Celtic 1-0 Inverness

797

Joe Ledley scored the only goal of the game as Celtic restored their four point lead at the top of the SPL but although the visitors didn’t force a save from Fraser Forster this was a tight encounter for most of the afternoon.

The opening minutes firmly belonged to Celtic.  Georgios Samaras had a first minute shot deflected wide and Victor Wanyama headed narrowly over from the resultant Charlie Mulgrew corner kick.  Inverness’ first venture up-field forced Mulgrew into an important interception on the edge of the area to deny Nick Ross.

The best move of the game resulted in the only goal.  Gary Hooper combined with Adam Matthews before James Forrest collected wide on the left.  The winger raced forward and fired the ball across the face of goal for Joe Ledley to meet it at the back post and knock the ball home.  Back post runs have been particularly profitable for Ledley this season.

Four minutes later Charlie Mulgrew worked the goalkeeper with a free kick from just outside the angle of the box but Ryan Esson turned the ball over.

At half time Celtic could have reflected that despite enjoying the vast majority of possession their lead remained narrow; twin strikers Georgios Samaras and Gary Hooper didn’t have much of an opening.

Early in the second half referee McLean had his first major decision of the day when Richie Foran wrestled Scott Brown to the ground, after play at stopped, with an arm around Brown’s neck.  The incident deserved a yellow card but Foran was already booked and the ref took no action.  Five minutes later Daniel Majstorovic ambled towards a ball played over his head but Inverness striker Jonny Hayes flew past the Celtic defender forcing Majstorovic into a sliding tackle five yards from his box.  Despite making clear contact with the ball, and no protests from Hayes, who continued to chase, the assistant referee indicated to the ref McLean that Majstorovic fouled.  McLean showed the Swedish central defender, who was the last man, a straight red card.

Inverness pressed forward and forced Celtic to defend deeply but the visitors were unable to create a genuine chance.  On 73 minutes an Adam Matthews free kick from near the corner flag was cutback to Ki, who mishit his shot, which appeared to be going out for a throw in but Georgios Samaras chased the lost cause with some effect.

Catching the ball on the line Samaras spun and darted past Williams, who, already on a yellow card, bundled the Celtic striker off the field.  The referee, perhaps mindful of his earlier trigger-happy moment with Majstorovic and failure to punish Foran, gave Williams a second yellow.

Back on an equal man-count Celtic were never again put under pressure although Hayes caught the defence napping to latch onto a 40 yard pass but fired over.

Jinky Samaras could have wrapped up the points late on with a mazy run but he was unable to convert.

I agree with you. As much as I have a lot of time for King Kenny, he has shown himself to be out of touch regarding Suarez and Evra. Sure you want your manager to back your player but when found guilty the best thing for all to do would have been for Kenny to apologise to Evra on behalf of Liverpool and for Suarez to apologise. Even if he didn’t feel he did anything wrong his apology could have been worded in such a way as to say that he was unaware that what he had done could have caused offence but having seen what happened he apologises unreservadely and says it will never happen again.

I think everyone at that stage would have just let things go. For Liverpool to continue to back him was a stupid decision that has backfired on them big time.

Scotland star David Goodwillie’s interview on rape claim set to be probed

Feb 12 2012 Exclusive by Marion Scott

    david goodwillie Image 1

A WOMAN who accused Scotland star David Goodwillie of rape yesterday demanded to know how he appears to know details of a private meeting she had with

    prosecutors.

The 24-year-old mum says the footballer, who gave a newspaper interview yesterday to deny the allegations, appears to know details of a discussion she had with officials.

He told the newspaper she denied sending a text message before the alleged attack and said it must have been sent by Goodwillie or his friend.

But the woman says she only ever revealed that in a private conversation at the Crown Office and it was not included in her police statements.

She said: “As far as I remember, those details were not given to the police but Goodwillie or his legal team appear to have been told my reaction to a text message made on my mobile phone. It is now being used to try to discredit me.”

She has asked her lawyer to contact Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland and ask for an explanation.

Scotland and Blackburn Rovers striker Goodwillie, 22, was charged with rape in a flat in Armadale, West Lothian, on January 2, 2011, following a night out in Bathgate.

The woman who woke up in the flat alone was stunned when she discovered that she had sex with two men.

She says she has no recollection of it and did not consent.

She later passed a lie detector test when polygraph experts asked her if her police statements were truthful.

Goodwillie has always denied doing anything wrong.

Despite the charge being dropped, the woman was awarded £11,000 compensation by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.

Top QC Derek Ogg, head of the National Sex Crimes Unit at the time, publicly questioned her compensation award.

He said: “Had I been contacted, I would have told them it had been my recommendation not to proceed with the case.

“It had been independently assessed by the most senior prosecutors in the country before a decision was taken by the Lord Advocate due to the high-profile nature of the case.”

to me Dalglish look an embarrassed man last night

twice he has backed Suarez and twice Suarez has made a James Hunt of him – the t-shirts thing..then suarez admits to calling Evra a Nigger 7 times

then at the SSN press thing on Friday he was asked will they shake hands? he said definatley then Suarez does that to him

I think Liverpool FC have made themselves look like laughing stocks over the whole thing, and if it comes from the main man seen to be backing Suarez (Dalglish himself) then you get more racist incidents at Anfield – the racial abuse of the oldham player at anfield and the racial abuse of Evra again at anfield

Liverpool fans and liverpool FC have backed themselves into a corner now

and Fergie is calling them out on it now

I understand why Kenny is doing what he is doing, hes trying to protect his players and his club,,do i agree with what he is doing,,,no i dont!!!

But Ferguson has an absolute cheek,,,he has no morals as a manager or as a player,,,he would do anything to win,,,yet he is giving advice to Liverpool Football Club about sacking one of there players,,,unbelievable stuff from Fergie!!

    Ferdinand-drugs cheat

Rooney-pays for sex with elderly hookers

Cantona-assaults a fan in the stand(i actually think Eric was right to do what he did lol)

Keane-purposely waited months to get fit to injure an opponent

I could go on,,,bottom line is Suarez and Evra dont like each other,,,,nothing will change this fact,,,time to move on and play the game!!!

    Hail hail

  9. antrimkev at 13:38

Well Ferguson is a clever man and has done nothing wrong in this situation at all. Would be interesting to see how he would have dealt with it had the situation been reversed. I don’t think he would have let things get this far.

  10. @ibleedgreenandwhite1 agree on your comments re. Suarez / Evra. Suarez was wrong. Period. Liverpool and KD have consistently made poor decisions since this began, t-shirts being the worse imo. In my opinion, the inconsistent application of context by the “independent panel” when looking at what was said by Suarez and Evra would have many up in arms if a similar situation occurred in Scotland. Yesterday was a debacle, and all involved are culpable. The media will run with this because those involved continue to give them reasons to do so.

but he has played a blinder here – everybody in the world knows that Suarez racially abused Evra – Liverpool FC, Dalglish and the fans are being seen the world over to be backing a racist

I complained about it at the time.

    He was an utter embarrassment.

Kenny Dalglish is only interested in his own ego.

He has far too high an opinion of his own judgement of a player .He has wasted tens of millions. As for his judgement on giving John Barnes the Celtic managers job.It was ruinous.

He is also a judas in my eyes.

Only a wee while prior to talking over his “director o fitba” role at Celtic he was donning a Rangers blazer and club tie ,and signing Seb Rozental for Rangers.

Kenny Dalglish great Celtic player, but very badly let down by the board of Liverpool Football Club who should have protected him from the media, and the racism row, where he is clearly out of his depth.

Sharp witted and street wise football man, but the lack of direction from the club and it’s owners of how badly they misjudged the matter has left Kenny as a patsy.

The club are to blame, but it’s a complicated case, with some justifiable grievance where an English player has been treated very differently, on an identical charge.

  18. Why is it most subjects can be discussed apart from the merits or otherwise of Celtic players

  26. Guys I never came on to knock KW or DM, one of them may come good and the other may or may not sign a new contract in the Summer. My point was more to do with having a consistent defence and not chop & change every week, this is what happened at the begining of the season.

I want CM to be the constant CH, others may come and go, he is the organiser. Yesterday CM once and JK twice denied shots in the box in the first half, both centres were posted missing on many occasions yesterday. Neither knew who was last man, neither did anyone else in the team. Muldini is always last man, the defence know this, the midfield know this.
