Cautionary tale from Denmark

943

Midtjylland play their second league game of the season away to AaB Aalborg tomorrow evening, hoping to win their first points.  Aab finished seventh last term, so it is a game Midtjylland will feel they have to win to get their domestic campaign on track.

Celtic are free of competitive pressures this weekend, facing West Ham at home tomorrow, where we can give players still working on their fitness an hour, then rest them for the trip to Denmark.

There is plenty of confidence ahead of the second leg against Midtjylland after a solid performance on Tuesday night but the name Aalborg will cause many of us to flinch.  The then Danish champions travelled to Celtic Park in the 2008 Champions League group stage.  It is fair to say they could be the weakest team we faced at that level, but indecisive finishing, for some of the game against 10 men, and a missed Barry Robson penalty, meant the game finished 0-0.

Celtic bossed the return leg at Aab’s tiny stadium and Robson atoned for his penalty miss by giving the visitors a second half lead.

Here’s the thing about football.  You can think you are safe, then a deflected shot flies in from nowhere and a deflected cross hits a defender and allows a semi-professional outfit to beat Celtic to the Uefa Cup spot.

I hope we use every moment of our preparatory time tomorrow wisely.  Nothing can be taken for granted.

Support the guy he’s a Celtic player – ridiculous comment.

The wearing of the jersey carries with it huge responsibilities.

Griffiths cares not one jot about that.

    ——–

Laughed out loud reading this AND the BS explanations for his absence being peddled.

It’s a tricky one for Sevco.

How can you pass off such an absence as

    not serious

    not unprofessional

    not selfish

    not calculating

    For what it’s worth …

Two post-match narrative options for Sevco Vs Real Madrid are already written.

Option A – Sevco win or a draw

The absence of top stars will not rate a mention.

“Tavernier, Kamara and Morelos (WHOOPS) looked impressive against the kings of Europe / European Elite / Blah blah”

    Option B – loss.

“Only two things matter. Fitness and showing the players were we want to get to”

    Credit where it’s due.

On paper this fixture is a smart move by Sevco.

Their friends at Sly Sports will rush to televise it (take note true Celtic fans).

Scouts will turn up to watch Real Madrid’s B-List for any nuggets (the Sevco hope being they see a Sevco player that interests them too).

    Where is the plan weak?

The phrase “speculate to accumulate” actually has two verbs?

Sevco have been doing the first for four years, ZERO of the second.

    Tick tock.

Real Madrid know the value of their brand and they don’t rent it out cheap.

If there is any change from half a million euros for their match fee (plus expenses) for this run out I’d be amazed.

  9. Spikey – Hope you are well.

I was never a great player anyway, happy to pass any baton onto my Grandson.

All the weans done brilliant. Wish I knew you were at the pitz on Friday we could have had a wee chat.

Even in the current Celtic set up we have some really good young players they just need nurturing and bleeding in with some experienced players.

    Hail Hail Spikey

    D :)

  10. Saint Stivs – I like your photos…keep on keeping on Amigo.

Brian F – You ok? We are all frustrated but let’s keep the heed.

I just watched the highlights of yesterday’s game for the first time . You couldn’t call our defence a sieve because a sieve only has wee holes in it – our defence had alarmingly huge holes for west Ham to exploit .

I feel sorry for the likes of Murray and Welsh , they were like lambs to the slaughter , and I only hope this hasn’t damaged their confidence too much.

I can only echo what many others have been saying – it is sheer professional negligence from those responsible at Celtic , that we are already into the serious side of the season , completely unprepared . Scandalous .

  13. I have said it so many times it’s boring, but it still needs to be said time and time again, we are a well run PLC, but we are a shambles of a club, the money that has been wasted over the years is a scandal, we had the chance to progress Scottish football into the modern era, we choose the 1690’s.

An utter disgrace and a total insult to the support.

  14. One nighty in Lisbon won’t celebrate a goal by Leigh Griff now.get real.we all make mistakes.you sound like a straight peg.love to see you sitting all depressed when the wee man bangs one in against the monkeys.get Aff yer horse

  15. Just watched ten minutes of the Sevco game. They looked pretty good (well, maybe not `pretty`) and Ryan Kent worries me. A very dangerous player.

The English commentator said that, to be fair, he had to mention that some Real players were not available. He then reeled off about twenty names :-)))

    BACKTOBASICS-GLASSHALFFULL

This is not one of the already written post match narratives you are probably correct have been already prepared.

I checked out Sevco for their first half. Their opposition is a young Madrid B team missing big names like Modric and Benzema and a dozen others. It does feature established internationals like Marcelo, Isco, Nacho, and Rodrigo. Sevco have completely dominated the first half, striking the bar and forcing the Madrid keeper into several saves. They are behind to a Rodrigo goal, a classic breakaway after a change of possession. Other than pick the ball out if the net, McGregor has been largely idle.

Not many surprises in the performance. Their new striker Sakalo is very fast, two footed, and looks sharp. Their free from Sheffield Utd is a big unit and has added a lot of bite to their midfield. He looks a better player than Arfield.

Unfortunately, for our game against them in a month, they look very organized, they defend as a unit, their goalkeeper and back four are far superior, and unless Ange performs a minor miracle, I think we will really struggle. For what it is worth, that is a non-rose tinted glasses assessment based on yesterday and half a game today.

  19. Exactly.the get Griffiths out brigade is embarrassing.he would be the first name on my team sheet tbh

  21. So how is he inferior.tell me?.he’s the best striker we have got.some roasters on here .inferior why ??.educate me c’mon??hh

  22. We really are dire if Griffiths is the first name on our team sheet.

Would not surprise me if he picks up an ‘injury’ soon and disappears for a few months.

Let’s start with his unprofessional attitude, showing up last season clearly unfit.

Complete disregard for himself as a professional footballer and for his team mates and supporters in what was our most important season in decades.
