Celtic 1-0 Inverness

797

Joe Ledley scored the only goal of the game as Celtic restored their four point lead at the top of the SPL but although the visitors didn’t force a save from Fraser Forster this was a tight encounter for most of the afternoon.

The opening minutes firmly belonged to Celtic.  Georgios Samaras had a first minute shot deflected wide and Victor Wanyama headed narrowly over from the resultant Charlie Mulgrew corner kick.  Inverness’ first venture up-field forced Mulgrew into an important interception on the edge of the area to deny Nick Ross.

The best move of the game resulted in the only goal.  Gary Hooper combined with Adam Matthews before James Forrest collected wide on the left.  The winger raced forward and fired the ball across the face of goal for Joe Ledley to meet it at the back post and knock the ball home.  Back post runs have been particularly profitable for Ledley this season.

Four minutes later Charlie Mulgrew worked the goalkeeper with a free kick from just outside the angle of the box but Ryan Esson turned the ball over.

At half time Celtic could have reflected that despite enjoying the vast majority of possession their lead remained narrow; twin strikers Georgios Samaras and Gary Hooper didn’t have much of an opening.

Early in the second half referee McLean had his first major decision of the day when Richie Foran wrestled Scott Brown to the ground, after play at stopped, with an arm around Brown’s neck.  The incident deserved a yellow card but Foran was already booked and the ref took no action.  Five minutes later Daniel Majstorovic ambled towards a ball played over his head but Inverness striker Jonny Hayes flew past the Celtic defender forcing Majstorovic into a sliding tackle five yards from his box.  Despite making clear contact with the ball, and no protests from Hayes, who continued to chase, the assistant referee indicated to the ref McLean that Majstorovic fouled.  McLean showed the Swedish central defender, who was the last man, a straight red card.

Inverness pressed forward and forced Celtic to defend deeply but the visitors were unable to create a genuine chance.  On 73 minutes an Adam Matthews free kick from near the corner flag was cutback to Ki, who mishit his shot, which appeared to be going out for a throw in but Georgios Samaras chased the lost cause with some effect.

Catching the ball on the line Samaras spun and darted past Williams, who, already on a yellow card, bundled the Celtic striker off the field.  The referee, perhaps mindful of his earlier trigger-happy moment with Majstorovic and failure to punish Foran, gave Williams a second yellow.

Back on an equal man-count Celtic were never again put under pressure although Hayes caught the defence napping to latch onto a 40 yard pass but fired over.

Jinky Samaras could have wrapped up the points late on with a mazy run but he was unable to convert.

Will be a close game…which might need a dodgy last minute penalty for us to win : -)

  3. Top of the morning to you all from a calm, mild, and misty-grey Fife.

Yesterday before setting off for the game I watched the first half of the Dunfermline game where Brian Winter gave Rangers every benefit he could in a sly sort of way that wasn’t too obvious except when he gave them the free-kick that led to their second goal. To say it was a disgraceful decision is an understatement.

The contrast at Celtic Park could not have been more stark.McLean and his assistants were shocking in their obvious bias against us. Charlie Richmond at 4th Official orchestrating a plan hatched in La Manga?

  4. The more I hear of terry butcher the more I believe his intelligence is, how can I put it, well let’s just call it ‘unfortunate’.

I don’t mind a stupid man, everyone has the right including butcher. What I find insufferable is a stupid man with a big mouth. Take this little pearl of wisdom –

“Samaras is involved in the incident that gets one of my players sent off again. I’m not blaming him, I’m just saying he was involved in the incident. You can draw your own conclusions from that,”

See, what he thinks he’s done here is sly use of innuendo to blame Samaras, but then he goes and ruins it by stating he doesn’t blame Samaras. He calls us to “draw our own conclusions”, after he’s already given us the conclusion. What a silly man.

What an absolutely idiotic thing for a manager to say. Watching the match last night on C67 I noticed very clearly the referee counting out to the ICT player the number of fouls he had committed and telling him “no more”. This was after his booking so he had absolutely no excuse. As far I also remember the player made one more foul that the ref let go before having to book him after hacking down Samaras.

His second booking was for persistent fouling and the video footage corroborates this.

  11. I don’t really care about any other football club other than the great Glasgow Celtic, but i cant help but make a couple of observations abbot the Man U v Liverpool confrontations.

Kenny Dalglish has taken the stance that under NO circumstances will he criticise one of his players publicly.

He is trying to build a siege mentality within his club. His interviews make me cringe. His “i am superior to you” attitude reeks of someone who is failing but doesn’t know how to cope with the pressure of failure.

His team have won on 10 of their 25 EPL fixtures this season.

He has wasted £70million,yes £70 million ,on his signing of Carroll ,Henderson and Downing, etc.

The man may pick up the League cup in England ,but for a club of Liverpools stature it’s not good enough.

Dalglish is as arrogant as they come.

    Now for Fergie.

He is a master at mind games.

He is a master at never criticising his own players, something which Dalglish is trying to copy.

He makes an ever so slight criticism of Evra, that allows him to put Dalglish in a compromising stance with regard’s thaw he handles Suarez.

His statement that Liverpool should get rid of Suarez because he has embarrassed the club is laughable.

Ryans Giggs slept with his owns brothers wife.

Wayne Rooney had sex with middle aged ,ugly .prostitutes.

Just what more would they need to do to bring disgrace upon them selves and Man U.

Fergie will win this battle with Dalglish ,but he shouldn’t.

Dalglish has too high an opinion of himself, and it will see him fail.

  14. Butcher is a clown with one eye still on a job at Ibrox.

His team has suffered some shocking decisions against the Huns yet he rarely reacts. He seems to be a bad loser only against Celtic and Argentina.

His comments about Samaras yesterday were stupid but no one will question him. What he said about Samaras will now be a fact.

Butcher my conclusions are that your player fouled persistently from the first minute and you are a big, stupid,Hun who wouldn’t dare say what you did to Sammy’ s face.

Totally agree exactly what i read into his comments, may i add that Scottish football is going nowhere with this in your face over physical professional pub football tactics with Sunday league standard of officiating, no doubt when Craig Levein fails to take the SFA XI into a major finals we will have the usual where are we going nonsense from the usual suspects in the red tops.

  16. Butcher is a tosser coming out and saying that about sammy, fact is his player got made to look stupid by sammy and was deservedly booked for a 2nd time. He knows fine well that some of the hun journos will try and spin it as same old “diving” samaras. It is very noticeable how angry he gets after we hump his group of highland and hatchet men yet whenever its rangers he’s graciousness personified.

He must be furious then with Johnny Hayes who’s pretty much backed up the Maj appeal by saying “he won the ball”. Is it me or does butcher have an anger problem? And to think they said our Lenny had one…..

  17. Liverpool / Everton ?

    The facts ——-

Everton FC was founded by Methodists [ as were many of the Football Clubs who founded the Football League ]

Liverpool FC was founded by Freemasons [ The English FA was formed after a meeting in a boozer called The Freemasons Arms ].

My experience – based on months of living in Liverpool/ regularly visiting Liverpool //socializing with people from Liverpool and having mates who are Liverpool /Everton season ticket holders.—-

Never encountered anyone who gave a hoot for that Catholic / Prod thing . Never encountered anyone who associated their club [ or the other one ] with a particular faith. No shortage of families where father supported one team and the sons the other etc..

The only hatred I have witnessed in Liverpool is the visceral hatred that both sets of supporters have for Manchester United. In my experience cultural life on Merseyside has none of the backward sectarian nonsense so sadly prevalent in Scotland.

    My experience !

Don’t think that Celtic the club can do much as it is impossible to prove bias, but if we as a support continue to put up with this level of crap from the S.F.A. refereeing fraternity we deserve everything we get.

I’m just glad Dalglish has nothing to do with Celtic. His comments and the club stance on the Suarez case are an embarrassment.

Suarez is turning into a sideshow that Dalglish can’t afford with the results this season. Some amount of money wasted on guff.

  20. the glorious balance sheet on

Terry Butcher is a complete and utter trumpet.

If his ragtag mob of hammer throwers and Vauxhall Conference rejects are playing Dunfermline in a meaningless end of season game and have an inconsequential goal disallowed in a routine 3-0 victory he goes completely mental and yaps on at length about refereeing standards after the game (despite the decision being of no consequence).

If his team are playing the likes of Motherwell or Hearts in a tight game and have a decision go against them then he goes apopletic with rage, chases referees at full time, and wonders aloud in post match interviews why referees won`t explain their decisions to him.

If his team plays Celtic he always invents refereeing decisions that have gone against his team and cost them the game. He plays up his sense of outrage by either refusing to see the media for 45 minutes afterwards or by making a show of sitting in the dug out in a pained manner – in either case drawing attention to his perceived sense of injustice and knowing full well his slimy media friends who lap up “passionate Terry” will go with the “Jammy Celtic get all the decisions” headlines.

If, however, his team have 2 goals disallowed at Ibrox, and are denied a clear penalty, decisions that are the difference between his team skelping Rangers in their own midden or getting beat, then he is Mr Philosophical, a model of serenity, a “Some you win, some you lose” kind of guy.

He is a transparent hypocrite and the biggest bore in Scottish football. He is forever rabbiting on about that chip shop in Auchterarder or about Diego Maradona`s handball in 1986.

He should take his temper tantrums, fish suppers, agricultural footballing philosophy, and Basingstoke Town standard hammer throwers off to the Ryman league. Managers like him are ruining Scottish football.

  21. Is Butcher guilty of bringing the game into disrepute through his snyde almost-accusation regarding Sami?

Great story isn’t it? His players repeatedly foul Sami and somehow it’s his fault for always being involved.

  22. The incomparable Whitney Houston

In the early hours of the next morning after Rangers clinched the title at Killie,i listened to Whitney and in a semi drunken state .I concluded that this song and one other were quite apt, when looking out how Lenny’s league season had ended.

  23. Clyde have been very clever ‘defending themselves’. Yesterday, I think, one of them said ‘we’re accused of being lazy but we’re bringing out new stories everyday’. This was when Darryll was saying he had another beauty of a story. I don’t think they are being accused of being lazy, they are being accused of not doing any investigation of cw, not a difficult task to unearth dirt there: of not doing any work relating to ebt/hmrc/Sir Murray’s legacy. This is no news to us but the thing is if you are a rank and file Rangers supporter, it’s no wonder you’d be complacent when you’re being fed cover ups and non news. Clyde, very clever at surviving in a market defined by majority/minority issues but not at journalism, we’ve people closer to home to thank for that.

My conclusion would be that Samaras is too skilful for his hammer throwers and they have to resort to kicking, pushing and sometimes even poking him in the eye!

Would be nice if Lennon takes the opportunity to calmly point this out to him in the press.

Butcher maybe should take anger management therapy.

You are right in saying that stupid people with big mouths are the most insufferable. I’d agree with that and say they are on a par with stupid people who do not realise that they are thick. Butcher seems to be both.

  26. If Butcher is trying to suggest that Sammi is responsible for his player(s) getting sent off, he needs to be taken to task for brining the game in to disrepute Sammi was persistently fouled yesterday, particularly by the CB. He should have been sent off a lot earlier. Fouling Sammi is the only way Butcher knows of stopping him. Disgraceful nonsense from a manager.
