Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen

624

Celtic struggled for much of the afternoon against Aberdeen but a second half goal from Charlie Mulgrew secured the win.  The home team opened well and had a patience about their play which prevented Aberdeen from seeing much of the ball.

Aberdeen had the best chance in the opening stages of the game when Fraser Fyvie crossed from the left but Fraser Forster did very well to intercept an awkward cross under pressure.  Celtic soon regained control and profited after 17 minutes when Beram Kayal found Gary Hooper, who squared to Ki in space.  The Korean midfielder shot low and hard; Aberdeen keeper David Gonzalez could only slow its progress into the net.

Glenn Loovens, who put in a solid shift in Rennes on Thursday and opened well today, retired injured immediately after the goal, giving Daniel Majstorovic a return to the team.

Aberdeen, who lost by 9 goals in the corresponding fixture last season, slowly played their way back into the game as Celtic perceivably wilted.  The early fluency from Celtic was clearly absent as the second half got underway.  Anthony Stokes was combative up front but struggled to link with Gary Hooper, who is clearly playing below his best.

Ryan Jack drew Aberdeen level just before the hour mark when he jinked past Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama, and shot into Forster’s bottom right corner.

Celtic then realised they were in a game and applied themselves with greater effect, forcing Aberdeen to defend four consecutive corners within minutes of drawing level, but without a cutting edge up front, they failed to work Gonzalez.

With 20 minutes remaining Neil Lennon recalled Paddy McCourt from a lengthy period out of the team but before Paddy could work his magic Celtic were ahead.  Majstorovic knocked a free kick onto Charlie Mulgrew who took a touch before firing high into the net.

McCourt was an effective relief on an uninspiring game and clipped the ball narrowly wide after one of his trademark runs, proving beyond any doubt that he possesses unique abilities.

With 10 minutes remaining referee, Stevie O’Reilly, who has having a poor game, ordered off Ryan Jack for a second bookable offence.  The Aberdeen goal-scorer will miss next weekend’s game against Rangers.

Aberdeen’s 10 men caused Celtic a few anxious moments in the final minute of the game but could not find a way past Forster.

  1. Morning,

Just a wee visit. Wondering if the performance at Ibrox and Tynecastle gives Celtic sufficient grounds to tender resignation from the SPL/league. We operate in a league where clubs don’t pay wages, don’t pay tax bills, don’t adhere to media commitments so undermine collective bargaining agreements (meaning there is a real potential for even further pressure on our earning potential), another club has already been through administration and serious concerns exist at three others (Rangers, Killie and Utd).

If there was an exit strategy, surely the failure of 3 clubs in the league to meet the rules is a good starting point for us.

Not convinced there is an exit strategy, mind you.

    Randoms regarding the team;

I’m a little more heartened after a bit of distance from the Killie fixture. Foster is impressing me, although he’ll need to endure the Caldwell/Sammi treatment from the non-fans.

With respect to Cha, I don’t think he’s good enough. He’s like another Paddy. I’ve no objection to us taking a punt on incimplete pro’s, but, let’s not labour the issue, if they don’t have what it takes to become a part of the team, then they probably shouldn’t be a part of the squad. Sadly Cha cannot be a regular in our team – he lacks the football sense to go with his athleticism.

Lennon needs to show the strength Mowbray didn’t have and ignore the boo bhoys. There are positives in amongst everything and they are Lennon’s plus points. He needs to remind himself of these first and then he’ll be better placed to remind the players… seems, sometimes, like Lennon is too close to the mood of the fans, to the teams detriment.

I’m slightly re-assessing our position, based largely on the comments of the Rennes coach. Lennon may well have created a team to play a passing game, and found his confidence in his strategy and the players undermined over the summer and the start of this season. There remain obvious confusions, but, at heart if this was his plan then I’m willing to support it.

I’d dearly like Neil Lennon to support himself and his strategy more though. If he fails to do this, then he’ll lose continue to lose the confidence of the fans. Tell me that you’re growing a brighter future for Celtic and that this squad represents the starting point and I’ll forgive the blips – everyone at CP is learning right now. Lennon seems to have forgotten this.

My previously expressed doubts remain, but only because the man himself has not sounded like he believes in himself. That belief is critical. His tone and language will play a huge part in our short term future, his future and these players futureszs

Yeah mate, Ive been advocating that for yonks now and suggested we getinto some “private ” European league which is outwith the control of Eufa/FIFA. But, we need like minded/lateral thinking clubs in Europe to join us.

Week in, week out, season in, season out it;s the same old crap, what can we do??

    Help

Also quite astonishing is the fact that most company/city frauds are committed by people who don’t live in Wandsworth/Lewisham etc. (I understand that Motherwell is a hotbed for such activity) ;-)

What has myself and friends scratching our heads is the ridiculous level of subservience (Scott Brown excepted) displayed to the media by all at Celtic

    Perfect example yesterday

RC yesterday after the match, Keevins compliments Neil Lennon on his gentleman and polite approach to getting slaughtered by the media, indeed Keevins managed in a sentence to go from a compliment to rubbishing the team and the manager

The R*ngers documentary summed it up perfectly – their former Chairman trys to curry favour with the support by saying when he was being pushed out by Whyte “No S*rrender”.

That’s the words of their former most senior director going out on national TV

  9. DBBIA,

You were asking where we might go? If Sion win their case, wouldn’t it be curtains for UEFA and we might be able to join with other clubs in some sort of breakaway?

Apart from the Beeb’s evidence of potential criminal shenanigans on his part, which is shocking, I thought the most interesting factoid was this one:

Mr Whyte moved to Monaco for several years around 2000, following his disqualification and the demise of 24 companies in which he was involved.

Sorry Bobby loved MON and WGS attitude and manner of dealing with a hostile media, treat them mean

Neil is his own man, i dont understand his approach to answering the media, it is IMO naive and very counter productive

I have been in many dressing rooms in my life Bobby and certainly understand why players would be unhappy

Best MON story to illustrate my point

Stan (bad boy) Collymore was on Radio 5 many moons ago talking about MON as his choice for his personal top manager

Why? Well Stan loved how any issues that arose whether on of off the field, MON dealt with the player first and then kept all details private

    I agree

  16. http://www.scotzine.com/2011/10/aberdeen-manager-craig-brown-questions-jack-booking-but-misses-mulgrews/?

Craig Brown’s comments are a disgrace. Just because he was looking away (doubtless in rage) he didn’t see it and as he was on the BBC last night and they didn’t show it he thinks he can put a bad light on Celtic.

    Pathetic wee man.

Now I wonder how he will react WHEN not IF, WHEN Rangers get their “honest mistakes” next week? Well we all know the answer to that.

The other week Skacel and the whole Hearts team runs off the park with Skacel on a yellow and Craig Thomson – the man who told Kris Commons he had no choice in the 3-0 game – did nothing. A red card which could have changed that game.

    Disgraceful.

I know where you are coming from.

I’m 41 and I have high standards of what I expect players who where the hoops to achieve. If they are not good enough, it is not their fault but their managers fault for picking them, but I will never accept anything less than 100% commitment while on the field, in training and looking after the tools of their trade (their body)!

    Re; Jury Selection..

    Very interesting Article..

I had a Trial at the Supreme Court last Year.. A 13 Day Trial.. Without going into Details the Jurys Verdict was in Four Parts..the Jury Foreman Stood up to Read Verdict.. The Guy Looked Arabic.. His English was Basic to put it Mildly..I was on the Stand for 4 Days so You can imagine how much of My Scottish accent he Understood.. Part 4 of the Verdict he Obviously read out wrong way Round.. The Judge gave him 4 Chances to change what he Read out.. Other Jurers were whispering in his Ear.. He basically froze and Stuck to His Words.. The Judges Hammer went Down and that was that.. Absolutely Shocking.. Thank the Lord it Wasn’t a Murder Trial..

As the Article Says.. There should be More of a Process..

We Obviously appealed as Did the Other Side.. Also you can Imagine the Cost of it all..

Sorry if that Sounded like a Rant..

The referee had a shocker, Aberdeen with a minuscule budget have went down the road of collecting a professional Pub team under Brown and Knox

They will defend them with lies and spin

Its the referee performance we should be targeting, i hope Regan got a very irate call from our CEO this morning demanding to know the contents of the supervisors report from Saturday

    Uefa ? ——

Uefa are unravelling. – Stupidity , arrogance and incompetence .

They have made a total ass of the Sion case . Last week’s Swiss court appearance featured Platini and Infantino contradicting each other and produced the astonishing claim from Platini that he knew next to nothing about the Sion case — Having said that -he was then unable to explain how he had been able to hold Media Conferences in which he vehemently stated that Sion should be banned . .

    In addition to the Sion farce there is also the issue as to whether Inter had the right to participate in this season’s Uefa Champions League . Uefa are currently trying to wriggle off that hook by claiming that any involvement that Inter might have had in ” Calciopoli ” is a matter for the Italian FA to sort out —” We don’t have the right to interfere in the processes of National Associations ” —– said Platini ——— Strange then that Uefa are trying to get heavy with the Swiss FA over its’ refusal to bar Sion from participating in Swiss football .[ whilst they continue to field players ” banned ” by Uefa }

    They are unravelling-

  22. Parkheadcumsalford- curtains for UEFA?

For all their faults I hope not.

Look what happened to boxing; there used to be 8 world champs; now there’s 800, thanks to the profusion of titles under the alphabet soup of ‘governing’ bodies.

  24. CultsBhoy hates being 2nd on

Recurring observation from me .. Applied a bit wider:

How many seasons do players deserve to stake their claim?

I always feel 2 is the right answer. A season to bed in and a season to establish themselves. I don’t recall too many players who have flunked first 2 seasons and then set the heather on fire from Season 3 onwards.. Doubtless some CQN ers will give me names but these are surely the exception rather than the rule.

How long for a Manager? How long for a CEO?

I’d give both 2 seasons as well.

On that basis.. We keep faith with Lenny until May.

We wave bye bye to Lawwell.

Thank you and goodbye to quite a few players..?
