Celtic 1-0 Motherwell

733

Motherwell fought tenaciously for most of the game at Celtic Park this afternoon but a momentary lapse was all that Georgios Samaras and Gary Hooper needed to settle the contest.  Celtic moved an astonishing 23 points clear at the top of the table and are odds on favourite to become champions before the next return to Celtic Park.

Samaras was first to show after 9 minutes when he latched onto a Matthews flick but Darren Randolph was quick off his line to block.  Player of the Year elect, Charlie Mulgrew, then jinked past a defender before slipping the ball to Samaras.  The Greek’s shot was block and Mulgrew blasted the rebound wide.  Randolph then saved well after Samaras shot from inside the D.

While Celtic always looked dangerous, Motherwell were in no mood to concede, so the goal was surprising in its simplicity.  Adam Matthews fired a throw-in to Samaras, who chested the ball into the path of unmarked Gary Hooper.  Hooper put his laces through the ball from a narrow angle to give Randolph no chance.

Samaras, Hooper and Forrest all had chances to finish the game off but the second goal never arrived.

Good defences are a lot harder to quantify than poor defences.  Today Celtic strolled through the game at the back.  No one was stretched and Fraser Forster didn’t have a save to make until the 77th minute.

  1. Not a bag game today, the mothers competed well, just so glad we beat them and the mullett haired fud of a manager.

Thought we looked flat at times, and the crowd was pretty quiet compared to recent weeks. Think we missed Broony, he seems to be able to lift others around him and sets a higher tempo that we saw today. Delighted with the 3 points.

Great fun in the crowd with the guys who brought the parcels to pass around, although some old guy was not happy when it rattled him on the back of the head.

Heard a few people talking about the call from Tony from Croftfoot regarding the EBTs

  2. Just listned to Tony on your call.

Good points and fair play to Jabba and uncle Tom, they never interupted, and in the main agreed that it should be investigated.

Phil said on BTW that he would be getting info from said Tony later in the week, and would have much more stuff to get his teeth into.

You never know, the likes of RC Ogilvie, Bain, Peat might yet have a case to answer, we all know they do, just have to convince the hacks with the megaphones.

Maybe, just maybe, we might end up with a semblence of a level playing field.

Good result today and I thought Motherwell put in a good performance.

Have to say though that the players looked tired at times. That’s a worry, but having such a large squad will help us cope. We need to help the key players build their energy levels for the final push, points gap or not. :)

Still can’t believe some fans. There was a couple of guys ready to moan everytime Sammi made a mistake. I thought he had a good game and the layoff for Hoops goal from a pace cross, was excellent.

Was looking right at the incident, from the LL, between McCall and the 4th official and I have to say it looked like a bit of banter to me.

Well fans singing Champions League when rangers die was very funny. :)

  4. Were there any “there’ll be lateral moment when R*ngers die” chants today”? Nearly drooned masel drinking ma coffee when I heard of that one for the first time.

    “SFTB

Never thought i’d say this but

    Cha is no Didier.

    Remember Ajax and Stuggart.”

I said the same thing. Agathe, at his best (Stuttgart & Ajax) was a far superior player. Paul Telfer got criticised for not being Agathe. Cha gets criticised for not being Agathe. Agathe, in the time before he learned to slow down just before crossing, was also criticised for not being the Agathe we remember now.

I don’t see the need for a scapegoat. Cha did little wrong today and put in a very good cross in his short period of play. He was out of form on Wednesday and still made two great penalty box tackles to prevent Fraser Forster from having to make a save.

I heard Ki get unjust criticism today also, after a great performance on Wednesday. Ki’s performance today was fine but not great. Why that gets you criticised is beyond me.

According to Phil you are, he was live on BTW earlier, and he said Tony was a friend and was going to pass on more info to him next week, sort of confirms Tony is kosher.

Tony was like Poirot; calm, precise and unassaiable. Neither Jabba nor English had the length of him. Reading RTC, there’s much more to come!

  11. I remember Sir Awex praising Petrov after a Villa game, saying something along the lines of “I never really understood what he offered to a team before”. Ki strikes me as a similar type, in that it may not always be obvious what he brings to the team, but I suspect you have to play beside him to appreciate it fully.

got involved in a typical pub debate today.

You know, the type of argument that gets you all nostalgic, especially supporting CFC where we are all old enough to remember Lisbon. Anyway, the topic was…’who’s the best out and out goal scorer/poacher/finisher/No.9 we have ever had.

I’ll cut out some of the brain work for you and put The King (Henrik Larsson) at Numero Uno.

I’m taking the liberty to leave Dalglish our because he was never a CF. (he was too good)

    Anyway, my top 5 are:

    1. Henrik Larsson

    2. Joe McBride

    3. Jorge Cadete

    4. Charlie Nicholas

    5. Frank McAvennie.

Paddy, agree with you totally. RFC are caught up in the middle of a perfect storm because of the inaction of the media. The media are reaping what they have sowed.

My first view of Celtic .League Cup final. Ranglers overwhelming favourites and they did not except defeat like gentlemen.

Celtic had to cut short the lap-of-honour and run for their lives as the huns invaded the pitch.

It was mayhem around me in the mixed enclosure .

Vastly outnumbered Celtic fans getting attacked all around and outside making our way to the station was more really bad scenes of violence .

I always managed to get away from Hampden safely, but Celtic Park was another story.I still remember ,as a young lad leaving the Celtic end to be greeted by a hail of bottles from the railway bridge .

The crazy thing is that you accepted that as ” normal.”

Starting to feel a bit nostalgic.
