Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen

624

Celtic struggled for much of the afternoon against Aberdeen but a second half goal from Charlie Mulgrew secured the win.  The home team opened well and had a patience about their play which prevented Aberdeen from seeing much of the ball.

Aberdeen had the best chance in the opening stages of the game when Fraser Fyvie crossed from the left but Fraser Forster did very well to intercept an awkward cross under pressure.  Celtic soon regained control and profited after 17 minutes when Beram Kayal found Gary Hooper, who squared to Ki in space.  The Korean midfielder shot low and hard; Aberdeen keeper David Gonzalez could only slow its progress into the net.

Glenn Loovens, who put in a solid shift in Rennes on Thursday and opened well today, retired injured immediately after the goal, giving Daniel Majstorovic a return to the team.

Aberdeen, who lost by 9 goals in the corresponding fixture last season, slowly played their way back into the game as Celtic perceivably wilted.  The early fluency from Celtic was clearly absent as the second half got underway.  Anthony Stokes was combative up front but struggled to link with Gary Hooper, who is clearly playing below his best.

Ryan Jack drew Aberdeen level just before the hour mark when he jinked past Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama, and shot into Forster’s bottom right corner.

Celtic then realised they were in a game and applied themselves with greater effect, forcing Aberdeen to defend four consecutive corners within minutes of drawing level, but without a cutting edge up front, they failed to work Gonzalez.

With 20 minutes remaining Neil Lennon recalled Paddy McCourt from a lengthy period out of the team but before Paddy could work his magic Celtic were ahead.  Majstorovic knocked a free kick onto Charlie Mulgrew who took a touch before firing high into the net.

McCourt was an effective relief on an uninspiring game and clipped the ball narrowly wide after one of his trademark runs, proving beyond any doubt that he possesses unique abilities.

With 10 minutes remaining referee, Stevie O’Reilly, who has having a poor game, ordered off Ryan Jack for a second bookable offence.  The Aberdeen goal-scorer will miss next weekend’s game against Rangers.

Aberdeen’s 10 men caused Celtic a few anxious moments in the final minute of the game but could not find a way past Forster.

  1. levante miss sitter,

Agree with most posters on Wanyama, I def think he’s got something and can protect the Defence, but am I the only one who thinks that he cannot pass the ball??? Great at breaking up the play though.

My Midfield would consist of Brown,Ledley, Kayal and Commons when all is well.

    >> I am also in 443 and thought Charlie did leave the pitch

So that would be the rule about leaving the field of play without the permission of the referee. Perhaps a montage of cases where the rule wasn’t applied could be used to request clarification from the SFA.

the ref today was poor, inept and had no control over the game, that was down to his limited capabilities, NOT I was assured today because of any loyalties to the south side of the river.

I’d love to see the stats on this booking after scoring a goal crap. What’s the odds we have so many more bookings than other teams.

  6. The Honest Cover-up on

I just read on videocelts.com that Jim traynor managed to secure an interview with Craig Whyte, in his position as Daily Record sports writer. On Saturday, he was involved in presenting BBC Scotland’s football coverage but had to go home sick early and was unable to host his phone-in show. What an embarrassment to his profession he is.

Is this the first case of a lackey “dogging it” in order to protect his paymasters?

Not sure what that law is. Doesn;t matter really does it?

After all – Scott Brown got a yellow last year for standing still.

    On the pitch.

    He did stare though.

Is there a “no staring” rule?

  8. Henriks Sombrero on

This law about bookings for leaving the field of play after a goal is ENTIRELY up to the discretion of the referee. We, as a club, need to publicly state what the figures are in terms of each team in the league and ask why.

  9. SwanseaBhoy haha. You’ve rumbled my cunning plan to get a lift of you again sometime!

The scarf has the StBarrs badge I just got from Barrach so would be good to get back.

    Pleasure meeting you.

  10. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!! Tick Tock !! on

Was at the game, as usual, today…….strange old game where we were bereft of creativity for spells…..hope it was just ‘coming off’ a European game….

Is anybody how often a player is sent off the game before his team plays the current buns.?….LOL…!!

When are we going to start playing for 90 mins the way we played after Aberdeen equalised…?….we are not going to ‘grow’ as a team until we start showing some urgency from start to finish…..

Anyway, I suppose it’s all about winning the 3 points until they go into administration….wonder if they will be able to pay the players’ wages this month…….Tick Tock….!!!

  11. the honest cover up

    disgraceful

i`d imagine jabba didnae fancy answer questions about Whyte…

  12. Craig Bellamy and Scott Brown did not leave the field and where booked

A few years back the huns dug out where involved in scrum off the field along with the players. This season we had a huns player giving us the V after scoring and also 3 others leaving the pitch none where booked.

Agreed, any law in Scotland that relies on the referee’s or the police force

discretion ,we are are going to get it in the erse.

What is the wording of the law around celebrating. There is a wiki entry on misconduct that includes:

In addition, a player is cautioned and shown a yellow card for “unsporting behaviour” which includes but is not limited to: Extravagant celebration, such as covering one’s head with one’s jersey, or removing it over the head, and entering the crowd.

So what was Charlie guilty of?

    We can but try.

canamalar has been saying for long enough that something should be done on the health and safety front, our players are not afforded the same level of protection players from every other team in the league are.

One of our players needs to take the sfa to court on this issue, take Hooper for instance, he has never been the same since bougerra done him.

Just ask Robbie Keane what his calfs and ankles were like after he was kicked around for 90 mins. by the same thug.

Something has to change, or we may as well switch the lights off.

Aye, and neither does willie collum have any alegiences to them either, but they obviously have an alegience to their bosses, who are huns if I am not mistaken.

Honest referees are not wanted by the sfa, this has been proven as fact through the years.

I saw a report of that incident on the news. They didn’t give names. I know Joe well as I go to Cosgrove’s when Celtic are playing mid-week. They’ll get their come uppace without a shadow of a doubt.

  21. Can’t put my finger on it but theres something not right with us. As usual, as always, Celtic fans are the best thing about our club. The GB are outstanding.

  22. Cultsbhoy,

    P5 Saltires ?

You must coach the St Joseph’s lads ? My son definitely plays them. I Thought you stated before that you coached the Cults lads. Mus’tve been mistaken.

I’ll say hello at the next St Joseph’s game then.

  23. I can’t help feeling lennie’s days as our manager are numbered. The team doesn’t look like it can put consistent performances in and we’ll have more games like Killie. I can’t think who’d sort them but what do I know, I thought alistair mccoist would be shite.

  27. Will not comment on game as everything you need to know about our poor team has been said earlier. Fan-at-ic at 20.33 was very pertinent comment.

    Ref was hopeless.

Am overseas on holiday and saw game in a bar via celtic tv. Would hate to have to watch that coverage every week. To describe coverage as appallingly amateurish is being kind.
