Celtic 5-0 Hearts

366

It was the Gary Hooper show as a five goal performance by Scottish football’s top scorer this season lit up a wet and windy Celtic Park on trophy day.  Two poachers’ goals inside the opening 8 minutes had the capacity crowd celebrating.  The opener came after Hearts’ keeper Jamie MacDonald saved a Kris Commons shot but Hooper was on hand to knock home the rebound.

The crowd had only just settled from that goal when Georgios Samaras broke down the left channel and squared a pass for Hooper to knock into the empty net.

Celtic were awarded a penalty six minutes before the break when Joe Ledley had his ankle clipped inside the box.  Gary Hooper, not a prodigious scorer from the spot, smashed the ball straight down the middle and into the net.

David Templeton was unable to hit the target midway through the second half with what turned out to be Hearts only attempt at goal all game.

Hearts conceded cheaply on 66 minutes when Kris Commons found the unmarked Hooper inside the box who gratefully converted for his fourth.

By now it was all about whether we would see Hooper score a fifth, a feat most of us had never witnessed by a Celtic player before.  He duly obliged two minutes from time when he rounded the exposed MacDonald and slotted the ball home before the late-arriving surge of Hearts defenders.

    Pipe down ya miseries…

City fans are living the dream.

They’ve gone from Div 1 to the their first title in 44 years.

Sadly, the soul of their club will suffer with this avalanche of money so we shouldn’t begrudge them their moment…

If Man U had won it it would have been a travesty.

They are the worst Man U side I’ve seen and have some very ordinary players.

Had they not brought out Scholes they would have been stuffed.

They have a rotten Keeper, some questionable defenders (Jonny Evans for heaven’s sake) and some ordinary midfielders in comparison to other top European sides.

Rooney is their star and the wee Mexican a decent but the rest ain’t that hot.

Manchester City have it in them to dominate down there for a long time. You cannot see compete financially with them and no side in Europe can. It remains to be seen if they can repeat it but it is good for the City fans who have had to live in the shadow of that other mob for years.

    Well done to City.

  3. Interesting to see what happens now in the EPL. I noticed the comms were all talking it up after the City game – something they have perhaps not really felt the need to do in the past.

Essentially, it is a league where whoever has the most billions can essentially buy it. Organic clubs like Man Utd and Arsenal (and I hold no candle for either) are now in danger of slipping into irrelevance as a procession of Arab and Russian oligarchs throws money at their teams.

For everyone else, it is a non-event. They are miles behind. The best they can hope for is a Europa League spot, and none of them actually rate that competition anyway.

Today was a dramatic finish, and its nice to see City fans celebrating – the scenes remind me a wee bit of us stopping the Tainted Ten.

But the lesson from today is that the ability to fashion a team on a budget, to grow one’s own players and develop a footballing philosophy – are unimportant to winning the EPL.

Stan Collymore talking trash on Talksport.

You can’t replicate this in Germany, Spain or Italy.

    Aye you can.

    Delusional.

Football in any country can do this.

Couldn’t care less about English fitba. Mr Platini needs to apply FFP at all levels and not buckle when the ManU’s Barca’s and Milan’s try to cheat their way to success.

Money imo is spoiling football the money Man.City have spent a fortune no other club in the EPL can cope with that not even Man.Utd.I suppose Blackburn Rov.started it all during the Dalgliesh days and then Chelsea followed on.It does affect us Celtic supporters in that we cannot seriously expect to get to the later stages of the Champions league.H.H.

I had forgoten about the bet, nice wee surprise, more made up for the Mrs, she has been wanting a wee white dog for ages, we were leaving the market when we saw someone geting out of a car with a box, on the box was regalo perros, she had to have a look, and there was her wee white dog in the box with 4 more.

    Her face was a picture.

  11. Snake – what does it say about the rest of the league if the worst Man Utd team in history take the league to the 94th minute of the last game of the season? Not only that but they finish 19(?) points ahead of the team in third.

Am I right in thinking that City got promotion a couple of hours before we drew with Dunfermline to delay stopping 10 in a row?

I have vague recollections of being in a pub car-park or beer garden in Dunfermline listeining to the radio from someone’s car.

Don’t know about the City / Celtic conection BUT I do know that 9 times out of 10 When Boca Juniors WIN the Argentine League, Celtic WIN the SPL.

The last time both teams did it. This season Boca won their league when Celtic were 4 points behind and CLOSING. I told most of the “old firm” supporters in my town that Boca had just won so once we overtook Ran*ers even their supporters in the town thought they’d lose – and that was BEFORE administration.

  15. Pippo inzaghi scored on his final match for milan. Probably thee worst footballer iv ever seen… anyone remember boruc givin him a look as if to say ‘wat are ye at?’ in the san siro wen pippo headed straight into his arms wen he had an open net?

Cheers mate, never heard of a Dreabox but will look into it.

  18. Time for the green shirt or the green tie tomorrow. Champions, and I’ll be letting everyone know. And a five-star performance to round off the season.

Churlish I know, but I wish our announcer had read out each squad player’s name as they received their medals. Recognition of every player’s contribution would have been nice – every single one played a part.

  19. TET also the owner of a wee white dog as you may know if you’ve read Glasgowghirl’s post. Train it to do the Broony – very funny!

Don’t get me wrong I don’t like the EPL and don’t rate it as the best league but that today was dramatic and it did live up to its billing.

Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool are now all also rans.

You’ll get the odd team who get a good run but finish 6th and it is the best league?

    Drivel.

  22. Bhoylo83 – I read an excellent piece by Gabrielle Marcotti about Pippo. In it Pippo admitted that he wasn’t much of a footballer but he worked really hard at his reading of the game and studying how the opposition played. I have to say that my respect for him went up quite a lot after that (from none).

Great day at Celtic Park today………wet, windy, cold and wonderful..

I came in from the game, settled down to watch th City game at 88th minute …. Let out a roar when they scored the winner….I HAVE NO IDEA WHY …. Possibly because it was the most amazing situation I have ever seen …… Well done City……. And, more importantly, WELL DONE CELTIC

  26. Paul 67,

Are you confusing super Gary Hooper’s 4th and 5th goals in your game summary?

Apologies if you are not and it’s my brain that’s scrambled. Was trying to run through my recollection of his goals but now really confused after reading your take.

  27. Anyone got a link to the presentation of the trophy? My internet went down shortly after the final whistle. Thanks.

    a guy that knows diego

says yer man aguero dislikes manchester – too cold for him

says he’s hopin to join real madrid instead

    let’s see

    hail hail

Most Argentines and Brazillians HATE the cold weather and don’t want to play in the UK – unless, of course, the money’s good. Especially Carlito (Tevez).

Incedentally, another Argentine “trait” is because of the unstable economy most Argentines value things that can accumulate wealth hence when Diego played he demanded that he got paid in property rather than money so he’s got several houses in Europe – especially Italy and Spain.
