Celtic are the trophy now

107

Celtic totally bossed Dundee United when the teams met there on league duty earlier in the season.  It was a different story in both meetings at Celtic Park, when an added-time Liel Abada goal in January brought the league leaders their only win.

Since that dramatic game, United have lost only once in eight outings, when a late own-goal at Livingston denied them a point.  They will be difficult opponents tonight, just as importantly, I expect Tannadice to resemble a ploughed field.

Years ago, I remember writing that those who expect Celtic to win a treble have a poor grasp of history.  Several times we had the League Cup in the boardroom, sat top of the table and were confident of beating anyone we met.  For 38 years, that aspiration only materialised once.

The world changed in season 2016-17.  In the 12 domestic cup competitions since, Celtic lost only twice, trebles flooded in.  This did not make cup wins less valuable, in fact their prestige rose.  Everyone wanted to win a cup as Celtic had cornered the market.

We are the trophy now.  Cup wins against Celtic are so rare and valuable they are rightly celebrated like trophies.  Ange Postecoglou had the opportunity to spend a week preparing his players for a game.  Those with a grasp of modern history will not bet against him.

Big sporting week for the 26 counties.

The egg chasers at Twickers and now the serious money at the racing.

    All starting to make sense.

  4. Newco beat Dundee in their usual way, a goal from a corner and then a penalty won by cheating. Celtic will need to stop them scoring from a corner. That’s the main danger they will pose against us.

  5. I noticed quite a few people say that Europe didn’t matter this season, it’s all about the league etc. yet you don’t really hear that about the domestic cups.

Not saying it’s necessarily right or wrong, just an observation.

Having watched the first two episodes of the latest series of Peaky Blinders with increasing disappointment and incredulity, this morning I started on the third instalment. I lasted 20 minutes and won’t be back.

The protracted scene around the meeting in Mosley’s house was cringeworthy with laughable dialogue that was stilted and shambolic. What once was great entertainment has now descended to abject mediocrity with an absurd script and terrible acting.

It’s the same old story. Quit while you’re ahead and don’t milk the heffer dry.

I would stick to the Cobol …

Although I have wondered why PB was being bigged up so much by the BBC.

I don’t get near my — sorry our — TV and this has been the case for the last 20 years so I haven’t seen any of it.

  14. Just seen Sevco penalty. Really bad decision. The centre half moved across to block a direct shot. Sevco player realises the gap is block and runs into him.

it looks like a dive in real time and even more so on re-runs. Remember Ajeti was tried by TV/paper and then SFA and then cleared?

I think he dived as well BTW😎

    Sorry 32 counties at Twickers.

I think Ireland are at home to Scotland on Saturday…

  16. We have lost prospects like Doak to Liverpool, Morrison & Hepburn to Bayern and Josh Adam to Man City. For some of them this will prove to have been a good career move; for others it won’t. We cannot stop it anymore than we can stop leaking first team players to lesser clubs like Southhampton and Bournemouth.

But shutting down our Academy is madness because a) we are still developing good players who have not (yet) been poached- Summers, Moffat, Vata and Murray and b)We also do the same things with English Academies- (Lawal from Watford, Dawson from Scunthorpe).

If we, a bigger richer club shut down our academy, with all its support staff, who will develop our players to a level where we would want to buy them. Will ICT develop good enough players? How about United- maybe Ryan Gauld, if pushed, from their last 10 years product?

We cannot afford not to develop our own- We cannot let this development route go and just rely on the transfer market. Every big club develops their own and every one of them faces the same dilemma as us; how to give them enough game time at a decent level in order to allow them to leapfrog a first team squad full of internationalists. You have to be good to do it and only a rare few will be good enough.

Ange hinted, after dropping Doak, that he only wants players who want to be here. The good news is that he is still playing Dembele- one I thought we’d definitely lose.

I don’t wish Ben Doak any ill at all but I cannot honestly wish him good luck either. I have no real interest in players after they leave Celtic, especially if they have contributed little to the club. The likes of Broony, Tierney and Dalglish I can still admire without any affection for their chosen club but these kids leaving before they have done anything for us- I just forget ’em and wait for our next one.

Any chance – if you remember – of putting “SPOILER ALERT” at the top of any posts about Peaky Blinders?

Haven’t had the time to watch any of this series yet, and trying to avoid any chat about it :-))

  19. I am not so sure about our Academy. I guess we will be watching how Brentford get on with interest.

I note part of Brentford’s reasoning is that although a premiership club they are ” little fish in the Greater London pond.

We are situated right next to the richest league in the world ( For now )

I also believe that the Academy should have a community focus. That community focus should be in the East End of Glasgow and not East Dunbartonshire.

My thinking may be totally on the wrong track but I’m sure Celtic will be watching closely.

    Anyway, COYBIG tonight.

  21. Wish to god some of our posters would stop forecasting scores .I would love to see 3 or 4 0 nil to the celts .unfortunately its not as easy as that . With regards to young doak I second SFTB thoughts , once a players leaves the hoops thats it for me no interest . Tonight if we turn up and play the way we can we should head home Victor’s HH

Can you explain to me (a) why my predicting a Celtic score pains you so much and (b) how my prediction adversely affects the performance of the team after kick-off.

  24. Ben Doak – We lose him to a Top Academy, he will have got a bump in finances and at 16 who would begrudge the young fella and his family.

We took a top prospect from a very good academy at Watford (Lawal – their POTY & Captain at the time , at the age) so not all 1 way traffic.

Agree with you about the first two seasons, which is why the third is such a let-down.

  26. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

My thoughts on academy broadly similar to SFTB’s.

Was almost blissfully unaware of the existence of messrs Doak, Hepburn, Morrison and Adam

(possibly a failing on my part, I used to take a great interest in the development team but have less time these days)

    If they move?

Good luck kids. Hope you retain some affection for the Celts but I won’t pine for you.

    As for academies in general?

The most successful academies and the teams that win trophies in senior football …

… are rarely at the same clubs.

    If the academy could promote

    – 1 first team regular

    – 2 first team squad regulars

plus 3 players transferred for some dough?

    Every 3 years?

Posters queuing up to say they have no interest in the career of any player who leaves Celtic.

I can’t find where anyone has suggested they should.

Just because I wish a departing Celtic player good luck doesn’t mean I am going to spend a second of my time following his progress.

Whit? Who said I worked with IMS or DB2?

And Cobol had nothing to do with Systems Analysis. It was a commercial business language and was replaced by 4G languages in the 80s & 90s.

Nowhere near enough even though our current performance has been a huge way below this.

Last 10 years = only one regular starting player / KT.

Our recent performance has been shocking.

2016 U19 / B team who made it onto the TV = produced one regular starter who was brought in as an 18 year old from overseas and one current squad player who has his critics.

    Regular = KA.

    Squad = MJ.

The rest struggled to get games for SCh sides when they left.

Huge fail after a huge amount of hype.

The Academy is and has been a huge fail since it partnered with St N’s in Kirky.

The whole vibe is one of glee club / High School Musical not a high performance training environment.

We have had year after year of poor performance.

Which has now transitioned into a loss of talent at 16/17 to other clubs.

They can see that the system is failing and are choosing to jump early before the glee club gets their claws into them.
