Celtic-Atletico programme as 40,000 hearts beat as one

639

Our  unofficial Celtic v Atletico Madrid match programme is now available.  We preview tomorrow’s match as well as the other game in our group between Rennes and Udinese, as well as a look back 37 years to that infamous game against Atletico in the European Cup semi-final.

European nights have always been special in my Celtic supporting time.  When I was a boy they would fill Celtic Park whereas it was predominantly empty on domestic duty.  The modern era brought great Uefa Cup and Champions league moments but for a while, even at the peak of our Champions League prowess, the stadium lost something to corporate interests.  I remember watching fans walk out of the stadium with 10 minutes on the clock when we were drawing 0-0 with Milan!

Tomorrow night will be more like the great days I remember, when every soul inside the ground was plugged into the nervous anticipation that pumps through all our veins.

Atletico Madrid occupies a similar place in our history to Rapid Vienna.  If you were around during the 70s and 80s, when these two clubs eliminated Celtic on their way to European finals, by violence and dishonesty respectively, games against these clubs will have an added dimension.  Two years ago we finished above a decent Rapid team in the Europa League group stage who had already dumped Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa.  When Scott McDonald’s goal went in I raised my arms and inadvertently punched the safety ladder at the back of the North Stand, the cut knuckles and bruising lasted weeks.  It was a stupid incident but captures the, 40-odd-thousand-people-one-heartbeat, phenomenon that we get to experience too seldom in our lives.

I’m going to look out the hoops tonight, been ages since I’ve worn them.  Bring on Atletico, Falcao ‘n’ all.

Airport bus to Haymarket Staion then train. Anymore than three – get a taxi.

  8. I have been watching Celtic for over 50 years so European nights are a bit special.

i have to praise the green brigade for bringing paradise back to life when we play in Europe, but just as much when we play at Celtic park.

watching Arsenalv Man City and the old song of ” by far the greatest team the world has ever seen” just seems to be song sung by all EPL and championship sides.( boring )

Duffield in Brazil shocker. Can it be mere coincidence that this story emerges just as RTC reveals that the Horrible’s Accountants are unable to reach any of the troika of Whyte, Ellis or Betts to clarify ‘issues’ as regards the late accounts and the auditing and signing off thereof? I think not. Maybe Smudger heading to Brazil makes more sense in a Ronnie Biggs/Martin Boorman kind of way after all. He’s preparing the ground for the going to ground of the great and good which will inevitably follow follow the crash and burn just around the corner. If poor wee Kirkie Broadfoot felt emotional and ruffled when confronted by the wrath of the Hunnites in defeat, just think how much worse it could be for the likes of the MBB and his dodgy pals when the mammaries go skyward. All of which is, natch, nice.

Only the two coming over, is that the only option? Though there may be a bus going to Glasgow or something.

  12. Always think Arsenal look out of tune without Song. Man City defence looks less crowded without Kompany

I think they will both have made buttons. A useful friendly for HSV. A desperation job for the huns.

Hello darkness my old friend I’ve come to talk with you again because a vision softly creeping left its seeds while I was sleeping and the vision that was planted in my brain still remains within the sound of silence In restless dreams I walked alone narrow streets of cobblestone neath the halo of a streetlamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp when my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light that split the night and touched the sound of silence And in the naked light I saw ten thousand people maybe more people talking without speaking people hearing without listening people writing songs that voices never shared and no one dared disturb the sound of silence Fool said I you do not know silence like a cancer grows hear my words and I might teach you take my arms and I might reach you but my words like silent raindrops fell and echoed in the wells of silence And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they’d made and the sign flashed out its warning in the words that it was forming and the sign said the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls and whispered in the sound of silence

    From an earlier post

Got a call today from what sounded like an Indian call centre, claiming to be microsoft Technical support. I smelled a rat and put the guy off but first got an email address from him on the pretext that I would get back to him. I then googled them ( mstechonline. com) and found out some info on their scam. Basically , they will try to get £180 out of you for non existant computer protection and will also ask you to key in a code which gives them access to all the personal info on your computer, bank details, passwords, etc.

  15. Estadio won’t be escaping from hospital until Friday at earliest. They reckon it’s Labyrnthintitis but can’t get scanning Brain until Thurs noo because of them socialists striking tomorrow. Anyway. He’s managed to source himself a private room with TV and DVD by giving up his season book to one of the administrators on the ward. Seems he is surrounded by Tim staff and patients.

Airport bus to St Andrews Sq then bus to Glasgow is the poor option. Train more frequent and quicker.
