Caution when breaking a club’s record sale

249

Go Ahead Eagles have only twice broken the €2m barrier when selling a player, once for €3m and once for €4m (that’s just shy of £3.5m).  Transfermarkt rates Jakob Breum (21), the Danish attacking midfielder who is a reported target for Celtic, their second most valuable current player, right behind the winger who is a reported target for Newco.

After a season when the ‘Eagles finished seventh in Eredivisie, should we really clamour to break new ground for one of their better players?  PSV, Ajax and Feyenoord are sitting this one out.  What the manager wants, the manager gets, that’s why we spent £26m on Idah, Engels and Trusty (and more elsewhere) last summer, but there is a hard truth with every transfer.

Analysis by The Times last month (now paywalled out of my reach) confirmed that across football, “Half your club’s transfers will fail”.  You might out-perform that metric, but few do it consistently and that performance is more often an anomaly than a planning consequence.

Clubs need to have a development plan and, if they want to out-perform the pack, they must stick to it rigorously.  Celtic (correctly) do not advertise what our plan is, but it should be to harvest players at the right age and price, develop the successes into valuable assets, and make our money back on those who do not kick on.

The harsh reality is that no matter how good a player’s YouTube compilation video is, we risk millions on transfer fees, contracts and, more importantly, opportunity cost for players forgone.  My expectation is that Breum’s agent and Celtic are working a deal from both sides.  If concluded, Celtic internet will celebrate a huge success.  That’s the easy part, the hard work to become a success at Celtic all happens after the player gets a squad number.

Don’t overpay – for this guy or anyone else.

Also don’t dither, miss out on necessary strengthening and then overpay for him/ an other later out of pressure/ panic. Do this deal at an acceptable level or move on to the next target.

Poor Mark Lawwell. He was way below that 50% success rate. Closer to 0%. Still, he got the job on merit.

  8. ‘PSV, Ajax and Feyenoord are sitting this one out’

Perhaps because the 3 clubs above already have just as good/if not better players in those positions already?

Obviously a 19 yo CH on loan with no option to buy is what we would call ‘good long term planning’?

    Right you are….

  9. PSV, AJAX FEYENOORD are sitting this one out …historically they’ve missed loads !!!…looking at Ajax pre season…I doubt very much they need him !!!….whereas we look desperate up top

I’d actually attempt to buy both their players …but then don’t worry about HAVING to make money on transfers each and every season!

A loan with no option to buy . The sticking plaster of last resort ?

  11. If this true I bet you Brendan is regretting his promise to see out his contract.

£90/100;mlillion in the bank and they give us this.

I suspect the usual person is behind this decision.

A absolute joke and a slap in the face to all Celtic supporters 😡

  12. I’d say Celtic are doing well.

Making several times the buying fee on the likes of Kuhn, MOR, Eduoard etc.

And they seem good at getting most of their money back from those that don’t work out, from selling.

At least we’ve had few more Scheidts, Gravesens, Boerrigters, Hedmans etc

all of that is fair comment but the same for every club, just different budgets.

Liverpool spending loads but their sale assets are worth a lot to help balance the books.

As of the close of the last window we needed a top striker, centre half, centre mid (spine). Tierney signed up

As of the start of this window we needed a top striker, centre half, centre mid, 2 wingers (Kuhn and Jota injury)

As of today we still need that striker (unless Yamada is it), centre half (Inamura isn’t supposed to be it), centre mid, 2 wingers (Nygren looks a midfielder) and now back up LB

Lots of work to do. Man City lad might be the CH, we do appear to after several wingers, rumour on young Liverpool CM, very quiet on LB and striker so maybe Inamura is the man at LB and we are happy with our strike options if we get the wingers (Maeda as striker).

Big month ahead but think we will come out the blocks on Sunday firing

  14. Not the most inspiring signing if it happens, in as much as it doesnt seem to be pleasing anyone. Its hardly an unknown market for clubs our size, everyone will have seen enough of him to make a decent call and there will be enough data to make a fully informed call, but ultimately it matters little what we think.

with every new signing theres the question of how much he cost these days and how quickly he can make an impact, hopefully it wont affect his chances

not sure what to make of a nineteen year old on loan for a season, it doesnt make sense on a few different levels.

  15. We’re signing Pusey and I’m pleased to say I don’t know what impotant means nor do I know what impotent means 😉

  16. From previous thread…

“Not hard for us to sign players. Easy, just pay for them”.

Are these players available at the local corner shop, or do we need to shop at the out if town supermarket?

Here was me thinking the selling club, agent, and the player himself may prove have a say!

Ps. Not naming the poster, as my response is aimed at the post (which illustrates the views of many on here)…unfortunately.

Pusey makes no sense, all we are doing is developing someone else’s player. So we are incapable of buying one outright or even with a option to buy🤫

  18. It’s cute to think we still fish in the same market as the Dutch big teams. PSV just bought a winger from Alkmaar for 16m, Ajax a winger from Vallodolid for 11m (presumably Barcelona and Real Madrid sat that one out), and Feyenoord 10m on a winger from Porto.

These teams have adapted and grown their transfer model organically, while Celtic are left giddy hoovering up the development scraps that their historical transfer rivals have long moved on from.

  20. We’d be mad to over pay by a couple of million, reducing our cash balance to a paltry £78 million.

No, let’s keep the cash and go with Yang and Tillio for the CL play off.

  21. Did you write this on the heated driveway or did he just hand you it?

    It’s excruciating.

  22. Like many , I question signing a 19 year old from another club on loan , with no option to buy .

Our scouting leaves me bereft of faith .

I still fear that we will sell Maeda, and possibly Hatate .

Tilio , Yang, Welsh , are not good enough .

Where is the fast and powerful quality that Brendan speaks off?

We seem to have no gettable targets , that match the standards that our manager desires.
