CELTIC ALERT AS BRORA AWARDED TITLE

CELTIC will be interested to learn Highland League bosses have decided to bring the 2019/20 league campaign to a halt with six matches remaining – and award the title to leaders Brora Rangers.

The Hoops are still awaiting the decision that could see them picking up their ninth successive title as they sit on top of the Premiership with a 13-point advantage with only eight games to play.

Coincidentally, Brora also have a 13-point lead which prompted the league bosses to give them the flag.

They are ahead of second-placed Inverurie Locos while Fraserburgh had three games in hand and a mathematical chance of overhauling them at the top.

A statement read: “The league goes into a form of hibernation until such time as football resumes after the Covid-19 pandemic passes.

“At that time, the possibilities for creating meaningful competitions in season 2020/2021 will be considered and that, in turn, will depend on when resumption takes place.

“In such a difficult time for all, the meeting was clear in its view that issues much more important than football currently predominate, with health and livelihoods being far more significant.”

The Highland officials have been the first to declare the current positions and it is understood they informed the SFA and SPFL before taking the decision and were  allowed to proceed, acoording to a report in the Scottish Sun on Sunday.

Brora boss Steven Mackay said: “The Highland League board and clubs deserve credit for making a correct and fair decision.

“I don’t think anyone could deny that my players have been the most consistent this season. We deserve to be crowned champions.”
