Celtic, big punchers with a glass chin

271

If you were an opposition manager planning to face Celtic, what would you do?  At Ibrox we will meet a team that attacks us, but on all other occasions, we will face a packed defence intent on shutting us out.  That’s not all.  Every opponent will play for free kicks in the final third and corners, when possible.

It is not difficult to gain possession – then a foul – in wide positions 30 yards from your opponent’s goal.  This would be the staging post I’d aim for when facing Celtic.  We are winning games but set-piece crosses into the box continue to be poorly defended.  We are the football equivalent of a boxer with a big punch and a glass chin.

If I was Dundee United manager Tam Courts, who face Celtic in the Scottish Cup a week today, I would play for penalties.  Failure from 12 yards has been a regular feature of Celtic performances for years.  It has not cost us a trophy since 2016, but until we improve this crucial part of the game we are asking for a sore one.

Practice, practice, practice.  You can be sure Dundee United will this week.

Reading back, I just realised you meant selling ST seats when ST inform the club in advance thatthey’re not going to game.

    Silly me.

The organiser of my supporters club holds all our season tickets and distributes them on match day. If I’m not going for any reason, I drop him a text and he sells it on to others on the bus.

    1. You offer season book holders who know they won’t be using the seat to notify the club so the club can sell on the seat. The season book holder gets a cut of the price, or a voucher or brownie points of some sort. That’s the carrot approach. I think Man Utd might do something like this.

    2. You monitor which books aren’t being used regularly and issue a yellow card. Use it or lose it. That’s the stick approach.

  6. Those penalty misses , I am sure recently i read 1 in 4 of all penalties are missed or saved.

    Not just us.

Last midweek Aberdeen pen , commentator

and lewis ferguson takes responsibility having taken 11 penalties for Aberdeen and scored them all, and up he steps, save craig gordon

  7. A 60,000 sell out isn’t any less a sell out just because you have 52,000 season ticket holders.

When Fergus McCann planned the completed stadium he factored in 52,000 ST’s, even some Celtic supporters at the time thought he was overly ambitious.

The upshot was that the plan worked a treat, and bedrocked the biggest club in Scotland for us and our Grandchildren to support.

60,000 to see Celtic verse Dundee the other week or Ross County next, was a neat trick that preserved one club alone, one history.

  8. The PLC would need to redraw their season book contract between supplier and buyer.

I am sure technically in the terms your not allowed to resell it or indeed pass it on.

even though we all do it.

dont batter me for this, and i know we are all different, but part of me feels it is our duty as a celt to pass on your ticket anytime you cant attend.

as long as he never feels the need to sing at a game à la Cliff Richard at Wimbledon then he can keep his season ticket!

  18. Is Paul Brennan any less a Celtic supporter because he highlights deficiencies in our squad? – no of course he isn’t, that is an absurd suggestion which is also levied at those among us who ‘dare’ to voice even the mildest of constructive criticism.

Is he being overly harsh on a squad that has figures this calendar year of: P14 W11 D1 L2(Bodo) GF30 GA11? A squad that has turned a six-point deficit into a three-point lead, enabling us to sit proudly at the top of the league?

No, is my answer! We are almost, not quite, into ‘sudden-death’ in the eight remaining league games. Win them all and of course we will be champions, and who knows, heading for yet another treble. But there are warnings signs which cannot be ignored.

The game yesterday once again highlighted our vulnerability to crosses into the box, in the same way the particular weakness was exploited by Aberdeen & Dundee. That we came through all those games ‘unscathed’ points-wise, is a credit to the resilience of the team as a whole, and we are all grateful. However there are big games coming up and if we lose the above-mentioned type of goals, there may be occasions when we will not be able claw them back.

So undoubtedly it has to be addressed. How we do it without real height in central defence is a conundrum? I leave that to the manager, but as Paul says it could be down to work on the training-ground….. Practice – Practice – Practice, with lots of penalty-taking thrown-in.

  22. BOURNESOUPRECIPE on 7TH MARCH 2022 4:53 PM

being a bit obsessive about crowds, since i was a wee bhoy, I always loved going to celtic park, and discovering new away games, and was always wondered, how comes at an average game you get 20,000. But for a big game thousands and thousands and thousands more would come out to support, used to do my head in,

and i would think these guys are just “big game supporters” and no fans like us in the shammy.

1979 – Stirling Albion League Cup 11,000, Partiza Tirana 51,000 on desmonds abacus (so probably 60,000 there).

I used to see the same busses at the games, the 3,4,5, irish busses early doors doon nuneaton street.

Ayr, Greenock, Govan, Sarsfield, Grampian Emerald,

One rational argument put up by a pal was simply, your lucky stivs your uncles all go to the games so youve got somebody to take you. Others the good bhoys in saint stivs were not even allowed to go, glasgow on a bus or train no chance.

Often a local phenomenon would be celtic playing at you local team, say Morton and thousands of local celtic fans would buy tickets or just turn up at the gates.

Fergus build it and they will come dream really felt like me as pie in the sky and he had it badly wrong.

Build a 60,000 seater , 2 huns games and some european, thats all it will be filled for.

    83/84 – average of 18.100, dearie me.

    93/94 – average of 22,600.

where oh where could those other supporters come from ?

the decant to hampden, an uplift in sales, 24,600,

Then we go back to celtic park, and in some sort of miracle, people want season books. The man with the plan is on track, right down to susidised travel, a shiny big stand, construction ongoing and we are up to 34,400, were did the other 10,000 come from ?

I parked up in my usual spot for the Newcastle opening game.

5 guys got out a car in front of me, they went to my school, I had never seen any of them at a celtic game ever, older than me, one a big bully but i couldnt help myself, “i didnt know you were newcastle supporters”,

follow me and i can show you were the ground is.

    A year later, 47,000.

    2 years after 59,300 average.

near 60,000 people attending games to see Kilmarnock, Dundee, Partick, scarcely believable.

Fergus did that, and the legacy nearly 30 later is whole new generations really have grown up going to celtic park, they dont even remember the old terraces, only this version of celtic.

Marvellous, imagine we were in a big league,

I like that arrangement and I know of at least one other supporters’ bus that does the same.

If overall a reliable ‘ticket availability market’ could be set-up on a game by game basis, with easy access and easy negotiation, I would not be adverse to the idea. I’m sure the technology within Celtic’s Ticket Office could be tweaked to accommodate…..but would the club want it?
