzz buzz buzz.

Most importanlty these were more than compensated by the true ethos and culture of the blog, a sense of belonging to a shared community with a sense of charitable purpose, Kano, Oscar and Shay, Vanessa and Ton Che Dans wee bhoy, many other things. Partnering VMHAN and STRAND67 at bucket collections

Events like dinners, dublin and lisbon, you didnt need to be there to enjoy them, or enjoy the pictures from MWD.

The huge sadness of losing those kids and also our mates, hurt for real, many affected, many lifes changed for a while. Our Garry, the Stevies, St Johnny doyle people i reallty liked, admired their honesty, bad moments in night shared with an open heart. Held asked for sometimes, help offered often, maybe not on the blog, but a network in the background.

People who posted here helped me through traumatic illnesses, I was that obssed with this place I posted from The Jubilee the morning after having a heart attack.

All of that meant, I could tolerate somehow the negatories, the ingame bleaters, the torn faces. I could slag as good as i got, often unfairly, my temper getting me hotheaded sometimes, and I regret that, i really do.

We are all different but if you cant take joy in what has happened to our football team during this blogs lifecycle well i dont know what makes you happy.

In my own mind i excuse our people in far off lands, you contributed hugely to the missionary work, and are celtic champions, you know your history, and I never got to play with Jinky, that is a story and a half.

WC used to do stats there were some days posts reached near 3,000, with individual posters of 200+ and literally thousands and thousands of views in a single blog.

Which brings me to today and that question again.

what purpose does CQN serve in my life now ?

The banning of Big Jimmy I found pretty mean, his protaginist knows what he does, he knows how to press our mans buttons, our Jimmy was a main-stay on here, old school, very funny, a joy in real life, going through serious illness, losing his beloved pet, this place is a release for him and now withdrawn privelages, its a crying shame, and doesnt do anything for us.

My recent contribution were met with a “gies peace you attention seeking arsehole”, something i wouldnt let someone say to me in a car park or at the game,

any semi-intelligent debate is shut down by mulits or name calling or single line contributors, or the same question ever blog question, whats happening with barrowfield. blah blah

attempts at humour however crap it might appear are just that, attempts at humour.

historical posts and non celtic topics are often just an attempt to keep the blog interesting. lots like them some dont

so, when i left the greenock shamrock, i went to port emerald, but i dont want to join another blog, Sentinal celts also struggles with contributions, i think of this in blog terms aa entering its own 1990s phase,

    its dying on its feet,

and i am offski before i get a big jimmy sanction.

    KEEP IT LIT.

  18. Sorry to hear that Stivs – I’d always read your posts and enjoyed the photos and the stories – the recent spat I thought was out of character.

  19. Even a cursory glance at the smaller, fringe sites – betrays the paucity of contributions and the ingress of multi-nugget sleekitry…………………..

    Don’t let thum win, anything.

Surely the ‘market’ decides what tickets will sell for, just like it decides what players’ wages will be, and what transfer fees are paid – £49 seems to be the equilibrium price – why would a business sell for any less? What reason could a business give to its shareholders for selling goods & services below the price that the market would willingly accept?

Directors have a statutory duty to promote the success of the company.

    Genuine Question:

Celtic is a business – why would you have them act in a non-business manner? Why would you want that? What would it achieve?

    •••••••••••••••••••••

    From last blog.

One persons success is another persons deceit, do you get that??

Are you saying that in, 2016, Celtic PLC were correct to treat, Sevco, as being the same entity as Rangers FC??

If so, you are saying that in 2016, Celtic PLC, were correct to put a previous business arrangement with a business, Rangers FC, that died, administration, liquidation, etc, but just scrub that FACt, and treat, Sevco, as though they were, Rangers FC??

Is that what you are saying??

Are you ok with Celtic’s customers being DONE are you??

If so, you are saying that, Celtic PLC, in 2016, were correct to ignore the volcanic, 4 year long disputes, from 2012 – 2016, amongst Celtic PLC’s customer base, fueled by a “Rangers FC died, and Sevco are a different club” narrative that raged 24/7 on Celtic cyberspace, and elsewhere, and Celtic PLC were correct to say in effect….

“Shut it, stupid Celtic customers. Sevco, will be viewed by us, Celtic PLC, as being the same as, Rangers FC, same club, same name, same colour of strips, same stadium, same songs, same trophy haul, same history, and most importantly for us, Celtic PLC, the same price of tickets, £49, same price as 2012, will be charged in 2016, £49. So put your toys back into your prams. Get rid of your stupid, principles, ethics, morals, ( the pestilent AULDHEID will be dealt with later ) etc, because we, Celtic PLC, have already agreed with our OLDFIRM partners, we will be our usual sleekit selves and, NOT ANNOUNCE the price of the tickets, not until the money is removed from your bank accounts will you know that YOU, TIMMY, that you’ve been PLAYED, by us, Celtic PLC, because you’ll be too busy kissing the ass of our latest, smoke n mirrors act, BRENDAN RODGERS, surely even TIMMY wouldn’t start whining about this SAME CLUB trail of tears, putting their stupid principles, morals, integrity, ethics, FACts and all of that bull, over the importance of backing your new manager, Brendan Rodgers?? Of course you won’t. You’ll pay your £49 to celebrate the return of, the OLDFIRM that some technical hitches prevented the pageantry filled, OLDFIRM, spectacles from taking place in the period between, 2012 – 2016, but no more. The OLDFIRM spectacle has returned, all singing, all dancing, ALIVE and kicking, so be a good customer and get your £49 OLDFIRM money out, back Brendan Rodgers, and get the business juiced up again.”

You, JHB, would just swallow that 👆 or similar??

    Really??

Maybe you should stick to doing your rounds in hospitals, testing patients and counting how many beds were being used by covid patients, and then dropping the covid subject all together, when it was pointed out by, Nigel Farage on GBnews that, 17,000 poor souls had died from the virus, and thankfully NOT the 180,000 that was being reported on ALL other media in UK, apart from GBNEWS, which you seemed to have fallen for the, 180,000 figure, but you weren’t the only one, ain’t it strange how all of the BLARING SIRENS have now moved onto, Ukraine, just as, Pfizer, was lawfully forced to release the first tranche of information about jab side effects, and not A SINGLE WORD has been reported about the jab side effects, on ANY of the BLARING SIREN’S channels??

Do you understand the levels of deceit that has been dumped onto all citizens in UK, and worldwide, over the last 2+ years??

    Take care hh 👍

Mods obsessed with language but the trolls allowed to constantly repeat the same drivel for page after page – George Galloway ffs!

I’ve been around for a long time, I try not to lose the rag but this fine place is being ruined by a small group who are setting out to do just that.

The charity events, the golf outing, the pre match pints – excellent.

As to the banning of Big Jimmy – the mark of the Lanarkshire Refs Association.

Let’s hope for change – and for the the removal of the stupid video of Eddie Howe!

That’s exactly what I thought the last 3 or 4 months when reading this blog

I have been reading this site for years – a goooood many years (not posting as much)

CQN has been a steady influence of positivity to me over the years and have benefitted hugely from it (and as much from the wisdom of the many great posters that have been here thru the years)

It’s why I am here now

Do I really want to give up my time to moderate this site??

    No, I don’t tbh

But can I sit back and watch it descend into a cesspit of bickering and nonsense??

PS I have been moderated a few times myself and am far from a saint, but I will do what I can
