Cautious optimism with one weak spot

647

In days of yore Celtic would rattle nine goals past the Finnish champions on European Cup duty.  That was never going to be on the cards last night but there remains a clear gap in quality between the teams.  HJK Helsinki are no better than Hearts, but were clearly sharper.

The tie remains very much in the balance, a ‘Big Dan moment’, similar to what happened away to Sion last season, and the odds would stack heavily against Celtic progressing, and although HJK didn’t impress much, neither did Utrecht, who lost 2-0 at Celtic Park two years ago before wiping the floor with a disorganised Celtic a week later.

I have a few concerns.

Last season it worried me how dependent we had become on Charlie Mulgrew to create goals.  His delivery from the left back position, not to mention his runs to the back post, were significant in Celtic overcoming the early season deficit.

Today we are a few central defenders lighter, if not any worse off in that department, but without Charlie galloping down the wing we are immeasurably less potent.  Emilio is an able left back, but his performances are several degrees below his Player of the Year form and he is categorically not a goal creator.  A double jeopardy is that when Emilio is behind Georgios Samaras on the left, instead of the more defensively minded Joe Ledley, we seem to have a real weak point.

If we are to start with a lone striker and five in the middle next week we’ll need Charlie on the left.  This will stiffen up our weak spot and give HJK more to worry about.

The video moment for the players to study must surely be Georgios Samaras cross for the first Celtic goal.  In case you missed it, the cross evaded the first defender.  In this respect it was quite stunning and contrasted markedly to what was going on across on the right wing for most of the evening.

Early Player of the Year tip: Adam Matthews.  Usain Bolt must be relieved our man is not a sprinter almost as much as Victor Wanyama is relieved he’s a footballer.

Our three raffles end at 19:10 TONIGHT!  For the sum of only £1 you stand a chance of winning a painting of Henrik Larsson mid goal celebration, Scott Brown inventing the Broony or a print of our manager in his playing days.

It has never been easier or cheaper to contribute to the concept of what our club is all about, go buy a ticket.

Martin Chambers of the Ecuador Trust was in touch this morning.  He said, “If you are able to help, the money will be used to fund the Soup Kitchen that we run each day feeding 150 of the poorest children in the shanty town – kids who would otherwise go hungry.  Hope to hear from you soon” (he means you).

Feeding kids who would otherwise go hungry.  Where have you heard that idea before?

The four beneficiaries are; The Haven, Cancer Respite Centre, Blantyre, Oscar Knox Neuroblastoma Appeal, Martin Chambers Ecuador Trust and Aberdour Primary School Parents Association.

For £1 you can win:

A celebrating Henrik Larsson painting.
A painting of Scott Brown in classic pose.
A Neil Lennon print.

What are you waiting on, do it now, there are only a few hours left! And after you have clicked on ‘buy a ticket’, DON’T FORGET TO PAY, as some people have. Just like social taxes, paying for your raffle ticket is NOT optional!

    Ibleed….,

Financially supporting people I no longer have any trust in is not the kind of mhan I was brought up to be, integrity is all I have to offer and I am not giving that up for the sake of the old firm.

  2. The SFA has the Appellate Tribunal not the SPL, I cant see why anyone can object to an Independent Commission investigating DerHun,- what do you want them to do???/

  3. Larrybhoy on 2 August, 2012 at 19:46

In all honesty I cant see the SPL covering up anything.

From what I can gather this is the procedure that has to be followed in order to have a legally water tight case that wont be challenged in court by hun lawyers.

can you imagine the fall out if they are found guilty, have titles stripped then a hun lawyer gets them off on a technicality?

I’d rather the process took longer just so long as justice is done and is seen to be done.

  4. anche gli angeli on 2 August, 2012 at 19:57

Exactly. The SFA Appellate Tribunal will be the body to handle the appeal which the Huns are sure to make once the SPL Commission make their ruling.

  5. oldtim –

Glad to see you’re going tomorrow and looking forward to the pleasure of your company and the honour of buying you a couple of drinks.

  6. Canamalar,

who did you ask your questions to?

was it to CQN or to Celtic directly?,

just thinking that if you asked Celtic direct it may take

    time to answer you

  7. The Independent Panel will be presented with an open and shut case in respect of the existing of dual contracts for the players. It is not certain as to whether they have evidence of the illegal slush fund payments to Souness and Walter.

The key consideration will be the scale of the punishments and the precedents in relation to illegal player registrations are ominous for Sevco.

Mistaken registration documents has resulted in clubs being expelled from the Scottish cups, what to do with 11 years of false declarations?

If there is supporting evidence provided of the Directors and Managers with their noses in the trough then there is a clear picture built up of wilful cheating not just some admin error. If this is found then the following ought to happen:

    – all directors and mangers implicated will be banned sin die

    – all leagues and cups struck from the records

    – all flags to be returned

    – all cups to re-engraved

    – all leagues to be allocated to the runners-up

    – all cups to be awarded to the runners-up

    – all medals requested to be returned

    – SPL fines issued based on re-calculated zero place money, with this money proportionally re-allocated to the remaining teams.

    – File forwarded to UEFA for consideration on further penalties in European competition

    – File forwarded to SFL for considerate of League Cup penalties

    – 30 point league penalty for 10 years

This is the only way that keeps the beggars afloat, otherwise it should be curtains, however it seems that the Scottish establishment wants to keep them around , irrespective of the crime.

  8. hey guys…….non other than ‘alex thompson’ was a customer in my chippy today[nyorks]…he had a tribe of kids with him and a shipping order…gave me time to have a facsinating chat about his work on rangers fc for ch4..he says that the role of ‘john grieg’ in the rangers corruption is one that he really felt needed exposing….he was just back from syria yesterday..he still seemed facsinated by the rangers case and was happy to talk freely.still shocks him about the lack of interest in the english media…we also had a laugh about the ‘succulent lamb’ brigade like ‘triainor’…..,.i was buzzing talking to him for a good 20 minutes..i mentioned this site and thanked him for all his worked and told him to keep it coming…….

It’s obviously a personal decision you have to make.

However imo the money you pay goes to the club not any individuals specifically. Furthermore from what I can gather youre basing your assumptions on supposition and suspicion as opposed to any concrete facts

    Nice catch!

It’s hard believe but some stupid stupid hun fans want greig back.

wont be long before they remove his statue me thinks once all the ebt scandal comes out into public domain. stupid stupid huns dont believe their guilty of anything.

in saying that morals and huns just dont go

What with overlooking the fans calls for a review of kids season book prices along with the ridiculous cost to relocate within the stadium I can only suggest that Mr Lawwell gets out a bit more and sees how much the average fans disposable income is taking a hammering. The fans are screaming out for a reason to justify the massive commitment that is the cost of a season book. Get a player in and galvanise the support.

  13. I don’t think A.T. will be goin’ back to that chippy in a hurry…..then again I could have it all wrong about those pesky little orange critters….

I posted a team earlier that I think could get us through the tie next week.

Izzy was not in my line up as I think he was caught out on a number of occasions last night in a defensive sense.

I hope he plays on Saturday and builds up his match fitness, which is what he needs.

Next Wednesday however , we need a result to ensure we stay in the hunt for Champions League football , where we all want to be.

For that reason alone I don’t think he should play in Helsinki. I do want the wee man to get back to his former self, he is a great player, I just don’t think we can afford to accommodate his recovery in such a vital game.

  15. to be honest..he laughed off the threats he had from rangers media and fans..i believe working in war torn syria puts it into perspective…he seemed genuinley happy to talk …i dont think saying hes inmy town on holiday is unsafe in any way…i just hope he liked his fisn n chips..he will come back…he also gave a £3 tip which is not bad for a takeaway !…nice fellow

I reckon that a bargain Celtic have struck with the SFA and SPL is that they will not seek compensation as long as the wrong doing is investigated and punished in football terms AND the SFA clear out whoever granted Rangers uefa licences and provide measures to make sure it cannot happen again.

The latter is a must if any form of trust is to be restored and is an opportunity to good to miss and you can be sure Celtic know this.

  22. Liverpool score first thru 30 yarder from Downing but should have been 3 or 4 down after the hour mark. This ‘no name’ Belarus team must be sick as the proverbial parrot ! No pushovers in Europe anymore but a bit of class tells. Take note those playing on Wednesday in Helsinki

Part of the reason for the post was to exercise my own conscience after being part of the collective groan aimed at our frustrating Greek superstar in recent reasons. Everyone plays their part and we can’t expect perfection. I think we have a good team who played well last night.

On EBT’s – someone said Rangers for the last twelve months have been the joke with a million belly-laugh punchlines. Is it possible Oldco and Newco could be liquidated with titles stripped and another consortium then trying to get TRIco off the ground in the next few months? Not too far fetched to me…..

  28. MattE – I understand where you are coming from to an extent. There is a worry that Emilio is taking some time to get back to his exceptional level of performance. I just think Emilio playing well is good enough at LB for us. He and Matthews are outstanding attacking full backs in the Celtic tradition. My fear is that casual assumptions (Izzy can’t defend etc) are a wee bit entrenched now when I’m not convinced they have a basis in fact (cue the rush to talk about his positioning in LC final and at Inverness !) He makes the odd error but I am glad we agree he is a wonderful player to watch.

    Cheers and HH
