Cautionary tale from Denmark

943

Midtjylland play their second league game of the season away to AaB Aalborg tomorrow evening, hoping to win their first points.  Aab finished seventh last term, so it is a game Midtjylland will feel they have to win to get their domestic campaign on track.

Celtic are free of competitive pressures this weekend, facing West Ham at home tomorrow, where we can give players still working on their fitness an hour, then rest them for the trip to Denmark.

There is plenty of confidence ahead of the second leg against Midtjylland after a solid performance on Tuesday night but the name Aalborg will cause many of us to flinch.  The then Danish champions travelled to Celtic Park in the 2008 Champions League group stage.  It is fair to say they could be the weakest team we faced at that level, but indecisive finishing, for some of the game against 10 men, and a missed Barry Robson penalty, meant the game finished 0-0.

Celtic bossed the return leg at Aab’s tiny stadium and Robson atoned for his penalty miss by giving the visitors a second half lead.

Here’s the thing about football.  You can think you are safe, then a deflected shot flies in from nowhere and a deflected cross hits a defender and allows a semi-professional outfit to beat Celtic to the Uefa Cup spot.

I hope we use every moment of our preparatory time tomorrow wisely.  Nothing can be taken for granted.

  1. Good morning cqn from another beautiful sunny morning in the Garngad. Back to work manana.😥😥😥

We have needed a centre back, right back, left back for about 5 years maybe even longer. Now add a good goalkeeper that we knew we needed when Forster left (2years ago). Too right we dont sign players quickly.

Our whole back 5 are a shambles. Utter shambles.

As someone said we are still doing the 1 player out get 1 for that position in debacle.

We need at least another 5,6,7 1st team ready or at least squad ready established (not projects) players.

Ffs our league campaign starts on Saturday and we dont even have the bones of a team.

Could anyone tell me our strongest 11 that they think will be in with a shout of winning the League?

As for fans booing a Celtic player that should never happen.

Boo the board the “Hun loving criminals” they have got us in this state. We all knew last October that as a club we were going nowhere under Lenny, but the board would not “give into fan protests etc” see how that turned out ya twats.

  2. The reality will be we get 25m……..for Eddy.

He’s genuine quality and that always gets real money.

    – unlike the made-up guff from the Toilet Block.

    A Goalkeeper is a priority, then a striker. Let’s win the league we’re in………….

Celtic fans had ever right to boo Griffith.

This whole ‘my club right or wrong’ mindset is pernicious.

And given what other matters concerning the club are ongoing elsewhere it sends out entirely the wrong message.

    Boo the board

    _____

Incompetence/negligence of the board is staggering.

Back four has a promising young boy of just 18 who is starting his first competitive games in CL qualifiers! His partner is another promising 21 year-old, who in reality is a squad player. Right back we have a hard working guy who should not even be backup. Left back another hard working but not good enough, who is backup only. Our midfield is the only half decent area but that also needs strengthening. I’m an optimist but we’re in for a very tough star to the league campaign and will do well to get into the Europa group stages. D we go with same back four for Wednesday? Don’t have many options. Hjelde might have been a better option at this stage as he had a good time at Ross County where he played every week. Yet, we may lose him to Leeds! Urhoghide is not an option right now. He is very raw and dives in and will need a lot of coaching. Losing six at home, even though it’s a good team from the mega bucks EPL, is hard to take.

  5. Far too many crucial facts that have a significant bearing on the recent social media event not being given credence.

The bald facts of a story shaped to fit an agenda.

An opportunity for some – but it doesn’t alter the facts no matter how horrible the subject matter is.

  6. How would we compare to similar European teams (in monetary terms) across Europe? Not very well I’d guess. Who is the board accountable to if they’re not up to it? No-one that matters, it seems. We can only hope that Dom is the whiz kid he’s made out to be and drives through change. Otherwise it’ll be rock bottom and we ourselves will have to force it again.

    Yes they do.

Or anyone else for that matter.

Understandable action in some circumstances perhaps?

But I’ve never seen a footballer play better in response to being booed by his own.

Watched a big slob and his pals booing Griffiths yesterday a few rows in front of us.

Lets not pretend this was all moral high ground stuff – this crew were just doing it to hear their own voices – all a big laugh.

The boo boys are increasingly in full throat at Celtic Park. Booing West Ham – here for a friendly – booing Groffiths – booing Bitton – etc. – then leaving early.

    Why do they bother coming?

  9. Have to say

I struggle with the thought, it is only our defence that needs sorted.

Many teams like yesterday, are walking right through our so called strong area of midfield

This needs sorted to offer the defence a level of protection

And then we also need to look at forward line, and their support for midfield

Huge work tobe done, to get us playing as a team, and not individuals

  10. We need a defensive coach who can show not only the defence but the forwards and the midfield how to defend when we’re not in possession.we were all over the place yesterday.

On the plus side there was some fast moving attacking play that an interested forward might just finish off.

  11. “BIG GEORGES FAN CLUB – HAIL, HAIL, WEE OSCAR on 25TH JULY 2021 9:47 AM

The boo boys are increasingly in full throat at Celtic Park.”

I wasn`t there yesterday but the response you describe disappoints but does not surprise me. My once high opinion of The Greatest Supporters in the World has diminished greatly of late.

I feel this was brought about by the hope of ten in a row changing to an expectancy . An entitled expectancy.

There were many reasons why it didn`t happen — Covid,Sfa,Referees,Scottish Government et al — but the easiest way to explain our fall from grace was to blame almost everything and everyone at the Club –Board,Manager and players. It would seem that Griffiths was the available target yesterday.

People who have been hurt need to vent their anger and frustration on something or someone. As a result, our once fantastic support has begun to resemble entitled Huns.

  12. Most people round me where clapping Leigh…

The guy looked crestfallen in the centre circle when he restarted the game..

    Sad..

This laddie has had psychological issues in the past..

    Think folks please….☘

  13. As Ange said we attack and defend as a unit , the attacking as unit was ok , the defending as a unit was pretty non existent … Let’s hope there’s a better mix on Wednesday .

    Up the Hoops

  14. Better to get the eye opener in preseason than when the real business starts and that’s the only positive from yesterday.

We need three full backs (2 RB and 1 LB) and a keeper as a minimum.

We looked threatening going forward and Christie is back in form so there’s some positives.

Wednesday now looks an uphill task given the defensive shambles we seen yesterday.

As for Griff, he should be out the door. I expect not to hear anything else from our board about principles so long as Griffiths is drawing a salary.

  15. The support / us — the downfall from Seville.

Start with the coked up zoomers / the Green Huns / the GB wannabees + hingers on.

The world is changing — identity politics to the fore — and we as a group have been caught up in that.

The baby boom of 63-65 which had Maggie and the Miners Strike as its defining experiences has declined in the face of pension fever / Forger’s Gazette lies / Facebook propaganda / Nat love / migration away from real progressive politics — no wonder we are in the state we are.

Which leaves the shouty “youth” who grew up in the TB + GB time of plenty / who do not understand revolutionary violence aka physical force republicanism and who think they know it all now being the face of our club and our support — or at least the ones with the loudest voices.

One group saw Football Casuals for what they were — attention seeking muppets with no style and even less backbone.

The other group wants to become ultras first — attention seeking muppets who like their life to someone else’s formula with no engagement to the society around them — and CFC fans second.

We are living in interesting times.

And yes we were that bad yesterday.

I only saw the 9 minute highlights but that was enough.

God, that is a ridiculous take.

If anyone resembles the Huns, it’s the element of the support who are unquestioning of the actions of those who run Celtic, as that is exactly what Oldco fans did with their club.

  17. Where’s the reasoned, reasonable articulation of some sort of middle -ground?

    Why the extremes?

    Panto stuff…………

    Oh yes it is……..

  18. Go tell the Spartim on

You know your in dire need of players when WGS says we need 2 players and whilst making his argument decides it’s actually 4 we need, and that’s with his managerial hat on.

Personally I think we need 6 or 7 for the first team.

I think LG has cashed in his chips with us, and for some time now, people are entitled to boo or clap etc I’d rather do neither

  19. I think it’s in LG’s best interests to leave, perhaps for Hibs where I’m sure he will be loved. He will never reach his best again in a Celtic shirt and will always be unreliable even if he does well in any particular game. He will get less money at Hibs but it is of his own doing.

  20. Sláinte Ange on

Eboue Kouassi (remember him?) sent off for 2nd yellow for Ivory Coast, following a straight red for Dani Alves after 14 minutes. Game then became a bit of a stalemate and finished 0~0.

  21. Guys I dont know about entitlement expectancy. I do know about expectancy and we at least should all expect better than what’s on offer.

No matter what – I for one will always support Glasgow Celtic. Will our board members? Oh and I understand about business is business blah, blah, blah no matter what team the suits support. Thing is does someone who does not have our club at heart feel the need to fight for everything and or defend our club. Personally I do not think so.

Players are a different story as they will battle for each other on the park or they should, but our custodians….not a chance and the last year has shown these charlatans up. From building fences to taking us for granted.

I find it appalling that anyone can Boo a celtic player. Only my opinion.

    D :)

  22. If Sparky does not find redemption in the Hoops, he will leave for poor form, nothing else,

I hope he finds his shooting boots soon. I’d hope it bolsters his self-esteem and secures a footballing first place in our mindsets.

God, that is a ridiculous take.

    ——————-

ROLLING_STONE – I understand your sentiment but, I have to agree with HOT SMOKED about an element of our support – although unlike the Huns, it is, thankfully, a real minority.

Agree also with some of what MadMitch said – particularly when he mentioned “….coked up zoomers / the Green Huns / the GB wannabees + hingers on…” – a bit harsh maybe, but the description could be attached to a growing number of – usually young, usually olive-clad – ‘Celtic fans’.

Been seeing some truly cringeworthy behaviour more frequently in recent years – entitlement at Celtic Park and boorish ned stuff to the locals when we are travelling away from home – stuff that was a rarity in the past (a group taking the piss out of a wee auld woman in a local shop in Dingwall was a particular embarassment).

As I say – very much a small minority, but it seems to me to be growing. They are eroding a very hard-won reputation.

I’m hoping it is a transient thing – a malaise that will pass.

Remember our unique history and traditions – because they are truly special and unique – but we need to watch we don’t just become another ‘big club’ with ‘big club’ fans.

so you guys all happy that LG flirting with a child? that acceptable behaviour for a Celtic player? would it be ok if it was your mate and your daughter? get a grip . the man has disgraced the hoops . move him on pronto

  25. Yes our lack of signings has been the stuff of nightmares, considering the stakes. The amount of dithering considering the urgent need for reinforcements,is mind boggling. We had 19,000 there yesterday, instead of trying to be some kind of widos booing Griff, why did they not vent their anger towards the Board sitting in the stand.A concerted “Sack the Board”chant, would have done a lot more than booing a guy with health issues.

Sometimes you really do miss the GB.

Could it be said it was the same in the 60’s, 70’s and early eighties with cheap wine being the drug of choice and behaviours that were just as bad as the GB???
