Cautionary tale from Denmark

Midtjylland play their second league game of the season away to AaB Aalborg tomorrow evening, hoping to win their first points.  Aab finished seventh last term, so it is a game Midtjylland will feel they have to win to get their domestic campaign on track.

Celtic are free of competitive pressures this weekend, facing West Ham at home tomorrow, where we can give players still working on their fitness an hour, then rest them for the trip to Denmark.

There is plenty of confidence ahead of the second leg against Midtjylland after a solid performance on Tuesday night but the name Aalborg will cause many of us to flinch.  The then Danish champions travelled to Celtic Park in the 2008 Champions League group stage.  It is fair to say they could be the weakest team we faced at that level, but indecisive finishing, for some of the game against 10 men, and a missed Barry Robson penalty, meant the game finished 0-0.

Celtic bossed the return leg at Aab’s tiny stadium and Robson atoned for his penalty miss by giving the visitors a second half lead.

Here’s the thing about football.  You can think you are safe, then a deflected shot flies in from nowhere and a deflected cross hits a defender and allows a semi-professional outfit to beat Celtic to the Uefa Cup spot.

I hope we use every moment of our preparatory time tomorrow wisely.  Nothing can be taken for granted.

I’ve spent more than a week checking personal email daily without any offer of a Celtic ticket, 0 for 3 I believe. Had enough of it now, might as well be back at an office. What kind of a person reads personal emails daily?

Good luck to the Celts B today, my first experience of the Penny Cars Extravaganza. I’m taking the usual confidence from us playing only a quarter of Kilbride on this occasion.

Dalgleish ? can’t get over myself playing against him with his hun scarf

on, although he was younger than us, more to do with me than him.

And what about Petrov and so many others?

It’s not easy and knowing Paddy he’ll have a surprise or three.

    Good morning all. Beautiful morning.

Every once in a while, the Scottish MSM (or elements within) respond to the question

why should clubs bother having anything to do with them?

A typical response portrays the relationship as symbiotic.

In return for access – it is said – the SMSM promote the game, focus on the positives, and increase awareness of, and interest in, clubs …. thus providing benefit back to them.

An example of that symbiosis at work

Sionnaigh- left you a message yesterday morning, not even the courtesy of a reply.

  5. Headlines….Man City want Huge loan fee.for Itikura……..might be a reason for that…..its his last year on his contract runs out June 22… I’d imagine celtic if interested would take that into account……..personally I think he’d be a terrific holding mid ….with good cover for centre back as well…..get it done Celtic

  6. Missing a trick punting the Colts team out to Airdrie to play their home games.

Seeming the same arrangements will apply to the women’s team.

We should have taken the SG cash and rejigged our finances to build a new facility in the East End — 5K seats with two stands. One with the dressing rooms in it / the other being a basic unit with golf seats and a small roof.

We could have had a double header today with the WHU game at CP.

Another fine mess / failure PL has left us with.

We need more football — pity we are making progress for Airdrie.

  7. Apologies — Colts game against EK is an away game not a “home” game.

Location given as “Penny Cars Stadium” — not a clue before you ask.

  8. Double apologies — Penny Cars Stadium is the new name for the old “New Broomfield” in Airdrie.

It is a “home game” for us so we get to sell the tickets.

    Confused and then some.

I only wanted to find out the team — not fail at Geography.

    Currently — PL 1 – MM 0.

I am not a Dalglish fan – as frequently stated on here – but for the purposes of your exercise, he surely cannot be left out ha ha

  10. If you go on to YouTube you can freely listen to any song you want to hear.

That is why I find it hard to understand why SIONNAIGH spends half his day copying and pasting the myriad songs which he thinks might be of interest to everyone else!

I find it exasperating skipping by so many posts but, heyho, if that’s his joy in life, more power to his elbow!

    Hail! Hail!

  11. does anyone know if the colts or ladies teams are playing today at any stadiums anywhere , and what those stadiums are called, and how to get there, and do you need a mask ?

another short sighted disaster left by you know who.

  12. We are missing a trick by not broadcasting the Colts game.

More exposure generates more interest — as the actress said to the bishop.

  13. I hope we’re taking measures to prevent the likes of Hjelde and Anderson go to Leeds or anywhere else. We need to be a place where promising young players thrive. If they want to leave anyway, then cheerio. That said, we poach plenty of young talent from elsewhere.

I’m sure I’ve read that we will be showing some of them (girls team also).

  15. Stephen Friel on off the ball, speaks very well about celtic youth development.

Kieran was a concern all through with fitness and stamina issues.

    Forrest was the first.

Callum went to Notts County insisted by Neil, but he thought he was ready for celtic first team then. Watched him at county centre mid against Liverpool with grealish and callum ran the show,

    good listen

Amazing player even as a young lad, but for the purposes of my

exercise I think big Sutty would be the ideal team choice.

Then again, Macca although a complete nougat, was a brilliant

    leader of the line..

Only my opinion and I respect anyone who thinks differently.

I think I’m not alone in that respect.

Terry mac …sometimes he puts stuff on I’d never dream off …think some of his stuff is excellent…..hope he keeps doing it

  18. squire danaher on

Much as I can’t stand him as an individual, I don’t think anyone picking a post-1967 Celtic best XI can seriously justifying leaving out Dalglish.

I tried to avoid one season wonders which is why I passed over Macca (not strictly accurate but his heir wud wasted by the Page 3 Burd he’d shacked up wi at the time in London)

    Cheers and HH down under

  19. See celtic likely to lose another prospect in Hjelde. Shame but most of these kids dont give a monkeys about the cluns they play for and spare me the poor pathway bullshite, boys been here since 16 years old, played one year in academy team, moved on loan to first team in spl at 17, training with first team in pre-season and getting game time before reaches 18.

It seems clear that he was in the thoughts of the manager. If he signed up with us and at worst was loaned for another year to a premier league team that would be better pathway than development than playing under 23 football in england. The glamour and money on offer in england, germany, france, spain is just to much for most kids to turn down. Immediate gratification is the name of the game. Get as much as you can for Hjelde and get a 30% sell on clause in transfer similar to hickey etc.

The academy is clearly producing decent young players and for every Hjelde there will be a McGregor, forrest, welsh, KT, murray etc who will stick around and develop with us. Also we do same to other clubs so cant be to critical of other clubs.

Good to see shved moved on, now let’s move on the remaining deadwood and the wantaways.

  20. Melbourne Mick on

Yes his head was wasted, but as I said Sutty would be the mhan.

And yes I can seriously leave out Dalglish, nothing to do with the

fact he left his pal Barnsey to carry the can while he golfed to his

hearts content, or helped Minty carry on his corruption of

Scuddish fitba, or his idolisation of the scousers, no sir, I’ve nothing

    against Dalglish.

Don’t think Paddy has either? are you lurking Paddy?

Was it Jenny Blythe big Macca’s burd in London?

  22. CELTIC: Barkas; Taylor, Murray, Abada, Soro, Turnbull, Christie, Edouard, McGregor, Ralston, Welsh

Subs: Bain, Doohan, Bitton, Griffiths, Ajeti, Rogic, Bolingoli, Urhoghide, Connell, Shaw, Robertson, Forrest, Henderson, Montgomery, Hjelde.

  23. MM

Yes, I think that was her name. Well remembered. I couldn’t quite recall.

No doubts, Frank was equally forgetful sometimes

  24. Melbourne Mick on

What did you think of him as a player ?

on the football park of course 8-))

  25. Barkas gets the nod to start this afternoon as well as Murray. Interesting. Would suggest Murray and Welsh seen as starters for Wednesday and Barkas being given a(nother) chance.

  26. There are seasons in a players career where they just have their absolute best,

For me, that was 87/88 for Macca, He was just so influential game after game.

    Others ?

Henrik in 2001, Paul in 86,

  27. Ange, talked about confidence for Barkas, and I wonder if he speaks greek to him and feels he will come good.

would hlep if he just made some saves.

  28. Just looking at Dannys stats,

681 games for celtic, several seasons with over 50 games.

Unbelievable consistency, and came back from 2 injury and illness career threatening times.

Never votes scotland player of the year, how did that never happen.
