Celtic-Atletico programme as 40,000 hearts beat as one

Our  unofficial Celtic v Atletico Madrid match programme is now available.  We preview tomorrow’s match as well as the other game in our group between Rennes and Udinese, as well as a look back 37 years to that infamous game against Atletico in the European Cup semi-final.

European nights have always been special in my Celtic supporting time.  When I was a boy they would fill Celtic Park whereas it was predominantly empty on domestic duty.  The modern era brought great Uefa Cup and Champions league moments but for a while, even at the peak of our Champions League prowess, the stadium lost something to corporate interests.  I remember watching fans walk out of the stadium with 10 minutes on the clock when we were drawing 0-0 with Milan!

Tomorrow night will be more like the great days I remember, when every soul inside the ground was plugged into the nervous anticipation that pumps through all our veins.

Atletico Madrid occupies a similar place in our history to Rapid Vienna.  If you were around during the 70s and 80s, when these two clubs eliminated Celtic on their way to European finals, by violence and dishonesty respectively, games against these clubs will have an added dimension.  Two years ago we finished above a decent Rapid team in the Europa League group stage who had already dumped Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa.  When Scott McDonald’s goal went in I raised my arms and inadvertently punched the safety ladder at the back of the North Stand, the cut knuckles and bruising lasted weeks.  It was a stupid incident but captures the, 40-odd-thousand-people-one-heartbeat, phenomenon that we get to experience too seldom in our lives.

I’m going to look out the hoops tonight, been ages since I’ve worn them.  Bring on Atletico, Falcao ‘n’ all.

Coorslad, is that confirmed about Rodgers at final tonight or a rumour? Why would he go when he could get his scout to do it? I know a couple of scouts there tonight as I saw their texts requesting tickets

Think the big problem for any caller – is getting past the researcher to make the point.

Radio stations are all to quick to quote: sub judice as the get out clause.

The presenter has a 7 second delay/ mute button – and they are quick to use it.

  4. Mathews at RB, Forrest at RM – the best partnership down that side I’ve seen under Lennon. 6 games played, 6 wins.

    Loovens/Majstorovic at CB – 16 games together, 1 defeat, 15 wins.

They may not appear to be the best defensively, but the reason they work so well is that Dan organises, while Loovens’ finesse in the pass – look how many telling interceptions of his end up at the feet of a Celtic player – allows Celtic to play flowing football from the back.

Ledley/Samaras at LB/LM. I posted before the game that they had never played as a partnership before. We only have the evidence of that one game, but they looked better than any other partnership I have seen down the left. I also agree with Kojo **heresy alert** – Ledley looks better than Izzy

Kayal/Wanyama at CM – they had a bad start at Kilmarnock, where Kayal looked well off his game, but now they would be my favoured partnership in an area with tough competition.

Hooper/Stokes – 89 points out of a possible 96 in starts together. Incredible.

Could this be the core of the team that sees out the rest of the season?

  5. Just picking up the weans from dancing and heard oor Terry on Clyde. Kayal and Victor the best central midfield at Parkhead in 30 years???

Terry my good man, stay aff the glue :)

Just seen Nasri warming up (his hammies?) with what looks like a big elastic band round his thighs – stretching it out side-to-side.

    Not seen that before!

The same reason that they have refused to report that they have been accused of cheating the other teams in the league, and the Exchequer to the tune of circa £30m pounds previously.

The crux is that they have an audience, which doesn’t want to pay to read/hear about stuff like this.

Doesn’t mean that because it is not in the record/sun, or talked about on clyde etc. makes it go away (hence the ‘current’ tax case). Makes the big surprise coming their way even more enjoyable IMO.

  11. That wisnae the night when Tiger Tim made reference to the huns getting beat over the tannoy system at CP?

    Indeed ! —-

My addled old bonce remembers Peter Lilley making a lot of noise about failing Companies failing to make National Insurance Contributions . My memory says that he proposed to introduce legislation to deal with Company Directors who intentionally avoided paying NIC s whilst deliberately running a business into insolvency.[ me thinks that might be The Thousandaire’s masterplan] Think he was proposing legislation which would allow HMG to seize the personal assets of such Directors .

Memory thinks Mid 90s -don’t know if the legislation was enacted .

You are right -it should be a big story !

  13. Thought Celts played quite well in the Vicente Calderon and might have got a result against Athletico with a bit of luck. We have just the one loss in our four European matches which should give the team confidence going into Wednesday night’s game. Come on the HOOPS.

Great stuff again. I had goal celebration related discomfort myself recently but mine was technological rather than physical. Excessive jumping about at the Rennes game resulted in a phone shattering tragedy on the concrete of Paradise.

No worries amigo. That’s the thing once you’ve met a CQNer, relationships are generally friendly and positive.

Have you ever met the myth that is The Token Tim?

    Heard good things about him.

  19. Napoli 0 – Juve 0 after 20 mins .

    Eventful game –

Napoli were awarded a penalty — Hamsik took it , Hamsik scored but the Ref ordered it to be taken again because 2 Napoli players had entered the box. Hamsil took the re take and hit the bar.

    Game getting heated .

Regarding the tweet, information reaches me that GT are trying, and struggling, to contact any of the 3 directors.

The inference is that there are audit / annual report questions that need addressed.

Is this significant? They do have form for disappearing for long periods and being unreachable. Other “interested parties” have compelled of the same issue. Just busy, incompetent, or in hiding? That- we can all speculate upon.
