Celtic 0-1 Atletico Madrid

455

Celtic had the better of the opening 30 minutes against an accomplished Atletico Madrid team in this evening’s Europa League clash but after losing what will be considered a bad goal from a defensive perspective, were corralled by the visitors, who were content to tighten the game and play on the break.

Arda Turan’s blistering shot from outside the box should have been blocked, but Beram Kayal won this season’s Regi Blinker European Endeavour award and ducked out of the way, only a few yards in front of the helpless Fraser Forster, who did well to get a hand on the ball but could not stop it.

Celtic were a goal behind after 3 minutes in the corresponding fixture in Madrid and should have been behind inside 60 seconds when Eduardo Salvio was gifted a free header from 6 yards but he failed to hit the target.

Celtic soon settled with Georgios Samaras again proving effective in a wide-left midfield role.  Daniel Majstorovic headed a corner into the six yard box which Samaras knocked goal-wards but keeper Courtois blocked on the line.

Next Anthony Stokes found space on the left to cross for Samaras but he couldn’t keep his first-time shot from the edge of the area down as Celtic had Atletico on the back foot, however, the goal would settle the visitors and clearly spread some dissonance among the home team.

Neil Lennon lost Joe Ledley to a twisted ankle seven minutes from half time and changed tactics at half time when Victor Wanyama went off with a dead leg, sacrificing five in the middle for a 4-4-2  but chances were few in the second half as Atletico defended effectively.

Georgios Samaras, who ran tirelessly and threw himself into challenges with no shortage of bravery while playing with space to exploit on the left, looked uncomfortable in the latter part of the game when playing with Gary Hooper as a front pair.

Hooper had the ball in the net but was judged offside after Stokes knocked the ball onto him. Ki fired a 25-yard free-kick on target midway through the half forcing a fine save from Courtius before Fraser Forster made two excellent saves, one from a remarkable Diego free kick from a tight angle that was heading for the top corner and another when he stopped Juanfran.

Celtic laid siege to the Atletico goal for the final five minutes but could not find an opening.

Aye, surface indeed, as close to it as Hollywood is allowed to go.

Virgil would have been proud as he was able to write in conditions more freely conducive to his art (Arma virumque) despite the restrictions of having to do so for the dictator of an invasion centred empire. That’s how bad and how different it is now. We have less freedom to do so- the timternet being their only weakness that they’ll deal with soon enough by following China’s influence.

Fascism lives on in it’s new uniform.

Thank You m8, I should have made a comment at the time of the post.

I think Lammarr ambushed him, Rod done very well to keep his great act going with a smile on his face.

:)) Good mhan. I did a video with that as the soundtrack, exposing a wee teeny percentage of hunnery on video – it was enough for EMI to pull the plug though.

“Animals” must have been the first bit of serious music I listened to as a wean. Opened my eyes (and ears). Never looked back since.

You offer the point of view (which I hope a lot of us share) but how do we tackle it.

Ahm not talking about discussions or protest or violence cos none of em work.

How do you think we should tackle it?

What is the best case scenario for Rangers in your opinion now.

It sounds like Whyte is driving an old banger into the ground and ready to scrap it for nothing.

    ————————————————————————————————————

He is hard to figure out. He definitely plays to the gallery with soundbites, threats of legal action and idiotic corporate behaviour. I really don’t see much if any substance to him, and the information on him from people I know amounts to the same thing every time. Best avoided or at worst sup with a long spoon.

He cannot participate in a Newco, a succesful exit from administration seems highly improbable, therefore he is all about the short term.

Questions are bound to be asked given the bizarre behaviour. It all points to me to be setting a scenario where he expects an insolvency, is preparing for it, and will cut and run once he gets his turn on his short spell of ownership

I can’t see beyond a Newco. I believe it will play in the SPL, and the only issue for me is the penalty for entry. Forget talk about being stripped of titles, or paying financial penalties over an extended period. We are looking at a 2 or 3 year scenario with a points penalty of between 20 and 30 points a season. Thats what Celtic will lobby for. The club know a drop to Div 3 will not be supported by enough clubs, no matter how deserved. The nightmare scenario would be a one off minor points penalty. Scottish football is not a neutral environment. There are very few clubs who do not have a default position of preference to either half of Celtic or Rangers.

In my view Motherwell, Dunfermline, Inverness, Kilmarnock St Johnstone and St Mirren would happily apply no penalty at all to Rangers. They are by default firmly in Rangers camp. Aberdeen and Hibs are not in any camp. but would vote for fairness. They have no particular fondness for Rangers and their supporters despise them, which brings pressure on their boards. Hearts and Dundee Utd are lilely to change their position depending if the day has an S in it or not. Celtic WILL be very strong on appropriateness.

I don’t know the voting requirement to admit a NEWCO , however if it requires only 2 to vote against the Rangers Newco can expect a hefty multi year penalty. If it’s a simple majority, then they will be admitted and NO penalty applied in my view. If thats the case Celtic should take whatever legal action has a chance of success, and any legal action which would delay the process, even if the prospects for success were slim . Uefa,Fifa and the CAS should be engaged.

  6. And that is a Definite compliment just in case people think it is a slander.

The thing I want from Celtic is All sides of the Control mechanisms to Support Celtic.

I want right wingers and left wingers supporting Celtic.

Politicians are controlled money men/women, it is sickening but it is true.

Going Religious – Sinful nature, end of story, Ernie you cannae perfect the man.

    Back to the Celtic.

The more Praise to God Almighty, And I say this bashfully, then the more we will succeed. Praising God doesn’t happen in Celtic Park, it happens elsewhere. If something good happens thank God in your Mind, encourage others to Thank God. The Temple of God, from Bible scholars, is oneself. I would have to agree with their assessments.

Last person I spoke to about PF here in depth was the late but great Pablophanque.

He had tickets to see RW.

At the time, I nearly booked a couple but the price was crippling, about £300 for 2 tickets in Manchester (accomodation compulsary as part of the deal) – gutted.

Thank You for such a detailed response. I appreciate it. I will be happy if Rangers are hit with 3 years of points penalties and their lines of credit are what they are.

I know you have grown very frustrated with the events over the last few years but perhaps this was always the plan – drawing the total sting out of THEMS. I am just a wee worker who loves reading quality analysts like yourself and many others on this site.

Time to take back the things that are important.

The Red Indian Red Hand was always a bit suspect though. ;)

  12. That is a thoroughly depressing outlook.

Do Rangers, their followers and sympathisers think they can tear up the rule book with impunity?

What kind of message will be sent to the rest of Europe?

That we are a nation who flaunt our own and the football authorities’ rulebook?

That football in Scotland is run and ruled to benefit one club?

We will be a laughing stock, even in Italy.

We, the club and fans, will need to fight any kind of leg up for Rangers with all our might.

Or use it to gain our exit.

    Just a wee PS.

Why would there be a vote on readmittance?

The rules are laid out and as far as I can remember, were used against Airdrie, thank you Peat for the precedence, Livingston and Gretna.

It should be a matter of enforcing the promise Paul McBride extracted to ensure the rules were fairly applied in all instances.

  16. Rangers confirms Craig Whyte had company director ban

Craig Whyte’s disqualification was revealed in a BBC documentary

Rangers Football Club has confirmed its chairman and majority shareholder, Craig Whyte, was disqualified as a company director.

The club admitted Mr Whyte was disqualified for seven years, with the ban beginning 11 years ago.

The disqualification was revealed in a BBC Scotland documentary.

In a separate announcement, the club has revealed that its net debt for the most recent financial year was down from £27m to £14m.

Its turnover was also up by nearly £1m.

The disqualification announcement should have been made to the Plus stock exchange, on which Rangers shares are traded.

The figures are included in unaudited accounts published through the Plus exchange. They also show that net current liabilities have risen sharply, from £21.5m to £34.2m.

That appears to reflect the £49m tax bill which Rangers has been disputing through a tax tribunal procedure, and which could force the club into administration.

    ‘Dark cloud’

Mr Whyte’s statement, with the accounts, said turnover rose nearly £1m to £57.2m.

    Start Quote

With any change in ownership, there will be a change in approach, and I firmly believe the changes I have implemented will be in the longer-term interest of the club, which must always come first”

    Craig Whyte

    Rangers chairman

That was helped by extra income from European games, “although there was an overall reduction in season ticket sales, hospitality sales and sponsorship revenue”.

Net operating expenses rose by £3.6m to £47.5m, reflecting higher salary levels, increased European and fixture costs and inflation.

Proceeds from the sale of players increased in the year to June 2011 from £512,000 to £4.2m.

And after making a pre-tax profit of £4.2m last year, that fell to only £76,000.

In his statement, Mr Whyte said that the tax bill had been “a dark cloud hanging over the club for far too long”.

He went on: “Rangers has never been short of challenges in recent years and there is no question there are many challenges ahead for both the club and Scottish football in general”.

The Rangers chairman stressed that the club was no longer reliant on bank funding, since he took over the £18m debt held by Bank of Scotland.

He paid tribute to his predecessor Sir David Murray, as majority shareholder, and to former manager Walter Smith, saying his recent achievements on the pitch were “extraordinary by any standard” and set the seal on “a truly remarkable managerial career”.

“With any change in ownership, there will be a change in approach, and I firmly believe the changes I have implemented will be in the longer-term interest of the club, which must always come first,” Mr Whyte added.

  17. CELTIC director and former government minister Brian Wilson last night admitted he belted out IRA songs.

The former Ayrshire MP boasted he knew all the lyrics to Kevin Barry — a tribute to an Irish gunman executed by the British almost a century ago.

He also revealed he sang the ballad in Hillsborough Castle, the Queen’s official residence in Northern Ireland.

But the outspoken former politician also condemned fellow Hoops fans who voice chants saluting the Provisional IRA. In a newspaper article where he waded into the row over new anti-sectarian legislation, Mr Wilson said: “Let me be open with a voluntary confession for the Song Police.

“I know all the words to Kevin Barry and I have been heard to sing them.

“Indeed, I think the last time was in the drawing room of Hillsborough Castle, when the portrait of Lord Brookeborough glaring down at us made the temptation irresistible.

” ‘Another martyr for Old Ireland, another murder for the Crown’ and all that.”

In his article, Mr Wilson makes it clear he does not come from a Catholic background. However, he insists that supporting republicanism over monarchy, dreaming of a united Ireland and supporting Celtic were in his “DNA”.

Kevin Barry was 18 when he was hanged for his part in a fatal attack on British soldiers in Dublin in 1920.

Mr Wilson said of the song: “The reason I know the words is I am the product of youthful conditioning.

“As a rational adult, I quickly worked out there was nothing romantic about violence and grew wary of songs that glorified it.” He also said the Police, Public Order and Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act of 2006 already deals with people who chant vile songs. He went on: “If these acts of ‘stirring up hatred’ occur at football matches, they will result in criminal sentences.

“So that deals with misguided miscreants who shout ‘Ooh, ah up the RA’, though heaven knows what RA they are referring to when Martin McGuinness and the DUP are now the best of pals in a partitioned Ireland.”

Mr Wilson was yesterday asked to expand on his views but did not return our calls.

Celtic was also asked if Mr Wilson’s views were personal or represented board opinion. The club did not respond.

  18. Nice to be still in it

But we will never advance with our present strike force, who would struggle to score 20+ goals in the English championship, never mind against your athletico’s

  19. SydneyTim

I hope you are well, good to hear from you.

Scoring 20 goals in the 2nd tier league in England is very difficult if they played the same amount of games as the SPL.

Not a big Stokes fan but glad that Neil started with him last night rather than H88ps. Anthony ran his legs off in the first half for Celtic and more than justified being selected as the lone striker, I was always doubtful if he had that role in him at THAT level.

We are about to see H88ps DOMINATE the SPL in my opinion. ;)

And Stokesy will run him close for goals scored.
