Celtic 2-1 Dundee United

820

Two early goals by Gary Hooper and Victor Wanyama were enough to overcome Dundee United at Celtic Park today but a cracking strike by John Rankin early in the second half ensured the table toppers had to fight all the way.

Anthony Stokes had an early opportunity to test Pernis in the United goal with a free kick, as is often the case with Anthony’s free kicks, he struck the defensive wall.  United had the best chance of the opening exchanges after 7 minutes but Fraser Forster denied Garry Kenneth at his near post after a goalmouth scramble.  The visitors kept the pressure on for the next few minutes but were to concede soon thereafter.

Thomas Rogne cleared his lines with a defensive header which Stokes won with an aerial challenge and reacted first to prod the ball forward to an alert Gary Hooper.  Hooper made the most of the space available, opened his body and placed an immaculately measured shot inside the right post to put Celtic ahead.

Five minutes later Georgios Samaras earned hearty applause throughout the stadium for a robust challenge on Willo Flood before forcing Pernis to turn a shot behind.  The resulting corner was played short to Izaguirre who through a deep and high cross into the box.  Victor Wanyama was first to react and seemed to have jumped early but he somehow managed to hover a millisecond long enough to be level with the ball when he met it before propelling it high into the top left corner of the goal.

Shortly before half time Stokes had another opportunity from a free kick.  John Rankin broke early from the wall, raised his arm and blocked inside the penalty box.  Referee, Winter, penalised the player for breaking the wall and ordered a retake, not a penalty.  Stokes had two opportunities to make the points safe within a minute of the break.  He met a Mulgrew corner on the six yards line with a glancing header that went narrowly passed the far post.  Pernis then denied an excellent Stokes strike with a fine save.

The Celtic defence had not lost a goal in eight domestic games before today and could do little about the goal that put United back in the contest.  John Rankin struck from 26 yards, the ball clipped the inside of Fraser Forster’s right hand post and bounced in.  Shortly before the hour mark John Daly had Dundee United’s best chance of the game but Forster was equal to his header.

Georgios Samaras had Celtic’s best two chances of the second half.  The first a diving header from a Matthews cross which was saved by Pernis.  The second a cross from Matthews which Samaras pulled down with his chest before shooting over.

the first time I came to Australia on holiday I drove along that road to Apollo Bay and the Twelve Apostles. I went up in a light aircraft and our pilot was that young he was still on ‘P’ driving plates. True. The drive along that road is something else.

You are correct about Hooper and 16 not 15… my mistake.

I agree about kids keeping you young, I was at the Brisbane v Sydney game last night and the Sydney fans were just off to our right, (a wee bit hunnish in their behaviour) they had a penchant for chanting ‘Who are you’ to which my wee boy asks me “do you think I should give them my address too?”

    Made me laugh.

to clarify from earlier I am talking about Celts utilising conferencing technology:

-fans buy a season tcket and dial into a web conference with live pictures..Celts own the right to admission fees on matchday right? is there a case for saying we have a few thousand fholks who dial in to our live game and we are entitled to do that and keep the money

the technology exists -one of our directors runs a business tha specialises in conferencing

1,000 paying £500 per annum would cover the cost of running that and the next 1,000 would pay the salary of an 8k per week player including social costs….what might be the potential number 5,000 maybe 10,000 more ?

do the club think along these lines…tbh I have the feeling they don’t or don’t have people with the energy and nous to work around the barriers

that final v the Pars is my earliestmemory of listening to a game on radio. My family were all at the game and I as 6 year old was sent to my aunt’s house for the day, and we sat with one of those wee transistor radio’s that took a pp3 battery. I recall the sheer excitement and clearly remember the commentary on the Caesar header.

    Guid memories.

  5. Still waiting for SydneyTim to tell me which posters got hounded from this site, I’m a wee bit dissapointed he hasn’t responded. Though when I think about it I haven’t seen Edmond Dantès from Melbourne (him who, if I am not mistaken, once called the away support scum), Frank Kafka, (him who, if I am not mistaken, once called the away support scum),Ignatius J. Reilly, Herodotus, (who, if I am not mistaken, hated rebel songs), Thunder Tim, Slan Abhaile (who if I am not mistaken hated Neil Lennon being the manager of Celtic and wanted him sacked and does not know where Rebel Hill is). Not quite sure if these are the posters that Sydney Tim is refering to when he speaks of posters being driven from this site.

My dad could only afford to take one of his sons to that game. I was too far down the pecking order but for most of my kid and youth years I had Billy’s photo on my wall, it was iconic.

I feel that I have to assume that, by your post that you think PL’s bonus is justified ?

If I’m correct in my assumption then, I can only conclude that you are another one of these Celtic fans who wears a blindfold re: The Hierarchy but, no doubt you will be one of the first fans to vent your spleen when all is revealed about, the Celtic hierarchy jumping into bed with the establishment in, operation save the hun ?

  10. Kit

    being down the pecking order? You have just sparked another memory for me. The shortened version is as follows;

Leeds Utd at Hampden in semi final of EC. Dad had a new car. An Austin 1100, our first ever car. I asked him to take me for a run in it. He said ” tomorrow, I’m going out tonight”, but both he and my elder brother were acting very shifty! Everytime I asked where they were gong, I was told they were “going to see a man about a dog”

I then spotted a Celtic scarf sticking out my brothers jacket pocket!!!! The penny dropped. They were off to hampden. I decided if I cried for long enough he would relent and take me too, but alas, I was given the old ” you are too wee for this one, there’ll be over 100,000 there tonight”. I sried right up to the point the car pulled away, thinking he would turn around, but the tactic failed miserably.

  11. kev. I can tell you that summi’s tongue is planted firmly in his cheek

I see Neil is saying he wants an experienced striker

Over to you peter lawell for your 8 transfer window with the same instruction

    This time maybe?

  12. KevJungle – “Bring Back The Jungle!”

If pushed then I do think that Peter Lawwell is overpaid for what he appears to return, but then that is just my opinion and I am not privy to what was negotiated and to what Peter Lawwell actually does and what he was tasked to do. However mate, I am sure you’d agree with me that you could not hold Peter Lawwell responsible for the actions of feral MIB and the cesspool that passes for a Scottish sporting media.

  13. twists n turns:

Similar story although I was at Hampden to see Celtic beat both Racing Club and Leeds but again my Dad only got two tickets for the game at Elland Road and I did not get to go. I did throw my toys out of the pram that day.

  14. Mornin’ all.

Ole D and G gleaming with frost on a crisp, sunlit morning that gladdens the heart.

Saturday’s fixture was the ole game of two halves; we played well enough in the first half to have it done and dusted but then seemed to lose our way, especially in midfield.

I am on record as not being Fraser Forster’s biggest fan bu this save, when it was 2-1, was a game saver.

Anyways, good of the ole sect114 diehards to acknowledge the presence in their mist of CQNLegend Ylurc, and lay on a fight for his benefit.

And belated birthday wishes for yesterday to CQNLegend WG’s dad.

    :-)

The biggest game Celts have ever played in Scotland….can’t think of anything that compares

even the Coronation Cup and Empire Exhibition not as significant although the bhoys who were there may disagree with that and I am too young to know ..the 67 euro semi v Dukla Prague maybe comes close…the other semis Inter ’72 and Atletico ’74 too

but Leeds were the team of the century in 1970 the darlings of English football who had replaced Man U etc and all that malarkey, the English media were cranking it right up

the excitement at the time I remember very well..almost like a lump in the throat and tension across the shoulders and I was only 7 ;-)

You know there are people from around the world who visit Hampden just because of the record attendance that night:136,505 the highest ever in uefa competitions…how many more than the official attendance were in the ground tho’?

you sparked off tremendous memories of the people I knew then

    Leeds were def a brilliant team. In the same way we never ever forget Simpson Craig Gemmell …….for some reason I have always been able to recite straight off the cuff;

Sprake Reaney Cooper Bremner Charlton Hunter, Lorimer Clarke Jones Giles and Gray. (I didn’t just look it up – honest)

At the time, Leeds were not even my English team. I grew up admiring Man City. Colin Bell, Franny Lee, Rodney Marsh, Tony Book, Joe Corrigan, Mike Summerbee et al.

Apologies, I forgot to say again, do you believe that Peter Lawwell is responsible for the MIB an their decisions? After all, it might have been them more responsible for us losing the last three leagues more so than Peter Lawwell.

  21. Kev:

I can say anything I want and then say I got it from a source I refuse to reveal. I’ve seen you state that a couple of times now.

Never mind though, this you can answer without a source, in your opinion did the referees have an input into where the last three leagues ended up?

  22. Kev:

Are you saying that Peter Lawwell picks the first team squad over all the coaching and management staff at Celtic Park?

  23. If Peter Lawell, and it’s a big IF, in my opinion, has been signing the players and ignoring Neil’s requirements, then Lenny goes up another notch in my book. This would mean that on top of parcel bombs, death threats to him and his loved ones, , violent attacks on his person in the street, no support from the media, (indeed suggestions from them that he “brings it on himself”), on top of all of that, as he goes about trying to clear up a footballing mess and bring the title back, he has had to do so whilst being undermined in his transfer dealings as well, he deserves unreserved respect from everyone.

No one would tolerate that purely for the love of his team? Seems he has.

I called out on here some time ago for Neil to be allowed to leave. I felt he had lost the dressing room and needed to be replaced.

Yes, I made that call, and it’s not a call I am proud of I can tell you.

I feel that, the establishment know that PL has been put in charge of the day to day running of Celtic FC/PLC.

The establishment think that the Celtic PLC is a ‘house of cards’ and, is acting accordingly!

You really can’t argue with the establishments assumption when you consider that, the head of the PLC, can’t even be ersed making his way to a, single AGM in the last 5 years ?

I like to think he will come good, he seems good in bounce games.

Also NL puts him on when fit.

  26. Kev:

are you saying that Neil Lennon is a puppet to the bean counters? If so I find that hard to reconcile the Neil Lennon that wore the Jersey and the Neil Lennon that was assualted by a Hearts fan and who faced down bombs bullets and threats against his family just so he could be Peter Lawwell’s bitch.
