Celtic 0-1 Atletico Madrid

455

Celtic had the better of the opening 30 minutes against an accomplished Atletico Madrid team in this evening’s Europa League clash but after losing what will be considered a bad goal from a defensive perspective, were corralled by the visitors, who were content to tighten the game and play on the break.

Arda Turan’s blistering shot from outside the box should have been blocked, but Beram Kayal won this season’s Regi Blinker European Endeavour award and ducked out of the way, only a few yards in front of the helpless Fraser Forster, who did well to get a hand on the ball but could not stop it.

Celtic were a goal behind after 3 minutes in the corresponding fixture in Madrid and should have been behind inside 60 seconds when Eduardo Salvio was gifted a free header from 6 yards but he failed to hit the target.

Celtic soon settled with Georgios Samaras again proving effective in a wide-left midfield role.  Daniel Majstorovic headed a corner into the six yard box which Samaras knocked goal-wards but keeper Courtois blocked on the line.

Next Anthony Stokes found space on the left to cross for Samaras but he couldn’t keep his first-time shot from the edge of the area down as Celtic had Atletico on the back foot, however, the goal would settle the visitors and clearly spread some dissonance among the home team.

Neil Lennon lost Joe Ledley to a twisted ankle seven minutes from half time and changed tactics at half time when Victor Wanyama went off with a dead leg, sacrificing five in the middle for a 4-4-2  but chances were few in the second half as Atletico defended effectively.

Georgios Samaras, who ran tirelessly and threw himself into challenges with no shortage of bravery while playing with space to exploit on the left, looked uncomfortable in the latter part of the game when playing with Gary Hooper as a front pair.

Hooper had the ball in the net but was judged offside after Stokes knocked the ball onto him. Ki fired a 25-yard free-kick on target midway through the half forcing a fine save from Courtius before Fraser Forster made two excellent saves, one from a remarkable Diego free kick from a tight angle that was heading for the top corner and another when he stopped Juanfran.

Celtic laid siege to the Atletico goal for the final five minutes but could not find an opening.

I share your concerns about the Board not appreciating the GB. I hate (yes hate) the whole Police state that is enveloping us and if the Green Brigade is not protected, as long as it continues to be a force of Real Good For Celtic, then Celtic will drift away to oblivion.

We all have important roles to play, and discernment is definitely needed by Everyone on All sides. Honest and truthful people have nothing to fear. It is the liars and the deceivers who should be seriously concerned. The media are our enemy more than anything else.

  2. You feckers, playing music on a night of European football ! :((

Will forgive you though, as this songs belongs at the end of the 30th Nov after a few folk spent today (and months of preparation) trying to waken the rest of the blinded kakhole that is the UK up to what is happening before its’ sorry blind eyes.

The UK aka Great Britain has always been thus though – blind to it’s pivotal role in world evil.

Floyd is where the music began!!!!

  5. For a business that has no bank debt, it’s quite a feat that interest charges rose by 50% during the year.

Expect more of the same if Whyte manages to keep it going. Murray milked Rangers by providing services through his other business’. He could then claim to have never taken a salary. Whyte could do similar by charging at the highest level for providing cash.

Money lent rom BVI…..tax payable zero

    Anyway thats a sideshow.

Why bother with unaudited accounts? It meets the minimum requirement of plus markets, but merely flags up that for the first time since becoming a plc Rangers have been unable to provide a set of audited accounts within a 5 month period. The audited accounts will have to be provided to plus markets by the end of February or the shares will be suspended.

The shoddy announcement on Whytes ban, inaccurate and misleading, and the failure to provide audited accounts are very strong indicators of a man badly struggling to contain the worst news. The press release has all the hallmarks of being written specifically for the Daily Record reading end of the Rangers support. It smacks of a man who in the immortal words of Marine Colonel Nathan R Jessop ” can’t handle the truth”

As a Celtic supporter i’m coming round to the view that we should hope Whyte is in for the long haul. The comedy value is exceptional

What is the best case scenario for Rangers in your opinion now.

It sounds like Whyte is driving an old banger into the ground and ready to scrap it for nothing.

Ahm only playing this cos the Mexican woman who is the total half of me (guess whit ahm in love and she’s bought the tic hook line and sinker) is over there with her family in California.

Surprise tae me but the good ole Mexicans know about us ALOT!!!!

  9. Good performance tonight. We still lack a little guile, and Dan is still an accident waiting to happen, however a huge improvement from Braga and Sion. Going in the right direction.

Sammy was terrific, however I prefer him in away games. Maybe Kelvin Wilson and Loovens will be a decent partnership. Loovens has played well this year, and he has gained an attitude…always a good thing for a centre back. We still need another CB although I wouldn’t dive in and buy just for the sake in January. We can get through with what we have, unless an exceptional player comes up. No excuse though for not buying a proven CB in the summer though.

The squad is taking shape. Charlie has to be a CB other than emergency. He isn’t a left back. Matthews has to be the back up to Izzy, and Joe L the 3rd choice. Lustig and Matthews can fight it out for RB although it would be very harsh to drop Matthews on current form.

Striker is a dilemma. Keatings looked like he was going to be the new Charlie Nic before his injury. If he comes back good as new, he could be terrific for us.

Time to sell off the on loan brigade to create some space.
