Cautionary tale from Denmark

943

Midtjylland play their second league game of the season away to AaB Aalborg tomorrow evening, hoping to win their first points.  Aab finished seventh last term, so it is a game Midtjylland will feel they have to win to get their domestic campaign on track.

Celtic are free of competitive pressures this weekend, facing West Ham at home tomorrow, where we can give players still working on their fitness an hour, then rest them for the trip to Denmark.

There is plenty of confidence ahead of the second leg against Midtjylland after a solid performance on Tuesday night but the name Aalborg will cause many of us to flinch.  The then Danish champions travelled to Celtic Park in the 2008 Champions League group stage.  It is fair to say they could be the weakest team we faced at that level, but indecisive finishing, for some of the game against 10 men, and a missed Barry Robson penalty, meant the game finished 0-0.

Celtic bossed the return leg at Aab’s tiny stadium and Robson atoned for his penalty miss by giving the visitors a second half lead.

Here’s the thing about football.  You can think you are safe, then a deflected shot flies in from nowhere and a deflected cross hits a defender and allows a semi-professional outfit to beat Celtic to the Uefa Cup spot.

I hope we use every moment of our preparatory time tomorrow wisely.  Nothing can be taken for granted.

  1. when lawwell took over as ceo we had just lost a eufa cup final to porto, after extra time and after being reduced to 10 men. porto went on to win the champions league the next season.

    look where we are now.

all down to one man. a man who has taken mllions of pounds out of this club and who has cost this club tens of millions of pounds in lost revenue.

finishing 25 points behind sevco. a club struggling from financial crisis to finacial crisis.

a club that cheated for over 10 years and lawwell said and did nothing.

there people on this site who still back lawwell.

  2. In little over a month we are playing at Ibrox.

We must have a new keeper & RB in place by then that are several levels above Barkas and Ralston.

Lawwell was DD’s faithful servant. Who do you think decided to stick with NL so long? Who do you think was prepared to wait months for Eddie Howe to sign a contract?

No criticism of anyone’s opinion. I’ve been doing this long enough to know how fickle football fans can be, myself included. Its a results driven industry.

Will we win the league? Certainly not wish the current squad.

Will we strengthen, i certainly hope so and I expect we will be much stronger . I think we can them make a much more informed forecast of where we will be af the end of the transfer window,

Peter Lawwell was the CEO. He was paid £1.3m. Do you think he was given that princely sum to rubber stamp DD’s decisions? Recent accounts showed DD did not attend one board meeting in a fiscal year.

PL was the main man here. DD was not negotiating player purchases, sales or contracts. He would have had high level input on strategic decisions and, I’m sure, on managerial recruitment, but he is not a majority shareholder who made all the decisions for the club. The CEO is the guiding hand here.

So now Ange get to see it and decide.

The Ryan bashers, I think he is going to suprise a lot of people, probably play well, and run down his contract if someone doesnt come in.

I think there is a lot of anger amongst fans, not only for where we find ourselves now, but also for the lack of acceptance of responsibility from those in positions of power.

It was one thing to blow TIAR but the manner in which we have done so and the various other car crashes during that season and since are beyond belief.

Ange is in the door a month and is taking responsibility for poor performances. All murmurs out of Celtic Park last season were of surprise as to the fans displeasure. Talk about complacency and a disconnect from reality.

And after it was all said and done, the only guy who lost his job was NL (and we knew he was on his way out since October). Do you think the mess we find ourselves in can be distilled down to one man’s actions? It seems like that’s the conclusion arrived at within the walls of Celtic Park.

Every manager has said they had regular chats with PL and DD.

If DD was hands off then the manager wouldn’t have any contact with him.

DD is only a shareholder that happens to have the most shares, yet acts like he owns the whole club.

  11. seriously – I think Barkas is the worse keeper I have seen in a celtic jersey , ever! actually, I think he’s the worse keeper I’ve seen in the SPL.

    He’s playing to get fired!

Look at the penalty – he just falls down. The goal to let in at his near post, a ball perfect height for a keeper and he didnt even budge. He has lost all mojo and their is simply no way back.

He is a liability and celtic MUST immediately go out and buy a commanding GK as a matter of urgency.

Forget rangers in a month – that defense will struggle against every other SPL team!

I’m not panicking as we are 3-4 defensive players from being a good team – but I’m very concerned about our boards lack of urgency!

  12. No joy in losing heavily particularly to an EPl team, luckily this doesn’t happen too often. We have to be patient the whole club from manager to players is in transition and yes we await the return of Julien and some of the new players who still have to come into the team when various protocals are fulfilled. Bad mistake to pick West Ham at this point in time for Celtic, why not go for lesser opposition for pre season.

  13. Really enjoyed the first half, the high press, quick accurate passing, good movement off the ball, it’s amazing the vast majority of those players were there last season, we know they’re good players but the speed in which Ange has transformed them back is very encouraging. Great goal by Callum.

That was the top half of the pitch, bottom half oh dear… Abject, that would not have done the confidence of the young lhads any good, feel especially sorry for Welsh who was coming onto a game.

I would like to think that none of our starting back 4 will be first picks in a few weeks time.

As for Griffiths. He should have been chased las season.

Great to be back at Celtic Park, our young defenders? were ragged dolled with the

    Who boos a Celtic jersey?

  20. An absolute disaster of a fixture in hindsight.

I think in summer 1966 we played teams a good bit below our standard and hammered them all… My point being, and I say this every year, would we better off playing teams that we’ll beat easily in pre-season games?

Pros and cons but I think we would.

Like last season, whoever plays in defence on Wednesday night, will have to play knowing that a shot on target will probably be a goal… That must be a fekin nightmare.

Other than Boruc and Forster we have never had the best goalkeeper in the league and yet we’ve regularlly/usually had the best in every other position…I’ve never understood it.

The fact that not a single person at CP seems to have to have told the manager that we desperately needed even a short-term local goalkeeper to play until we got who we wanted is crazy AND unacceptable.

Still think we’ll win the league and we’ll probably qualify for the EL the long way.

Today shows that we can’t afford to wait until winter for Julien to get match fit so we by reckoning we still need..

    2 strikers

    2 full backs

Playing a very good West Ham team was always going to be precarious. On a positive note, they’re probably the best team we’ll play for some time. Sign whoever tomorrow and they’ll still not be available for a few weeks.

The whole board should be dismantled. Really like the look of Ange, although he’ll need to adapt his all out attack philosophy at times, especially in Europe (whichever competition we end up in). This debacle makes you wonder if our board actually watch football and know anything about it.

  23. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

Desmond and Lawwell are two cheeks of the same you know what. Not worth debating who’s more to blame. All this piffle about them being Celtic fans? Ha! Just robber barons like we’ve seen through the ages.

Jury’s out on Dom because he’s new. However, can’t shake the feeling that he’s just a replacement cheek for Lawwell. Logic dictates Desmond wouldn’t recruit on any other basis.

  24. Building a squad from scratch is a very difficult job. This is what Ange is charged with. We have no solid core on to which the manager can ‘bolt-on’ his additions.

During Brendan’s time he brought in seventeen players – only Dembele, Euouard, Ntcham, Sinclair, Roberts and to a lesser degree Hayes, could be classed as successful. The difference between then and now is that there was already a core squad in place for BR when Ronny left. Sinclair, Dembele, Edouard & Roberts lifted performance levels higher than they been before, in a relatively short time.

Ange knows what the task is – today, and everytime he speaks, it is obvious that he is looking medium to long-term. How any of us, especially after today, can envisage us winning the title this season, is beyond me.

We should draw strength from our recent success and appreciate, as they say in the stock -market, things go down as well as up. Patience may be a virtue, however at this moment in time at Celtic, it is a necessity. Necessity is also the ‘mother of invention’.

Let’s wait and see what Ange can invent – one thing is for sure, he can’t work miracles

Didn’t ever expect to experience a lower standard than this summer’s comprehension of written English on CQN.

Step up to the plate the Celtic support at Penny Cars. Visual comprehension of the instructiion to sit at a seat with a green tick attached, too much for you.

  27. The Huddle…. I genuinely believe that he’s a top-notch manager and once he gets the players he needs to add then I think we’ll be an excellent team.

The sevs won’t have everything going for them and we won’t have all the things we went through last year to face.

I was never a fan of Craig Gordon. To me it was like having a striker that scored 3 overhead kicks a season but nothing else. I can’t remember once coming out a game and saying…..Big Craig saved us today.

Although he’s still better than we have now.
