Cautionary tale from Denmark

943

Midtjylland play their second league game of the season away to AaB Aalborg tomorrow evening, hoping to win their first points.  Aab finished seventh last term, so it is a game Midtjylland will feel they have to win to get their domestic campaign on track.

Celtic are free of competitive pressures this weekend, facing West Ham at home tomorrow, where we can give players still working on their fitness an hour, then rest them for the trip to Denmark.

There is plenty of confidence ahead of the second leg against Midtjylland after a solid performance on Tuesday night but the name Aalborg will cause many of us to flinch.  The then Danish champions travelled to Celtic Park in the 2008 Champions League group stage.  It is fair to say they could be the weakest team we faced at that level, but indecisive finishing, for some of the game against 10 men, and a missed Barry Robson penalty, meant the game finished 0-0.

Celtic bossed the return leg at Aab’s tiny stadium and Robson atoned for his penalty miss by giving the visitors a second half lead.

Here’s the thing about football.  You can think you are safe, then a deflected shot flies in from nowhere and a deflected cross hits a defender and allows a semi-professional outfit to beat Celtic to the Uefa Cup spot.

I hope we use every moment of our preparatory time tomorrow wisely.  Nothing can be taken for granted.

Booing Griff based on what established facts………supporters my @@@@

  2. love the way Ange has us playing going forward

board is letting the team down at the moment – we don’t have a defense – starting with goalkeeper. All the talk has been about a high back but taylors lack of pace and physicality has been exposed all day here.

promising going forward , promising tactics – woeful negligent defence! youngsters have given their best in the center but should never be playing unless surrounded by experience .

I’d start with urighide on wed.

PS Booing of Griffiths is sickening

  3. So the polis & the club find no criminality but a section of our support start acting like Nikla.

  4. If I was in Griffs sambas I would be for moving on now. No way back for a section of supporters,

Regardless of what strip he is wearing I think he is going to get a torrid time from every support.

  5. exactly – BOARD get defenders as a matter of urgency ASAP.

I know its just a friendly but this has got the boards incompetence written all over it – Celtic fans and Ange won’t tolerate their dithering much longer!!

A game like this should focus the mind of the board.

    Why?

Pre season friendly under a new manager.

They have downsized for the past 3 years and ignored shambolic failures in CL qualifying so why would they GAF at this

It should focus the board on maximising as much profit/bonus this year as they can, because if they ignore the support this year, there will be nothing next year.

Griff did not do anything illegal, but that doesn’t mean he should be exempt from criticism. You do not have to commit an illegal act to be fired from your place of work. Plus, Griff already has a chequered past, so he is hardly starting from a position of favour with many elements of the support.

The reason Griff is still here is because of the desperate situation we are in as a club – a situation squarely on the shoulders of our custodians; if only they took a page out of Ange’s book and owned their own actions.

Griff should be moved on asap.
