Celtic-Atletico programme as 40,000 hearts beat as one

639

Our  unofficial Celtic v Atletico Madrid match programme is now available.  We preview tomorrow’s match as well as the other game in our group between Rennes and Udinese, as well as a look back 37 years to that infamous game against Atletico in the European Cup semi-final.

European nights have always been special in my Celtic supporting time.  When I was a boy they would fill Celtic Park whereas it was predominantly empty on domestic duty.  The modern era brought great Uefa Cup and Champions league moments but for a while, even at the peak of our Champions League prowess, the stadium lost something to corporate interests.  I remember watching fans walk out of the stadium with 10 minutes on the clock when we were drawing 0-0 with Milan!

Tomorrow night will be more like the great days I remember, when every soul inside the ground was plugged into the nervous anticipation that pumps through all our veins.

Atletico Madrid occupies a similar place in our history to Rapid Vienna.  If you were around during the 70s and 80s, when these two clubs eliminated Celtic on their way to European finals, by violence and dishonesty respectively, games against these clubs will have an added dimension.  Two years ago we finished above a decent Rapid team in the Europa League group stage who had already dumped Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa.  When Scott McDonald’s goal went in I raised my arms and inadvertently punched the safety ladder at the back of the North Stand, the cut knuckles and bruising lasted weeks.  It was a stupid incident but captures the, 40-odd-thousand-people-one-heartbeat, phenomenon that we get to experience too seldom in our lives.

I’m going to look out the hoops tonight, been ages since I’ve worn them.  Bring on Atletico, Falcao ‘n’ all.

Palacio- you can actually take a short taxi ride (or wheel your cases for a 20 min walk!) and pick up the Glasgow bus at one of the stops on the main road.

The citylink 900 used to stop on the dual carriageway not far from airport.

It would take them to buchan st bus station.

It may also stop at baillieston, but been a fee years since I used it.

Warning it does get busy at rush hour.

    Hope it helps.

  4. Re Ed airport to Glasgow,

Think I might opt for Taxi to Uphall station about 6 miles, then train to queen st station,

Says on scotrail website that this is a new route.

Darn you Ryanair for ditching the Prestwick flights.

Yes it still stops at Baillieston. Across from Morrisons and also round the corner at Easterhouse train station.

It’s a good trek from Edinburgh airport to the main road, so they’d need to be travelling light.

In Baillieston Main Street they can catch the 62 to Parkhead or off at Easterhouse station and take the train to Carntyne or Bellgrove.

Or as you say, all the way into town and then follow the pubs to Celtic Park. :)

  9. Thomthetim,

Just catching up and read your post from last night disparaging concerns over asset management (in particular Scott Brown) as “utter nonsense”. To be equally dismissive, I’d suggest that view displays a naivety as to the typical modern day professional footballer.

The primary focus of a new contract to a footballer is more often than not the securing of the next best possible pay day, with footballing interest not always a close second. You understate the ability of a club to impact on that.

For any player, I’d insist they sign a new contract by the opening of the transfer window 12 months prior to the expiry of their current contract. Failing that (or a belated signing of the contract), the player goes on the transfer list when the window opens.

No summer pre-season trips to Australia or the US, nor involvement in pre-season planning. The player’s failure to commit to a new contract requires the club to plan for the forthcoming season without him.

That player meanwhile trains with the youths. That’s what the next 12 months would hold. Where does that leave the player?

Firstly, basic salary with no win bonuses for the next 12 months. Effectively a pay deduction.

Secondly, likely no international football involvement due to his absence from competitive domestic football.

Thirdly, no opportunity to display his talents to potential suitors, thereby reducing his potential to secure an improved contract 12 months later.

Fourthly, with no competitive football for 12 months, what type of contract would a new club be willing to commit to? They would proceed with caution.

Fifthly, no security of future income. A serious injury could transpire over that 12 month period – it is a risk of the job.

Harsh? Absolutely, but it is business.

Set the policy in stone from the outset and no-one can argue they weren’t aware of the policy. An agent, who fundamentally is there to represent the best interests of their client, would be brave or foolish to advocate his client sit still for 12 months and still expect a better offer to transpire 12 months later.

The situation with Bobo Balde isn’t a case in point. His career was on the wind down, he wasn’t looking to improve himself as a footballer and prolong a career. A 20 something footballer has a different outlook to that.

Well thought out post, and I agree that would give the clubs more control of the situation.

But there is a major drawback with it, unless every club adopted this strategy it can’t work, a player would not sign for a club that were demanding these clauses, they would go to a club without that policy.

    Good post though.

  16. Celtic football club would like assurances that the national associationis carrying out its duties diligently with regards recent media headlines concerning players taking to the field of competition that they cannot afford to pay. In the interest of fairness and integrity together with the lack of any inquiries with regards to our own finances and the recent comments from the President of the SFA that no conflict of interest has arisen. We feel this is necessary to return confidence with our customers and shareholders in the Scottish game.

    who scored for them?

    ================

Some bloke called Bendikson from an Aluko cut-back.

Both clubs fielded shadow sides although the huns (scottish version) were flying into tackles. I only watched it intermittently but Hamburg looked in control.

Whittaker went off with a knock :-)
