Caring about the Celtic reputation

262

I was at a lecture in Glasgow a few years back on certain mental health conditions when the presenter claimed 1% of the population met the criteria for psychopathy.  In a theatre with 700 people, he noted, that meant 7 of us.

My mind immediately did the sum; 1% of 60,000 people: 600!  You would think 600 psychopaths littered through a football stadium would create mania, but it doesn’t work like that.  Even psychopaths learn to moderate their behaviour to conform in most circumstances.  The power of those around them is important.

I was not at Tannadice on Monday and did not hear any of the offensive material I am assured was sung by some in the Celtic support.  This was an issue (although not always viewed as a problem) for decades, before the move the new Celtic Park stopped it.  That hiatus ended in 2011 when we listened to Oldco fans signing their songbook at Hampden, convinced the book would be thrown at them, before hearing then-Justice Secretary, Kenny MacAskill, praise fans for their behaviour.  The floodgates have never been completely closed since.

What matters most is not that you have some who stand among you who are prepared to tarnish your reputation, but how everyone else responds.  If even psychopaths moderate their behaviour, the almost universal condemnation of the behaviour Celtic fans have shown since Monday will help us police ourselves.  All of us who care about Celtic, have a responsibility to raise our voice.

Great post and can’t argue with any of your wonderful points.

I’m a believer in standing your ground and swinging punches – otherwise, the bad guys win.

That was a very articulate ( and heartfelt ) post. I sincerely hope your “ I’m offski” comment denotes a temporary hiatus, and is not a permanent indicator. If the quality of posts has declined recently, it can also hit bottom and reverse it’s direction. I hope you rethink this decision.

I have had a few off days, rants and so on……… (a good few tbh, some that still raise a smile when I think about them)

The people that are not here for the good of CQN and Celtic live on the oxygen we allow them to breathe

One of the reasons I don’t comment anymore is I spend most of my time scrolling past comments like you mention

And the associated arguments they provoke

But, and there is always a but

If we don’t react, they can’t breathe

If they can’t breathe they will find a new place to live

Which tbh, suits me just fine

  4. Mod1888

Given that you are a mod on here, you must have a little clout with P67, else you wouldn’t be a mod would you, so use that clout to get Big Jimmy back and start modding the trolls, I don’t think it should be that hard, it sure wouldn’t if I was a mod right enough >:)

Well you have contributed as much if not more than most on the positive front in recent times and in that sense alone you will be missed. Not least for giving us views of ol Glasgow town some of which I never knew existed. And having a sense of humour which only 1% on here appear to possess. Which would make you, on my count, one in a million.

Farewell to a latter day Saint

There is no doubt in my mind that the Blog is not what it was. There is equally no doubt in my mind that your leaving it will improve matters. It certainly won`t.

    Some suggestions which might help:

    a) Respond to the content, not to the poster;

    b) Post as one person and not under multiple blog names;

    c)Disagree politely;

    d) Assume ALL posters are Tims even if you feel strongly that some are not;

    e) Forgive Big Jimmy for whatever his `crime` was and get him back;

    f) Maybe a few more responses from Paul to what is being said on HIS Blog.

Hope you reconsider although I must confess I have noted your frustration in recent months, which is not surprising given the nonsense allowed in here

I obviously read you excellent post wrong and that you were not leaving, having re read it I still can’t see where you say you are leaving, I hope I am right.

Mod-I have to ask,why is big Jimmy still not back on here?Others have had 2/3 red card and are still allowed back on.Others are allowed to spout absolute rubbish every day but because they don’t swear it’s ok🤷🏻‍♂️

Hands up here, I know I’m probably the last one to be talking about spouting rubbish. But letting idiots post on here is only going to see CQN go one way .👇🏻

I understand what you are saying but a Moderator’s role is to Moderate- not scroll past, I really appreciate that it not an easy job but we are looking at a 99%+ consensus regarding the real offenders – I never reply to them but you should take action.

Again – thank you for your work

  11. St, Stivs, An outstanding, poignant and accurate post.

As for myself, I can’t remember the year I started here but it was the time the Blog was raising Funds to bring Kano home.

As a Celt domiciled in Tipperary, I was a one man Supporters Club, when I joined.

Conversing with other Celts & discussing all things Celtic with like minded people was a massive boost to me & greatly enhanced the Celtic experience.

When I got to meet Bhoys face to face on Match Trips, The Comradery & craic was mighty,

    I can truly say I never met a CQN’er I didn’t like.

Now everything wasn’t perfect in the old days either, there were blow ups & annoying Posters/Trolls etc, but in recent times this place has gone seriously downhill.

Dozens of great ghuys have walked away and I totally understand why.

I think the banning of Big Jimmy was wrong & heartless,

An elderly man, A Celtic Supporter in poor health living alone in these uncertain times, An online Blog & a bit of cyber chat would be an important aid in helping him get through the day,

When you see the continuous boring insulting nonsense that is tolerated here day after day, it just doesn’t make sense,

We pride ourselves on Charity, we have raised thousands for Mary’s Meals & other worthy causes yet, we can’t hold out the hand of forgiveness & friendship to one of our own,

Does Paul or a Moderator read any of our stuff, I have to believe they do,

A joke this morning with a swear word was latched on to fairly quickly.

I would request a response from someone in authority here, even if it’s negative.

St. Stiv’s, if that was your last Post, then I wish you well,

May I suggest that you keep an open mind, maybe lurk, see does Big Jimmy come back etc,

We need as much of the old guard as possible to be around to celebrate when we win the League.

I never really intended to post and interact as Moderator1888

I guess my last few posts have been to explain my position and motivations for being here as I am now

I run my own business (which is hard in the current times)

I have young children (which is always hard tbh!!)

I have been a Celtic fan for as long as I can remember

I have been reading CQN as far back as 2004

I remember watching David Marshall hold off Barcelona when he was just 19 in a pub in west george street

Actually I dont remember, had to watch the highlights (same for the Uefa Final with Martins Celtic)

I have only been moderating here now for 24 hours

But I will do what I can, when I can

It is a thankless task, but I remember the good times on this blog

It can get back to that

It starts and ends with us

I have as much influence with Paul as you do over the sands that blow across your pool from Africa

I hope your wife is making a recovery and wish both of you the very best

  14. Ghuys if we have a new Mod, then let’s give him a chance,

Nobody would take the job unless they cared for the Blog & wanted to see it get better.

St. Stivs why don’t you hang around as well, you never know from Dissention the Blog might be reborn,

Getting Big Jimmy back would be a great start,

  15. Mod,

I accept that you may not have influence on Paul but maybe you might just alert him to some of the posts about Big Jimmy.

If he chooses to ignore them then so be it.

  16. Mod1888

My apols for the assumption, and thanks, much appreciated.

Have to empty the pool BTW, about an inch of crap on the bottom, heatbreaking, first time for years I have seen the Mrs with tears in her eyes.

Good afternoon all from the Scotia Bar. 600 psychopaths? That’s Philbhoy reached our quota on his own. 😂

    ………..,,,,,,

My mates and I are going to The Scotia tomorrow to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

  19. Not sure, however, maybe this an opportunity to bring this brilliant site home to where it once was, and to rid it, through the Mods and Paul67, of the trolls and multiposters.

I came here, to this site, as a wee bit older guy (not telling :) ) as I could no longer stomach the garbage of the SMSM, I got my Celtic FC. hit from here.

Sadly, I now seem to scroll by posts by certain, well, individual(s),

This is the site that I go to, first thing in the last thing at night ( some of you may have noticed, sorry, :( ).

I will continue to do the same.

St Stivs, I hope you will reconsider your decision, however I respect your choice.

    I am here for

    1. No swearing on this blog, regardless of provocation or circumstances (we can surely debate without resorting to that – IRL I swear like a trooper lol) This is a core value of this blog and has been for as many years as I can remember.

    2. No personal attacks on the poster based on who the poster is (or is not)- we debate/negotiate/ jibber jabber/argue our points based on the content not the man. Again this is a core value of this blog

All the other stuff (hunterlopers, multi names etc etc) regardless of what I think,it is not what I am here for

If you don’t like the poster and can’t debate on the content, then scroll past

That was an eloquent and impassioned lament for the ‘halcyon days’ of CQN – that kinda took me by surprise.

Seemed to me a lot of your recent contributions had tended to smartass baiting and sniping about what others had posted; I tried to engage with you a few times but my ROI on that front was pretty negligible.

Mibby a reflection of your general dissatisfaction with what you were seeing, but adding many glib – sometime patronising – barbs seemed a questionable way to tackle the issue of quality posting on CQN.

P67s headers try to set a conversational tone about key Celtic topics but it’s no guarantee the follow-on will continue to fly the same standard – what can we do? A blog is a living thing and feeds on the input of posters.

Sometimes, good posts are ignored completely becos…mibby they’re not controversial enough to cutthru?

There are still erudite, informed and thoughtful contributions on here – percentage wise it’s around the 3-5% mark. They’re probably all from Celt-minded psychopaths ;)

SAINT; let’s hope your Last Post is not bugling the twilight of your participation on here.

Take a rest, come back refreshed; mibby our winning of a double or treble will make you wanna participate again and will see the blog re-populated by fine Celtic mhen and whomen.

  22. We only ever had a few rules. The no swearing one is good and easy to follow. Only recently has there been a few gormless breaches. Easily rectified.

Allowing the repetitive sleekit spout guff is incomprehensible.

Not so easy to rectify as the nutcase is detrermined to overcome the technological barriers.

Chelsea through to the last 8 of the CL. They are not able to sell tickets for the home leg. I suspect their tie will be settled in one game at the home of whoever they are drawn against.
