Cautionary tale from Denmark

943

Midtjylland play their second league game of the season away to AaB Aalborg tomorrow evening, hoping to win their first points.  Aab finished seventh last term, so it is a game Midtjylland will feel they have to win to get their domestic campaign on track.

Celtic are free of competitive pressures this weekend, facing West Ham at home tomorrow, where we can give players still working on their fitness an hour, then rest them for the trip to Denmark.

There is plenty of confidence ahead of the second leg against Midtjylland after a solid performance on Tuesday night but the name Aalborg will cause many of us to flinch.  The then Danish champions travelled to Celtic Park in the 2008 Champions League group stage.  It is fair to say they could be the weakest team we faced at that level, but indecisive finishing, for some of the game against 10 men, and a missed Barry Robson penalty, meant the game finished 0-0.

Celtic bossed the return leg at Aab’s tiny stadium and Robson atoned for his penalty miss by giving the visitors a second half lead.

Here’s the thing about football.  You can think you are safe, then a deflected shot flies in from nowhere and a deflected cross hits a defender and allows a semi-professional outfit to beat Celtic to the Uefa Cup spot.

I hope we use every moment of our preparatory time tomorrow wisely.  Nothing can be taken for granted.

  5. CQN is, in my opinion, the finest Celtic debating site there is.

However like any site, any family, there are differences of opinion

1/3rd of CQN – Peter lawell is evil. He is responsible for every ill we now face. Brendan was our saviour

1/3rd of CQN – Peter lawwell should be beatified. Brendan was a snake

1/3rd of CQN – we won a quadruple treble. What a fabulous decade we’ve seen. However, the board have fecked up the past few seasons and we’re now pretty crap.

I hope we see more grown up debate this season and less name calling and gesture politics

  6. Middle to front we were generally good today, well in the first half.and I can see the style causing teams problems.

However, the backline was shown up as very poor, the reason is simple the gk is poor despite the big reputation prior to arriving here. 2 poor fullbacks and 2 young kids playing in the centre.

Jullian was a big miss last season, no less this season, but celtic knew he was injuried and he has not been replaced. ajer has raised a good fee but his replacement is still no in scotland or able to play.

At bare min levels we need a gk, rightback, leftback, centreback, left winger and forward.

Reckon boli, eduard, christie and ntcham will go this window. We will need another midfielder and striker if/ when that happens.

Not ready to be giving up on league aspirations but without swift recruitment I worry

Never mind the spelling mistake.i thought you were right about Celtic in those 3 years 67-70.

seem to recall The Ac milan manager suggested on his review of winning the 69 cup they did not fear anyone after Prati pounced and scored in 2nd leg against Celtic they were the team to beat.Had this 7 year old greetin, was bawin ma heid of the following year versus Feyenoord.

Dont forget Inter avenged lisbon in 1972 and ruben ayala and athletico kickedus of park.

We lost out to joak wallaces pish.

interesting to downward spiral meant the old board dip ended as Taylor report and bradford meant we had to change.

we were also playing a cheat.Sir Hunner of Pence’s pre discount option/pre ebt “offshore payments” cheated/knuckled to 9iar.Sir Hunner was at it from day 1.still costing society millions with the ongoing malicious cases( basically attempting to nazify/redact history to say he had nowt to do with the shitinoot and liquidation of identity in 2012

The change and impact of TV has had a massive effect.i feel UEFA and FIFA now cater for football for the widest possible viewing audience instead of the widest possible range of people playing.football now goes to the countries viewing audience, look at CL whats all that bout 4/5 teams from one country.it is anti competive.

The spl is harsh but a lot of national leagues are too, your hyper marketed super duper epl

has a fair amount of dirge. but its a league we get roughly 2.5 million for winnin 9iar while sheff utd get £102,000,000 for being relegated from soccers ‘NBA.’ darn sarff..

its odd how the tectonic plates of football are changing but as covid and the epl 6 show a game without fans is now possible. To those who own and deal with our corrupt sport we need openness and transparency, post 2012 it is not an option here,as Bada says Stewart robertson appointment show its inculcated here.

On Brendan he is part of our history.not the other way bout, well i suppose ongoing history

and continuity since 1888 means the odd change eh but the psychological importance of “paying the bills” and doing the right thing for Celtic since the bunnet came in is important.we are Celtic.same one from St Marys hall.absolutely no “aye-bit” about our identity.

Well am havering enough.its important we give Celtic on to future generation.we could speculate to accumalate in finance terms but we could endanger an identity forged out of genocide in An Gorta Mor and it would be done so easily with today deal structuring.

hope yir good.my 2 pals go balloted today, Celtic since 50s(young yins 81 and 83,) they remind me of the old navvies my da(long passed 40 years) used to work with building hydros,if they didnt meet a local(donegal) man they knew there was’ always Celtic’ a place to feel at home, among your own and you might even get’ word’ from home.

    enjoy Celtic as always

We fans (and big ones) have no option but patience.

Attitude is the domain of the playing and coaching staff.

APs comments starkly tell players that their future is their responsibility.

  10. Certainly no need to panic as some of our probably, hopefully, top players have been signed but not sighted yet -Starfelt and our Japanese forward, KF, and there’s more “ready to play” coming in. But it does seem obvious that Barkas is never going to cut it. Our full backs are never going to be more than back-up. We need an out and out striker: KF scores a lot but he’s not really a striker and I don’t think Ajeti has the requisite skill set and Griff I doubt will ever regain his best. We all accept I think that players’ careers are short and they “deserve” the wages they get but by the same token it’s a results game and the manager has to be ruthless at times. So I think Ange will let go Griff, Ncham and Barkas and Eddie will go if Brighton are willing to pay 20M, personally I’d accept anything over 15M. I agree with Sutton that RC should be offered a new bumper deal – I’m not sure he really wants to go – we got him for a penny and I suspect his wages reflect that. I would give him the same as Calmac and foster both players as the key to the future.
