Carter-Vickers, asset management and some hope

336

Celtic last broke their transfer record four years ago this week when they paid PSG £9m for then-20-year-old striker, Odsonne Edouard.  Yesterday’s deal to acquire Cameron Carter-Vickers from Tottenham will almost certainly exceed this.  The initial £6m valuation will inevitably rise to £10m.

Cameron was our best defender last season and without him, the job of retaining the title, or competing in the Champions League, would look significantly more difficult.  He becomes a permanent Celtic player at 24, having spent four years on loan in the lower leagues in England before a temporary year at Celtic as part of Ange Postecoglou’s new regime.

He is 17 days older than Odsonne.  In asset management terms, he is a generation ahead of where the striker was when he arrived here from PSG.  In age terms, Cameron is closer to where Christopher Jullien was when he came to Celtic as a 26-year-old.  This means a lot of scouts have had a look at the player and none in the English top-flight have moved for him.  We can, therefore, hope he could be a mainstay in the Celtic team for some years to come.

The defence still needs work but we have paid a solid foundation this week.  Welcome to Celtic, Cameron.

“anyone remember the William Perry, the NFL star ‘The Refrigerator’ ?”

    —————————————

I do indeed. An absolutely massive, muscular and very wide man with a gentle manner and good sense of humour. His head coach at the Chicago Bears was the ever irascible Mike Ditka, who struggled to keep the “Refrigerator” on his strict diet. There was one very funny advert on U.S. T.V. at the time where the “Fridge” was at home, obviously hungry and eyeing up a real fridge. He opens the door, bends over, and is eyeing the food, when a door at the back of the fridge opens, and Mike Ditka leans in, “Don’t even think about it!” Perry’s expression was very funny. I might not have everything exactly right, but that was the gist of it. I laughed my head off.

  2. I was walking through the St. Enoch Centre recently and saw that they had a bar upstairs. Among the attractions you could pay money to take part in were the usual snooker and darts but then I saw you could pay for Axe Throwing??? In the pubs I grew up in, you didn’t have to pay to watch that.

A weekend that started off with a few drinks with some fine ole bhoys on Friday finished with mrsDavid66 55th birthday yesterday. In between the grandson had a footy tournament on Saturday played 5 won 4 and drew 1, then sunday they drew 4 – 4.

By the way the team (2012s) they played against yesterday had a boy about 6foot in it and he was very comfortable with both feet, strong running etc he scored the 4 goals for the other team.

No way he was a 2012.

Any way a great weekend now back to the grind for 3 weeks then Turkiye

    Have a good one.

  9. Wee bit late to listen from the beginning, but worth catching up on BBC Sounds, ‘Start the Week’ on Radio 4 –

“Social Inequality – Up close” Adam Rutherford chairs the discussion with Darren McGarvey (Loki), Jo Clement (Gypsy-Romany poet/commentator) and Brett Scott whose work has analysed the “cashless society” in ‘Cloud Money’ its’ roots, objectives and impact. Always worth a hear on Monday at 9am, but particularly on this occasion.

An Accountant and a Lawyer walk into a football club,,,

    mahe 13 Jun 2022

,,,and both manage the club very differently under the same owner. Polar opposites almost, and the arrival of Harry Kewell will be further proof of a new strategy.

The accountant wouldn’t have sanctioned him I suspect, not with four coaches already in situ, and Harry aligning with Ange gives him more of a power base within the footballing department. Peter was loath to see footballing operations or its figurehead grow too strong, he liked to wear the trousers in the relationship and not be dictated to, especially over hires.

Given Harry’s age and nationality, he has the opportunity to become an integral part of our Greek Australians backroom staff, and as such would most likely move on with him. He’s not necessarily an asset for the club, I don’t think he’s a long term coach we can count on down the years, rather an extra hand for the here and now.

He’s an asset for Ange though, and that’s what counts these days. Changed times indeed.

One can imagine the gaffer asking the CEO to have his preferred players signed early, so the entire unit gains a full preseason together with zero disruption and late comers.

    Michael acquiesced.

One needn’t imagine Peters response to the request, we witnessed it often enough.

The EPL squad culls and navigation through the early season qualifiers dictated our transfer strategy for many years.

With no qualifiers and eyes looking much more afar than our immediate neighbours to the south, his way of doing business would have been obsolete, and incompatible with Ange.

Thank goodness he’s no longer involved.

Its ironic that upon Peters departure the club shall break the magic 100million barrier, something he achieved only once.

However unlike his predecessor, our CEO is taking steps to secure the income stream and not gamble with it.

The big hundred should be our new benchmark, our yearly aim and a lofty platform from which to dominate domestically whilst making an impact in Europe.

Step number one, get a good manager and keep him happy but within budget.

Michael is making this look easy, hiring early and not pennypinching, plus the exotic targets cost less so the budget is safe. Both men are on the same page here. The gaffer has no reason to complain and feels supported thus wanted.

    Excellent.

Step two, lay down the building blocks for success. While Ange gets compared to Martin occasionally, look at the age of the Derry man’s signings. Most were for the here and now, already in the prime of their career. Some key players depreciated in value over the course of their Celtic career such as Lubo, Boyd, Lambert, Sutton, Lennon, and Thompson.

Others such as Joos, Jacky, Henke, were entering their footballing prime and as such needed prime rewards for their perceived last big contract.

They were great times, but footballing operations wasn’t in the healthiest position.

    That’s been fixed.

A lot our our signings are not in their prime, but aren’t punts either.

Ange has a fantastic eye for talent, that’s a fact. Abada, O’Reilly, Ideoguchi, Hatate, Juranovich, Taylor, Welsh, even Ralston, have all yet to reach their prime, and they haven’t had a taste of the insane money floating around the EPL so their salary ambitions stand a chance of being fulfilled at our club. It won’t be enough for some, I imagine Jota will earn much more elsewhere one day, but our maximum salary will entice a few to hang about.

Nir and Tam were happy enough for instance.

Our players in or around their prime aren’t depreciating yet, as they are on the better side of thirty. There’s no aging talisman ala Broony or Lubo, so overall the outfield ten would have a low average age, around 25 I suspect which is very healthy indeed.

That’s a team for today and tomorrow, and tomorrow’s something Celtic managers often forget or ignore.

The building blocks of success have been laid, the train is on the right track and need only be continually fed the correct fuel to keep running.

Michael seems to have cottoned onto this fact.

    Excellent.

Of course as fans we are entitled to ask why such a big swing in policy?

    Dermot is the simple answer.

Hands off failed us in Peters case, I’m not saying he’s hands on now but Michael is clearly doing the job much differently.

Is it simply the Accountants love of figures and balance sheets that has departed, to be replaced by the Lawyers efficiency and expediency?

    I believe so.

One can just imagine the lawyers brain ticking over thinking ‘you get your players, I keep my balance sheet looking good, silverware flows and fans are extra happy, it’s a deal now please sign here, here and here.’

I’ve wondered if Michaels council or input was ever heard by Peter, given he clearly has a different modus operandus.

    But then, he’s a lawyer.

I mean no disrespect but if asked what’s your preferred profession for your CEO, a lawyer wouldn’t top my list.

Ironically an accountant would be up there as I always envision him/her running a tight ship,,,this much pays the bills, this much for a rainy day (hotel), and here’s your pocket money.

I never imagined he would actually resort to spending your pocket money for you, on new toys that sucked for the most part.

The Lawyer seems much more prone to satisfactory agreement between all parties, who could have seen that coming?

Dermot apparently. After a scathing internal review, the footballing department has adopted a grownup attitude at long last. No longer on the hoof, no longer doing favours for agents (Rami Gershon), we identify and recruit, not take the best of what’s offered.

    Excellent.

The footballing side of the club is doing well, and should run seamlessly for a few years yet.

We are in a position of strength.

Traditionally, we don’t build from here.

If times have truly changed, we will.

    Stay tuned.

    By Mahe.

  11. Am I the only one who can’t stand the idea of Celtic playing in a predominantly black strip? It’s almost as bad, imo, as that abominable bumble bee effort a long time ago. Why not a modern version of the white shirt and green sleeves with the green shamrock? Again imo, that is class.

  12. Frrom Etims

In seasons gone by, we’d be panicking about upcoming UCL qualifiers and being ready for them, which inevitably would come too soon and end in abject misery . which meant that the siginings we wanted wouldn’t come and we’d end up with players that were the managers third or even lower choices.

And if they found somewhere that paid more we’d get a few loans sorted.

These days, all we have to moan about is international football.

Even that raises a smile now and again , with Georgios Giakoumakis, Daezen Maeda and Liel Abada all scoring for their respective countries, interestingly at the beginning of their international careers.

The latter being brought to media attention and having a £17m valuation put on his talents, which in the past would have had him for sale at the first opportunity.

In fact, given the wealth of talent in the forward positions just now, a previous CEO would almost certainly have been leaving post it notes on the managers desk asking if we really needed all these players…

Even the unthinkable and unlikely event of Jota not signing a permanent deal won’t be a tragedy, just a major disappointment.

When he is secured, that will take the Celtic spend to £12m in the first few days of the transfer window, and there’s more to come.

No wonder we don’t see or hear much of Peter Lawwell these days. He’s probably in therapy.

Just the thought of building from a position of strength was completely alien to the previous regime, and the period of relaxation that we as a club seem to be undergoing is such a change from the usual summer that they must be wondering why they never thought of it before.

Think you are beeing a wee bit harsh on the ol’ bumble bee top there though more than a few of us got stung when we went up to the cash desk to pay for it. Then again wasn’t it that very strip that motivated Paul McStay’s immortal phrase – “There’s a buzz about the place”

    No?

  14. Football kits…

Personally don’t sweat them too much. They are a necessary revenue line and billboard for sponsors and their own needs to market their toot.

And anyway, anyone over the age of 21 still wearing a football top and not a member of our squad, is for the watching to be honest.

    HH

  15. The thing is…..the bumble bee style top sells and arguably the black tops too there’s distinction.

The adidas black training top is class (i wear for cycling) personally, just my opinion, instead of white top I’d wear the hoops and distinctive away top.

Would the white top still be considered a ‘clash’ similar to hoops with light top opposition?

  16. Bumble bee strip wasnt my fav but my wee ma when she worked for Celtic Pools asked for the club for a prize for a St Patricks night raffle at St Brendans Yoker.she managed to get a bumble bee strip that was signed by all the players.Big Andy Ritchie then proceeded to draw my ma’s name out for first prize and she won the signed strip…she wouldnt accept prize and it got drawn again.
