Celtic 0-1 Atletico Madrid

455

Celtic had the better of the opening 30 minutes against an accomplished Atletico Madrid team in this evening’s Europa League clash but after losing what will be considered a bad goal from a defensive perspective, were corralled by the visitors, who were content to tighten the game and play on the break.

Arda Turan’s blistering shot from outside the box should have been blocked, but Beram Kayal won this season’s Regi Blinker European Endeavour award and ducked out of the way, only a few yards in front of the helpless Fraser Forster, who did well to get a hand on the ball but could not stop it.

Celtic were a goal behind after 3 minutes in the corresponding fixture in Madrid and should have been behind inside 60 seconds when Eduardo Salvio was gifted a free header from 6 yards but he failed to hit the target.

Celtic soon settled with Georgios Samaras again proving effective in a wide-left midfield role.  Daniel Majstorovic headed a corner into the six yard box which Samaras knocked goal-wards but keeper Courtois blocked on the line.

Next Anthony Stokes found space on the left to cross for Samaras but he couldn’t keep his first-time shot from the edge of the area down as Celtic had Atletico on the back foot, however, the goal would settle the visitors and clearly spread some dissonance among the home team.

Neil Lennon lost Joe Ledley to a twisted ankle seven minutes from half time and changed tactics at half time when Victor Wanyama went off with a dead leg, sacrificing five in the middle for a 4-4-2  but chances were few in the second half as Atletico defended effectively.

Georgios Samaras, who ran tirelessly and threw himself into challenges with no shortage of bravery while playing with space to exploit on the left, looked uncomfortable in the latter part of the game when playing with Gary Hooper as a front pair.

Hooper had the ball in the net but was judged offside after Stokes knocked the ball onto him. Ki fired a 25-yard free-kick on target midway through the half forcing a fine save from Courtius before Fraser Forster made two excellent saves, one from a remarkable Diego free kick from a tight angle that was heading for the top corner and another when he stopped Juanfran.

Celtic laid siege to the Atletico goal for the final five minutes but could not find an opening.

Not a good result. Not a bad result. If Celtic beat Udinese they are still in 4 competitions.

The Celtic we all know and love need to take every game seriously. I believe Lenny has the potential for greatness given time and resources. I think stability, hard work and team spirit are now the order of the day for Celtic. There better be a net gain and not a net loss in the January transfer window. On top of that I expect hunnery to be stepped up a gear against Celtic and Neil starting about now.

DJ Shadow rocks, had the privilege of seeing him. Wis shocked that he wis white!!

  5. i didnt think kayal bottled it for the goal.

imho he went to head the ball, but instead of heading it with his forehead.

he went to head it with the cranium i.e.the full head(maybe he thought he would get better contact with the ball).

this meant that his whole face was looking at the floor so he missjudged the flight of the ball.

also the conditions, the strike, the flight of the ball.

admitedly the player should have been closed down earlier, but i dont think you could fault kayal.

Or any of our team for that matter.good effort all round.

    we can only get better.

    hail hail.

At this point ah don’t care other than the fact it gives our bhoys self belief.

We all know the deal even before we were let back in tae the Europa that the sphell wis the title tae get.

By the way how far did M O’N get in his first season?

We have a young team that is being nurtured and should be told to remain focused on what matters right now:

    WINNING THE SPHELL TROPHY!!!!

Thks for the support and i thought tonight we were playin some good football first half wi sammi and VW running the show. I think some fans forget who we were up against but we matched them and over in Madrid i thought we controlled large parts of the game but alas ppl need to realise we havent got KOK ,Chrissy S, BBJ, Paul Lamberts etc etc anymore.

    Well I care.

The good thing about European games is nae hun refs. Reminds the players what they are up against in the SPL.

    Yes I agree. Title.Paramount. No 4iar.

Excellent analysis of events. I didn’t realise the result of the Rennes – Udinese game until we got in the car, shortbread were talking about Celtic needing to win in Udinese, more specifically Neil Lennon saying that Udinese would really attack Celtic from the start.

The wee man wanted to get closer to the Green Brigade and he loved it. They are Driving this club every bit as the Board of Directors are – this is how it Must be, I’ve said it before every Celtic fan is equally important. We usually arrive way before anyone else does and its very quiet but seeing the GB arrive at the same time was brilliant. A few loud bangs and brilliant flares in a darkened sky. The wee man was already captivated but this will get him even more energised about Celtic.

Celtic played very well for the first half hour but when the Spaniards got their goal, couldn’t really see it too well, they really did put in a masterclass in how to play the game.

You are totally correct in saying that this Celtic team is definitely improving, it is nights like tonight where they will learn so much more and it augurs Very Well for the future.

“Wanyama is a find. Here is an athlete who understands his position”

We have a £20 million pound player because of what you said.

The quadruple is still on and I reckon there will be a massive Celtic support over their in 2 weeks.

Tonight, despite us not getting what we wanted, is what Celtic is all about. Scotland is finished as a footballing country until it gets cleansed of its diseased club. Tonights game was every bit as important as Tannadice in a lot more ways than one.

Looking forward to see Neils Lions on Sunday and I hope Big Jim Tyre can get a wee draw at the ground he loved scoring in.

Didnae mean tae come aff like a pr**k but ah did think we played good the night.

Even still ah want (like ma fellow tims) that fecking title cos they are there tae be owned for decades tae come. Sweet sweet nectar when wae do!!!!

All ah asked fae the better half fir Christmas was Stone Roses tickets, it’s ALL ah want.

prob get a lynx set and some socks :(

  13. Margaret, My young son said tonight what a difference at not havin a scottish ref and he doesnt even know anything about the corrupt ways they have. The ref tonight got a couple of things wrong but cant complain as he gave us (rightful) fouls for pushing etc that go un-noticed in the SPL

  14. Even if Celtic go on holiday and come back in the new year to start again their league campaign Rangers wont get 4 in a row

    RFC are goosed

Motherwell are likely to be second

Rangers will do well to finish in the top six at the end of this season and thats without a 10 point deduction

I know its a bit early to celebrate count your chickens and all that

    RFC are fekked

    Hail Hail

Hard to believe I know but the truth is out there CSC

My young son once said “why do they bother showing up if they know they are going to get cheated”…he didnt grow up in Scotland

  18. Who would have thought those fivers are worth more than a bank full of borrowed tenners

How sweet our revenge when its honest money that comes up the winner

Hold yer breath another wee while its only a matter of time

  19. Vic Ajax – my youngest who started going to the games this season (taking over his older brothers seat) hated football until this year and he loves the atmosphere and songs. Thank You GB without them i know what the atmosphere can be like and i also know he wouldnt come back.

Ye what i was gonna say lol was if a 12 yr old can see the obvious with the refs well so must the Top men in our football structure but wonder why they dont Hmmmm.

Any way need to go and get tae ma bed

    KTF

  20. Ye Margaret the older u get the wiser you get. You soon realise how corrupt our gr8 wee country is and how we must stand up against it no matter what.

Just been told on facebook that one of our churches was broken into last night and they tried to torch it

Nigt all and thanks for the chat see u KTF

  21. Regarding the Ref, I thought he had quite a poor game, he should have booked the guy who scythed down James Forrest early on as he was heading right at goal. Mibbery is obvious, especially to a seasoned trained eye of a Celtic supporter, this ref just made a couple of decisions that were wrong calls.

    Margaret McGill

They were magnificent tonight, “The Bhoys in Green” stadium swing is just kind of purring with malicious intent at the moment. The 28th is the date that it is going to go nuclear. ;)

I know we all hope for poetic justice the type of justice where we see the rich man do his best to squeeze through the eye of the needle with his camel

What a sight that would be metaphorically speaking

We are watching RFC approaching the eye of the needle but they know they cant squeeze through and the camel has nae chance either

  23. Sometimes I stop doing what I do during the day and think ‘WOW, ahm ah glad ahm no them’.

It doesn’t happen often because like everyone of the Celtic persuasion we are defined by what we are not how to oppose what the neighbour does.

We are what we have always been: Good people, good times, good tims.

We are what they wish they were! Ah know you might think this crazy but we should pity them and give them guidance because they sure need it.

We will always be what we are because it’s always handed down no matter how much they try to filter it out.

They will always be the same because of the same reasons.

I am proud of my dual heritage, I am proud of my family, and I am proud of this extended family that once upon a time my Father inducted me into.

No matter the faith, class, sex, opinion… if you love the Celtic the we are all one.

I could go on ad nauseum but you know the story.

I love more than this club, I love the people that support it. At the end of the day we are not fans but supporters because we will always ‘support’ the club and not ‘fantasize’ about it (although we do that).

This club is bigger than you, me, and the PLC. This club is the blood, sweat and tears of everyone since the first Irish and non Irish built it.

    Never forget that.

I love Celtic and Celtic fans. GOD BLESS!

petec ..re the ref..I know what you are saying..remember Lubos Michel. However, there is a PERCEPTION of fairness. Thats the important thing. As for the GB I will not tolerate our bored detracting from them in any way.
