Carter-Vickers, asset management and some hope

336

Celtic last broke their transfer record four years ago this week when they paid PSG £9m for then-20-year-old striker, Odsonne Edouard.  Yesterday’s deal to acquire Cameron Carter-Vickers from Tottenham will almost certainly exceed this.  The initial £6m valuation will inevitably rise to £10m.

Cameron was our best defender last season and without him, the job of retaining the title, or competing in the Champions League, would look significantly more difficult.  He becomes a permanent Celtic player at 24, having spent four years on loan in the lower leagues in England before a temporary year at Celtic as part of Ange Postecoglou’s new regime.

He is 17 days older than Odsonne.  In asset management terms, he is a generation ahead of where the striker was when he arrived here from PSG.  In age terms, Cameron is closer to where Christopher Jullien was when he came to Celtic as a 26-year-old.  This means a lot of scouts have had a look at the player and none in the English top-flight have moved for him.  We can, therefore, hope he could be a mainstay in the Celtic team for some years to come.

The defence still needs work but we have paid a solid foundation this week.  Welcome to Celtic, Cameron.

You’re right. It’s not worth arguing about, but here is where I got my information. It’s from Wikipedia.

    Full name: Alexandro Bernabei

Date of birth: 24 September 2000 (age 21)

    Place of birth: Correa, Argentina

    Height: 1.69 m (5 ft 7 in)

    No worries mate.

    Hail Hail.

  2. Yes, he’s not being bought with a future sale in mind, he’s a too old for that now. We could easily see 8 or 9 years of him, and he’s still 3 or 4 years from his peak, one fir both the present and the future.

As for the need for taller full backs, our defending of set pieces improved so significantly in the second half of the season that it no longer became an issue. Whether it’s better organization or replacing tall guys who couldn’t defend them with smaller guys who could, we improved a lot.

The need for big guys all over the park is old thinking. Celtic, like all the progressive teams these days, plan to defend in the opposition half, full backs need to be quick to get up and down, athleticism is all important for recovery runs, strength less so. The further you defend up the park the further away from your by line you are, the fewer corners or free kicks in the final third you concede. We conceded fewer corner kicks than the Huns last season, many fewer than in previous seasons.

These things don’t happen by accident.

Unless we’re signing 5’ 7” full backs without Ange knowing their height or without his agreement, both of which seem pretty unlikely, it looks like Ange sees height as relatively unimportant.

I found that really interesting about the ancestor and brazilian football, i am going to look for the statue next time i go through busby.

As an aside, with all 8 great great granparents hitting a brick wall pre 1880s, with only one marriage record found for a district of coal-island in tyrone, giving us the name of the fasther and mother thats as far as we get, I started looking at PRO NI records, I dont know why but i was suprised to find the family name in the same district so around one hundred years earlier ………… look at the labelling

Good afternoon all from Bowness on Windermere, bags unpacked, now which pub should I attend first👅

  7. BRRB: Wouldn’t be in Inchicore or Bray much but local pubs would be considerably cheaper than city centre pubs. Better still are the GAA/soccer/ working mens clubs but even in those, pints are close to a fiver.

  8. Ralston got some talk up between levein and miller on shortie.

    Well that’s Proddies for you.

But only if we assume that in 1766 the word Papist had the same sectarian overtones as it does today.

Or indeed that in 1766 sectarianism was regarded as a bad thing.

Maybe it’s just that the past is a foreign country and they do things differently there.

But hats off to them anyway for being able to actually carry out a census. Something our own dear leaders have been unable to manage.
