Celtic, big punchers with a glass chin

271

If you were an opposition manager planning to face Celtic, what would you do?  At Ibrox we will meet a team that attacks us, but on all other occasions, we will face a packed defence intent on shutting us out.  That’s not all.  Every opponent will play for free kicks in the final third and corners, when possible.

It is not difficult to gain possession – then a foul – in wide positions 30 yards from your opponent’s goal.  This would be the staging post I’d aim for when facing Celtic.  We are winning games but set-piece crosses into the box continue to be poorly defended.  We are the football equivalent of a boxer with a big punch and a glass chin.

If I was Dundee United manager Tam Courts, who face Celtic in the Scottish Cup a week today, I would play for penalties.  Failure from 12 yards has been a regular feature of Celtic performances for years.  It has not cost us a trophy since 2016, but until we improve this crucial part of the game we are asking for a sore one.

Practice, practice, practice.  You can be sure Dundee United will this week.

  1. Celtic v Ross County already sold out.

Tremendous support bhoys and ghirls. That won’t be a gimme, so a big noisy CP is key…

I fully understand your daughter’s thinking and I like her terminology, ‘manifesting’. Yes we did change our approach yesterday and got on with the job in hand. Ange had our players prepared both mentally and physically for the game and came up with the tactics required to complete the job.

We just need to maintain our focus in the weeks ahead.

When I coached in a previous life, if we has set piece problems we would remember that the taker doesn’t need marked so you have a man / woman over. Get the tallest thug in your team and tell them to mark no one just go for the ball. Usually worked.

    ………………….

That’s a god plan. Very perceptive thinking by whoever came up with it.

Not in Tam’s nature, so I very much doubt United will play for penalties. The feeling in the Tannadice camp is that having a go at Celtic is their best hope. The players were disappointed at not having had a go in the game where we scored the 90th minute winner.

They won’t play for free kicks 30 yards out either – it looks like Ryan Edwards, their free kick target man, will most likely miss the game due to having his nose broken by a flying Hearts elbow at the weekend.

  6. As a self confessed statto, I need to know official attendnace figures, its the Rain Man in me, but Celtic have for some reason got out the habit of doing it, I dont know why, when the sold out signs go up, I want to see how many actually attend.

Boring I know but hey ho.

As Bruce says the Ross County game is “waiting on a sunny day”.

8 cup finals you say, cmon celtic, we can do this. roar them on.

Its a pity there will be 6 or 7 thousand empty seats at the sold out game……we really need a system where these empty seats can be re sold …surely in this day and age that’s feasible?!

  8. Vinnie, I dont think there are 6,000 empty seats from non-attending sb holders.

The Huns game there was hardly a single empty, the st mirren midweek game i was suprised how full it was all over. And some Irish busses never made it over, and their tickets were getting sold on.

Ross county, saturday afternoon, st josephs day, springtime, days a wee bit longer, bright light, easier ferry connections, hopefully better weather, and a rocking celtic park, a growing pitch, and its my birthday, so i would like to invite 60,000 people to my party.

  9. I mentioned on Friday that there was huge focus on Livi and were going into yesterday’s match as favourites to put the jinx on Celtic for the sixth occasion on the trot. This expectancy in my opinion put extra pressure on Livi and how their massive physical team would put the frighteners on Celtic.

The underdogs rose to the occasion in style and had the much vaunted livi defence all over the shop from the first whistle.

This was a hungry Hoops we saw yesterday playing superbly on the astroturf, reminded me of the recent performance aginst Rangers2 full of energy and hunger. The Ange selection had a few surprises but you could not have asked for any more from those players. Great to see Nir and Jamsie back to their best and capped his performance with a terrific goal.

Good also to see the strong bench introduced in the second half.

We need to sort the penalty problem ASAP .

  10. Can’t really disagree with you Paul 67 on our defensive deficiencies.

Neither of our 2 centre backs are dominant enough in the air , in either box.

  11. If we were as bad at defending set pieces as is the common theme nowadays, why have we got the best record in the League?.Losing goals is part of the game, like scoring them.We are not so hot on headers in the opponents box.Jullien was in double figures before. We are too wee. That’s the problem.

Apparently the huns have a setup, where you sell your seat if you’re not going .

Half the money goes toward your season ticket next season and half to the club.

  13. Most pleased yesterday with hunting in packs tactics.Very good.

If Jota’s final ball,in the 1st half had been more consistent,it would have been his best game for us.Roasted them, but a BT careless.Exciting watching him though.

  14. Agent paedo and other unionist scum all on wondering who is gonnae fund the racist and rouble paid Queen of the South fan,George Galloway.

Wee agent paedo is better sticking to his favoured subject paedophilia and Celtic

    Repeat mantra.

Who funds his workers party? Its not George himself,he does expense only charity.

    Poor wee propaganda victim

  15. St Tams – I’m amazed we don;t have that yet. A big feature in the EPL and would allow us to maximise season tickets, allow folk to get money back when they can’t attend and also maximise the atmosphere for those who can attend and would pay for a ticket of a ST holder.

Win:win all round and the tech is there….

Re the corner which shouldn’t have been yesterday.

Having watched it a few times I can understand why the corner was awarded. From the perspective of both linesman,( I refuse to refer to them as assistant referees), and the MIB it would have looked like Ralston managed to keep the ball in play with his foot just as the Livi player slid in for the block. The would have assumed, not unreasonably in my unbiased opinion, that the Livi player knocked the ball out of play.

What they wouldn’t and couldn’t have seen was the fact that it was Ralston’s arm which sent the ball out of play.

In some respects a good call by the officials. Anyway it goes part of the way towards making up for Maeda been incorrectly called off side when we should have had a corner in a recent game and as we are always told, these decisions even themselves out over the course of the season.

Good point Vinnie, very do-able in this high tech ticketing age.

Was in Barcelona with by two sons in 2018 and 2019. Weekend trips scheduled when Barca were at home, to a couple of the smaller La Liga teams. The Nou Camp is technically sold out for ever game, it being a members club. If a member doesn’t fancy the game, they let the club know and the seat gets put back on the website. Crazy prices, 80euro min. for a seat, but great business for Barca, selling the seat twice. The member gets some sort of a refund on each occasion. You can get tickets at the airport on arrival.

When the Spanish Grand Prix is scheduled for the same day as a Barca home game, the game gets put back a few hours to allow a zillion Dutch Max Verstappen fans to attend both events. Seat sales + merchandise = Messi’s salary. Not any more, Covid19 killed the Barca model, hence the team is currently very poor and the club carrying huge debts.

Lot’s of fans don’t have season tickets but want to attend and lot’s who do have season’s can’t make every game. Celtic should marry that up to ensure there is a bum on every seat.

  19. I noticed that Starfelt brought the ball forward a few times yesterday instead of the side pass to CCV. Not quite in the Ajer quality yet but encouraging. It does throw a spanner into the oppositions defence and should free up one of our midfielders

  20. Go tell the Spartim on

Wasnt it Starfelts header that their keeper did well to save only for Maeda to score. However much anyone tries you cant make players into the player you want them to be or would prefer. Think we’ll beat D Utd comfortably, if we turn up like we did yesterday itll be a long game for them

How can seats be re-sold when season ticket holders don’t turn up?

When do you decide a ST holder is not coming? Kick-off time? 5 minutes after kick-off? And how do you go about selling a seat once the game has started?

    A non-starter.

  22. TOM

The idea is for those that know in advance they cannot make it. Not for folks that get stuck in traffic. The onus would be on the holder to notify in advance and take part in said program.
