Celtic 5-0 Hearts

366

It was the Gary Hooper show as a five goal performance by Scottish football’s top scorer this season lit up a wet and windy Celtic Park on trophy day.  Two poachers’ goals inside the opening 8 minutes had the capacity crowd celebrating.  The opener came after Hearts’ keeper Jamie MacDonald saved a Kris Commons shot but Hooper was on hand to knock home the rebound.

The crowd had only just settled from that goal when Georgios Samaras broke down the left channel and squared a pass for Hooper to knock into the empty net.

Celtic were awarded a penalty six minutes before the break when Joe Ledley had his ankle clipped inside the box.  Gary Hooper, not a prodigious scorer from the spot, smashed the ball straight down the middle and into the net.

David Templeton was unable to hit the target midway through the second half with what turned out to be Hearts only attempt at goal all game.

Hearts conceded cheaply on 66 minutes when Kris Commons found the unmarked Hooper inside the box who gratefully converted for his fourth.

By now it was all about whether we would see Hooper score a fifth, a feat most of us had never witnessed by a Celtic player before.  He duly obliged two minutes from time when he rounded the exposed MacDonald and slotted the ball home before the late-arriving surge of Hearts defenders.

I have seen the following Celts score 5 goals in a game…..

29 Feb 1960 Neil Mochan in a 5-0 win v St Mirren in a Scottish Cup 2nd replay at Celtic Park. After 1-1 and 4-4 draws.

16 September 1964 Stevie Chalmers in a 6-0 win v East Fife in the League Cup quarter final at Celtic Park. We lost the first leg 0-2 at Methil.

30 January 1965 John Hughes (wearing Big Bily’s sannies on a frozen pitch) in a 8-0 win v Aberdeen in the league at Celtic Park. Churchill’s state funeral that day.

31 August 1968 Bobby Lennox in a League Cup section tie v Partick Thistle at Firhill. in a 6-0 win.

PS I did not have the privelege to see the great man play

    .

I think it would be better to wait until we see the documentry aired before we accuse anyone of phone tapping. I have felt since the begining of this saga with Rangers that people could be prosecuted for what has gone on and I have not changed my mind.H.H.

I believe there’s a set number of medals provided by the SPHell but the winning club can request additional medals at their own expense.

I think the Mark Daly programme is on Thursday night.

Tam Cowan was talking about it on Off the Ball, and he says it is dynamite, having apparently recently spoken to Daly himself.

This brilliant stuff has been grudged all season and to think of the crap We, as the CELTIC family have put up with makes our win all the more meaningful.

Really really proud and chuffed to the knickerline.

Phenomenal performance by Celtic today. Special congratulatons to Gary Hooper for a five star show. I think the last person to score 5 in the SPL was Marco Negri for Thems FC(IA). Well done The Bhoys. Great touch by Neil to present the SPL Trophy to the Green Brigade. They had a lot to do with this season’s win. Heroes to a bhoy and ghirl.

Count me in the camp who is glad that Gary Hooper is a Celtic player. I don’t want him sold to Southhampton or anyone else for £7-8million. I want Gary in the Hoops for the next 3-4 years earning twicw that amount of money for Celtic each season. He’s only 23-24 and is 3 years or so away from his peak years. Eventually he will want to go to pastures new for a fresh challenge if we remain in the SPL but let’s not campaign to sell him. We are Celtic supporters not Celtic econom. Let those who are paid to worry about the money do their jobs while we worry about the numbers of trophies we are going to win in the next few years.

Looking forward to next season already!

  17. re: SDM and potential phone hacking

It doesn’t surprise me at all.

If SDM (and his little helpers in the press) hadn’t been so jealous of Fergus McCann (I’d guess it would because Fergus actually put his own money into Celtic rather than someone else’s and claim it as his own) for not asset-stripping the club when he had a glorious opportunity to do so then I can only speak for myself when I say I wouldn’t be gloating anywhere near as much if SDM had shown more grace and humility for a guy actually doing the right things.

By doing so he would’ve assisted Fergus’s media profile and as a result would probably not divide the Celtic support as he still does, but SDM won the media war and if phone hacking was used, can’t say anything SDM did would surprise me.

Not much chance of a man of SDM’s character showing either grace or humility, Saturday evening’s rant at the SFA another case in point.

  18. Gene's a Bhoys name on

It could be phone tapping not hacking – the current scandal is about hacking into messages left – to get the sort of info alluded to then they would have to listen into calls

could of course be a lot of bull

Oh and a belated congratulations to Manchester City for thei enthralling win today. I was exhausted watching it on the telly. An unbelievable last 5 minutes of injury time. I hope their fans have a great night. Well done.

  23. The Bottom Line is….

Willie Wallace scored 4 in that game.

Bobby Lennox and “the Mighty Quinn” got the others in a 6-0 win.
